Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has declared  the state’s proactive stance on potential flooding, emphasising that the state is well-prepared to mitigate risks.

Alia stated this yesterday  while speaking to newsmen at the State House, Abuja, after meeting with President Bola Tinubu. He  expressed the state’s readiness for possible floods, a recurring issue in the region.

The governor sought to dispel concerns about the state’s readiness for possible floods by highlighting the administration’s focus on preventive measures rather than reactive planning.

He also clarified that rather than merely contemplating actions, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is fully equipped to handle any flood-related challenges.

Alia also mentioned ongoing discussions about dredging the river and exploring various options before seeking federal government’s support.

According to him, “I didn’t say we are thinking on what to do when the floods come we are not thinking, we are prepared, we are creating awareness to all our people, maybe why you mentioned of that is the fact that I had said the river requires dredging.

“So before the dredging there a number of things on the table, exploring to see which of the best options Before the federal government comes in to support us.

“So for the record we’re not just waiting we have A SEMA an emergency management team they have the capacity to take charge of all this and they are already quite armed, we pray that the flood doesn’t come in but if it does you know we are definitely equal to the task.”

The governor acknowledged the persistent issue of residents living in flood-prone areas along waterways and outlined a two-pronged approach of appealing to these individuals while also emphasizing the risks associated with their choices.

“When you find such people, what do you do? You appeal to them, and if it doesn’t work by appeal, when it happens to them, then risk,” Alia explained.

Commenting on the recent Supreme Court decision on local government autonomy, Alia also responded to allegations of candidates  imposition ahead of the October 5, 2024 local government elections in the state.

He defended the nomination process, describing it as transparent and inclusive. “What we did was to engage in a direct process,” Alia explained, stating that hardworking APC members were supported for nominations.

The governor emphasised the fairness of the process, acknowledging that while there might be some dissatisfaction, efforts were made to give everyone a voice.

“I wouldn’t try to toy with the reputation I built with my name and personality,” Alia asserted, reaffirming his commitment to transparency.

Looking ahead to the local government poll,  Alia expressed excitement and advised those who might not succeed at the election to remain optimistic about future opportunities.

Food Security: First Lady Launches Young Farmers Club https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/17/food-security-first-lady-launches-young-farmers-club/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/17/food-security-first-lady-launches-young-farmers-club/#comments Tue, 17 Sep 2024 17:31:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1013197

.Says agriculture remains backbone of the nation

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday launched the Young Farmers Club, Nigeria, an initiative of her pet project, Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
At the launch held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, the First Lady performed a symbolic presentation of membership cards, handbooks, and farming implements to pupils from various schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
She said with the Young Farmers Club, Nigeria aims to revive Nigeria’s indigenous occupation of farming, create employment opportunities, diversify the economy, and ensure food security.
Mrs. Tinubu noted that agriculture has always been the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and can be revived and scaled up with modern techniques and mechanization.
She cited examples of groundnut pyramids, cotton plantations, palm oil cultivation, cocoa, and rubber plantations that once thrived in different parts of the country.
According to her: “Today, the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Young Farmers Club Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, awakens in me a nostalgic feeling of hard work and productivity as a noble virtue.
“The song we just heard essentially means that our land is known for farming, anyone who does not work will steal, and that education without farming is incomplete.
“It encourages us to revive our indigenous occupation, which is farming. It is this spirit of hard work and productivity that we seek to rekindle today with the launch of the Young Farmers Club Nigeria.
“Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States of America and one of the founding fathers, once said ‘agriculture is the wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness’.
“Agriculture has always been the backbone of our nation. From time past, we have tilled the land with our hands and hearts to the present, where agriculture continues to be a crucial part of our daily lives and economy.
“It is clear that farming is not just an occupation, it is a way of life which can create employment opportunities for our teeming young population, help diversify the economy and put food on our tables.
“As I reminisce, I remember the groundnut pyramids and cotton plantations in the north, palm oil cultivation in the east, cocoa and rubber plantations in the west and the southern part of Nigeria. I believe all of these can be resuscitated and scaled up with modern techniques and mechanization”.
Mrs Tinubu said the club will start with 12 pilot schools in the FCT, comprising upper primary and junior secondary school students, adding that each member has been provided with a club uniform, watering cans, and hoes, courtesy of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
Her words: “The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has made financial provisions to scale up the club nationwide, and interested schools can register with their state’s first lady for necessary support.
“Federal Capital Territory to kick-start the club nationwide. We have chosen 12 schools today, comprising of pupils in upper primary schools and students in junior secondary schools.
“Each member is proudly kitted in their club uniform and has been provided with the watering cans and hoes as starter tools, with all expenses paid for by the Renewed Hope Initiative. This is to serve as a model to each interested state to follow and adopt in implementing this program.
“We will be providing each state with two samples of the uniform and the farming implements. Therefore, interested schools nationwide should register with the first ladies of their respective states.
“This registration will then be channeled to the Young Farmers Club’s desk office at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security offices in their various state for necessary provisions and support.
“The club activities are to be further supported by the respective states once they allotted resources are expended”.
She commended the efforts of those involved in bringing the vision to life, particularly the governing board of the Renewed Hope Initiative and the wife of the Vice President.
Earlier in his speech, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said the initiative includes training the young farmers in modern farming techniques and technology to combat climate change and promote sustainability.
Kyari, who conducted the induction ceremony for the young farmers who were drawn from various schools, highlighted the National Greenhouse Farming Initiative and other programs to equip youth with skills for precision farming.

* Targets $1.5bn GDP through strategic initiatives by 2027

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

The Federal Government will on Wednesday launch a comprehensive strategy to position the country as a leading player in the Halal economy.

The project is part of initiatives to diversify the economy and tap into the burgeoning global Halal market — products and services that meet Islamic standards of permissibility and embodies ethics, integrity, and universal values — that resonate across cultures and regions.

Speaking on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s Halal Stakeholders Engagement Programme billed to hold at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, the Special Assistant to the President on Export Expansion, (Office of the Vice-President), Aliyu Bunu Sheriff, said the initiative will bring together government agencies, private sector leaders and international partners with a view to capitalizing on Nigeria’s position as the eighth-largest domestic Halal economy globally.

According to him, “The Halal economy represents a tremendous opportunity for Nigeria to diversify our economy, generate foreign exchange and achieve sustainable growth.

“By increasing our Halal exports and focusing on strategic import substitution, we project an addition of nearly $1.5 billion to our GDP by 2027.”

He noted that the Halal economy extends beyond religious compliance, embodying principles of ethics, integrity and quality that resonate across cultures.

“The success of Sukuk bonds and the growing appeal of Islamic banking demonstrate that Halal principles are compatible with global economic standards and can benefit all Nigerians,” the presidential aide explained.

Sheriff added that strategic focus on the Halal economy opens up new avenues for Nigerian businesses to compete on the global stage.

“It’s not just about tapping into a market; it’s about elevating our standards and practices to world-class levels,” he pointed out.

President Bola Tinubu has received with relief the news of the strings of successful operations against security threats in the North-west by troops of the Nigerian Army.

Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji, on Thursday, neutralised a wanted bandit leader, Halilu Sububu, who had been unleashing terror on citizens in Zamfara, Sokoto and other parts of North-western Nigeria.

The troops also killed another terrorist, Sani Wala Burki, in a joint operation in Katsina, and  busted a terrorist enclave in Kaduna, where 13 kidnapped students were freed.

*Zulum seeks more assistance as state opens relief account

*Gombe governor donates N100m, Obaseki, southern senators, NSCIA sympathise with victims

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the federal government’s continued support to victims of flooding and insecurity across Nigeria, with a promise of additional relief for severely affected states.

Similarly, the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday, promised to assist the Borno State government to adapt to the impact of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri which affected many communities and left over 30 persons dead.

Also, the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, yesterday, announced the donation of N2 billion to assist those affected by the recent devastating flood in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Dangote explained that while the Presidential Committee on Flood and Disaster, which he chairs,  committed N1 billion, the Dangote Foundation would donate an additional N1 billion.

This was as Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, stressed the need for more support to overcome the flooding of Maiduguri and its environs, insisting that recovery from such a disaster cannot be the government’s responsibility alone and that it required the collective effort of all stakeholders.
Owing to this, Borno State government has established a dedicated relief fund that can provide urgent assistance to those affected by the incident.
The government aims to mobilise support from citizens, organisations, and international partners to alleviate the suffering of flood victims and facilitate their recovery.

The recent flooding has caused significant destruction, displacement of families and damage to vital infrastructure.
Faced with this humanitarian crisis, the Borno State Government called on all individuals and groups to contribute to the newly created flood relief account.

The account details are as follows: Name: BORNO ST. FLOOD DISASTER RELIEF
Bank: Zenith Bank
Account Number: 1313556361

According to Shettima, both the federal and state governments, alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), are actively working to enhance support for displaced communities.

Speaking yesterday, during an assessment visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Gwada, Shiroro local government area of Niger State, Shettima assured that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remained focused on effective governance and the welfare of all Nigerians beyond political considerations.

He said, “We are here at the instance of President Bola Tinubu to give the commitment of the federal government to supporting the people of Niger State towards addressing the food challenges caused by the flood and the insecurity that has been bedevilling this part of the country.

“We have come to reaffirm the President’s irrevocable commitment towards ameliorating the sufferings of our people. This is a symbolic gesture to assure the government and people of Niger State that the President is poised to assist all states of the federation towards addressing these challenges.”
The Vice President recalled that the federal government had already disbursed ₦3 billion to each state to address flooding issues.

He, however, emphasised that it was just the beginning of a more comprehensive support plan, saying “this is just a tip of the iceberg as far as some states like Borno, Niger, Sokoto, Bayelsa and Jigawa are concerned.”

He explained that states’ eligibility to receive additional federal government support will be evidence- driven and based on detailed assessment of needs.
“We will do our assessment and we will be very scientific in our approach. All states that deserve to be supported will be fully supported because governance is about the people,” Shettima said.

On the broader scope of the government’s infrastructure plans, the Vice President said, “In the contemporary history of Nigeria, no President has intervened decisively in the area of infrastructure greater than President Bola Tinubu.”
He cited ongoing projects such as the East-West Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Road as examples of the administration’s commitment to national development.

On the immediate concerns of the IDPs,  Shettima assured that returning them to their communities was a priority, just as he disclosed that the federal and state governments, in collaboration with NEMA, were working on additional interventions for the displaced persons.

“We are here and we will support our people. It’s not about politics; it’s about governance and improving the living conditions of our people,” he affirmed.
Earlier, the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago, informed the IDPs that the Vice President had come to offer condolences and deliver some intervention items.

However, WHO promised to assist the Borno State Government to adapt to the impact of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri which affected many communities and left over 30 persons dead.

Speaking during an assessment tour of the situation yesterday in Maiduguri, WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Walter Mulombo lamented the impact of the flood, adding that about 14 health facilities have been cut off by the flood while some laboratories were also affected.

Mulombo said the communities needed help and that WHO would help the state government to manage the unprecedented crisis.
He said, “The Sudden flooding has displaced many communities from their homes. We were shocked about what happened. We came to see first-hand and find out what the needs are to support the state and the federal government to address the sudden challenge. Climate change is real, we are seeing the devastation.”

Mulombo commended the state government for showing leadership and the state commissioner for Health for responding very fast to the situation, adding that from his observation, there was a coordinated response.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, who conducted Mulombo around the city, noted that the flood has never happened at this scale in Borno state.

Governor Zulum stressed the need for support to overcome the recent flooding of the state capital Maiduguri and environs, insisting that recovery from such a disaster cannot be the government’s responsibility alone and that it required the collective effort of all stakeholders.

Zulum appealed in a statewide broadcast on the flood disaster that struck Maiduguri and its environs, leaving over half of the ancient city of Maiduguri submerged in water.

Zulum said: “In the past few days, we have witnessed devastating floods in a way that many of us have never experienced before. Streets, homes, offices and businesses have been submerged, and unquantifiable property have been lost. Countless lives have now been turned upside down. The impact of this disaster has been profound, and is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that we face in our environment.

“As your Governor, I want to express my deepest empathy to everyone who has been affected in one way or another. I understand the pain, loss, and uncertainty that many of us are going through. We stand together in solidarity, and I assure you that your government is committed to doing everything possible to aid those in need.”

He added that: “The magnitude of the destruction from this devastating flood cannot yet be quantified until the water has receded and on-the-spot assessments have been conducted.

“We shall constitute a multi-stakeholder committee to undertake a sector-by-sector assessment of the losses to guide the recovery and rebuilding process.”

He added that: “Borno has always been known for its resilience and we need to strongly rely on this to rebound from this disaster. Our recovery process will require collective innovative thinking and commitment to rebuild lost infrastructure, and homes. Government is open to constructive ideas from everyone on how we can fortify our state against future disasters. We shall leverage on this calamity as an opportunity to invest in sustainable practices and infrastructure that can withstand the forces of nature.”

Dangote announced the donation yesterday, when he paid a sympathy visit to Zulum in Maiduguri over the recent flood disaster that affected the state.

Dangote said: “We have a Presidential Committee on Flood and Disaster which I chair. They have already committed about N1 billion, and the Aliko Dangote Foundation will also give another N1 billion. We will give this two billion as early as this coming week.”

He also solicited the support of other cooperating Nigerians to come to the assistance of Borno State Government to address the destruction caused by the flood of Maiduguri and its environs.

He added: “It’s mind-boggling; it is disastrous. I have never seen this kind of overwhelming disaster. I think it is going to be a herculean task in a couple of days and even weeks for this situation to go back to normal. Most of the houses would not survive because they had been submerged and the foundations had weakened.

“I am calling on all cooperating Nigerians to rise and support because the government cannot do it alone. We need to help make sure that people do not continue to suffer. Some of them have been in their houses for the last three days. It has touched my heart to see how people suffered.

“We would continue to mobilise other funds and resources to see what we can do to alleviate the suffering of our people.”

The Africa’s richest man was accompanied by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr Abdullahi Sule.

Also, Gombe State Government identified with the government and people of Borno State over the flooding.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who was represented by a delegation led by the deputy governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau,  presented a donation of N100 million as assistance to the victims of the incident, praying to God that such a devastating incident never reoccur in history of Borno State.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Director-General (Press Affairs), Ismaila Uba Misilli, yesterday.

Conveying the heartfelt sympathy of the governor and people of Gombe State at the Government House and the Shehu of Borno’s palace in Maiduguri, the deputy governor said the visit was informed by the bond existing between the two states.

Also, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, commiserated with Zulum, the people of Borno State and the families of victims of the severe flooding which ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, claiming at least 30 lives and destroying properties worth billions of naira.

The governor, who expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident, urged the authorities to beef up rescue efforts and expedite evacuation of residents in communities affected by the devastating floods.

Obaseki said, “We are deeply saddened by the news of the devastating floods which ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, claiming at least 30 lives and destroying properties worth billions of naira.

“Our hearts are with the Government and people of Borno State, especially the families who lost their loved ones in this very unfortunate incident.”

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, expressed deep sympathy and called for national support for victims of the recent flood disaster in Borno State, which has claimed several lives, left thousands of people and millions of properties displaced and destroyed.

In a statement signed by its Deputy Secretary-General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, the NSCIA, described the flood as a “devastating tragedy” that has caused immense suffering to the people of Borno State.

“This unfortunate development happening at a time when Nigerians generally are grappling to survive, owing to the effect of the current economic reforms by the federal government, is a tragedy too many.

“The Council hereby conveys its heartfelt sympathy to His Excellency, the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Umar ibn Garbai Elkanemi, and the good people of Borno State on this horrible and tragic incident.

“May Allah give you the fortitude to bear this monumental trial. The Council hereby commends the efforts and the empathy of the Federal and Borno State governments on the matter.

“We, however, wish to implore them to further deploy all their machinery, particularly the entire emergency management agencies and most importantly the Northeast Development Commission to ensure that this disaster is efficiently managed to reduce the sufferings of the thousands of the victims.”

In the same vein, Nigerian Southern Senators Forum urged relevant government agencies, especially the National Emergency Management Authority, to expedite actions on their efforts to resettle victims of the Borno State flood

The appeal was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday and signed by the SSF Chairman, Senator Tokunbo Abiru.

The southern senators extended their deepest sympathies to the government and people of Borno State over the recent devastating flood incidents.

They noted that the development had resulted in the loss of lives, displacement of communities, and destruction of properties.

Part of the statement read, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic impact of these floods on the lives of the residents of Maiduguri.

“We stand in solidarity with all those who have been affected by this natural disaster and commend the efforts of the Federal and Borno State governments, emergency response agencies, and humanitarian organisations who are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the victims of this disaster.

“As the Senators representing the Southern part of the country, we are committed to working with our brother colleagues across the country to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.

“We call on relevant agencies of government to intensify efforts towards mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and implementing effective flood control measures to safeguard lives and properties.

“In this challenging time, we urge all Nigerians to support the ongoing relief efforts in any way possible and to continue to pray for the speedy recovery of those affected.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), yesterday ordered its medical team to commence a sustained free medical outreach to assist residents of Maiduguri affected by the flood disaster as part of its efforts to provide relief for victims of the crisis.

A statement by Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, said the free medical outreach, which was launched on 11 September 2024 at a primary school near the NAF Base in Maiduguri, followed the directives of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, for NAF units in Maiduguri to offer medical assistance and essential relief materials to the affected population.

This was as the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), yesterday said, the ban on the illegal use of military stickers and displaying of any form of service insignia by unauthorised persons, especially on vehicles is still in force.

Ali said the NAF’s outreach is designed to address the urgent needs of the survivors, by providing essential medical care, food, water, and relief materials. The beneficiaries of the outreach, he said, are thus receiving free medical consultations, medications, and the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets. He added that families in need are receiving food and water supplies, stressing that among the notable cases, a woman who gave birth was receiving specialized care from the medical team.

A statement by Acting Director Defence Information, Brig Gen Tukur Gusau, said: “The DHQ, therefore advises those still contravening the ban to stop immediately as the military and Nigeria Police Force have been directed to arrest and prosecute defaulters.”

This decision, Gen Gusau said, was necessitated by the rampant cases of use of military stickers and insignias to evade security checks.

The military police has since commenced routine checks along Abuja-Keffi expressway to apprehend defaulters. The patrol team of military police occasionally stationed at AYA, in Asokoro to look out for deviant motorists.

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has expressed its deepest sympathy to all the people, governor and government of Borno state including the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima over the unfortunate flood disaster that ravaged Maiduguri and its environs.

ActionAid Nigeria decried that thousands of families in the country are presently living through unimaginable hardship along with homes destroyed and livelihood lost.

Speaking on the recent flood incidents in parts of the country, especially the devastating one in Maiduguri which left over half of the ancient city submerged in water, the Country Director of the NGO, Andrew Mamedu, yesterday in Abuja, said it was sad that the country was presently witnessing devastation.

Mamedu, who was represented by the Deputy Country Director at the media briefing, lamented that thousands of families in Nigeria are living through unimaginable hardship along with homes destroyed and livelihood lost.

Mamedu, while addressing the tragedy, commended the efforts of the federal and state governments for their swift response, even as he commiserates with all the affected people, and extended condolences to all affected families and various states.

The FG, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced funds for provision of material, rescue support and medical services.

He stated that the government has reflected seriousness in approaching the situation, but added that they must however act with urgency.

He said: “The immediate release of those funds for implementation is essential to ensure that timely interventions reach those most in need, we cannot afford delay while thousands remain without shelter, food, and the essentials for survival. Speed is critical but also, is ensuring that this process is conducted with integrity and accountability.”

Mamedu added that, as at 12th of December 2023, NEMA records show that the flood this year impacted 28 states.

It affected over 1,040,312 people in 172 local government areas, claiming 259 lives and displacing over 625,239 people and 94,491 houses destroyed. Also, 125,805 hectares of farmland was lost.

He said, this disaster cannot be overstated. It requires immediate, and unified action.

*Commiserates with VP over Maiduguri flood incident

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has disclosed that the Kaduna Smart City project will attract at least $150 million in foreign direct investment and create 100,000 direct jobs.
Sani stated this yesterday while speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, after a condolence visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima, over the recent flood disaster in  Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The governor who said the project has already generated interest from private investors noted that the project will also create indirect jobs for up to 500,000 people, in addition to direct jobs.
He also highlighted the state’s partnership with Google, which has trained 5,000 women in digital economy, and expressed optimism that they will benefit from the Smart City project.
His words: “A lot of other private investors are trying to key into the Smart City MoU. First, it will create about 100,000 jobs, that is direct jobs, indirect jobs could be up to 500,000.
“Before this thing, we signed an agreement with Google, where about 5,000 women have been trained, supported in digital economy between conventional government and Google, so most of them will key into this.
“Because of that, more people will be able to be employed and self employed also, and at the same time, in terms of the volume of the investment, we are thinking it will attract at least $150 million investment to Kaduna.
“Before that, we have attracted over $350 million from Chinese companies in the last seven months in Kaduna in the area of solid resources, in the area of infrastructural development as well agriculture.”
Sani further stated that his state, during the just concluded state visit by President Bola Tinubu to the People’s Republic of China, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Huawei Technologies Limited for the development of the Kaduna Smart City.
According to him, “The Kaduna Smart City project aims to enhance security, improve efficiency and transparency in public service, create smart healthcare and education systems, smart public transportation, and e-government.”

The governor expressed confidence in the implementation of the project, citing China’s technological advancements.

A committee, he said, has been set up between the Kaduna State Government and Huawei to implement the MoU within a specified timeline.

Speaking on why he paid a condolence visit to Vice President Shettima, Sani described the devastating flood crisis in Maiduguri, which has claimed over 100 lives, as a “tragedy” and an “unfortunate incident”, noting that a similar flood disaster occurred in Maiduguri 30 years ago, although not of the same magnitude.

He commended the efforts of the Borno State and federal governments in working to save lives and ensure the safe return of displaced persons.

The governor also shared his state’s experience with flood-related challenges, revealing that four bridges were affected, cutting off 60 communities in three local government areas.

He highlighted Kaduna State’s proactive measures to address the problems, including providing support and assistance to victims and educating the public on climate change and disaster prevention.

Sani stressed the need for vigilance and education to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and human-induced negligence.

*Total trade declined 3.76%

*Exports amounted to N19.42 trillion, imports N12.47 trillion

Deji Elumoye and James Emejo in Abuja

The country’s total external merchandise trade recorded a favourable trade balance of N6.5 trillion in the second quarter of the year (Q2 2024), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said yesterday.

The trade performance promptly drew accolades from President Bola Tinubu, who  attributed the feat to current reforms initiatives by his administration.
The president, in a release issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed confidence in the reforms his administration is pursuing and believed they will create a more robust economy that will usher in a new era of prosperity for Nigerians.

The statement pointed out that the economic indicators, which were low when Tinubu assumed office last year, are turning positive.

The government, according to the statement, will continue to consolidate on the gains of the reforms as more fiscal and tax policy reforms already embarked upon by the administration come to fruition.

Tinubu also reaffirmed his determination to confront the inhibitions that have stunted the growth and development necessary to unlock the country’s full potential.

The trade figures came days after the country recorded almost 100 per cent oversubscription of its first $500 million domestic bond and half-year revenue of N9.1 trillion.

The latest trade report underscored the increasing positive shifts in the economy over the last year, the statement added.

According to the Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics -Q2 2024, which was released by the statistical agency, total trade however, declined by 3.76 per cent N31.89 trillion when compared to the preceding quarter, and rose150.39 per cent compared Q2 2023.

Essentially, exports accounted for 60.89 per cent of total trade which amounted to N19.42 trillion, representing a marginal increase of 1.31 per cent compared to N19.17 trillion in Q1 2024, and a 201.76 per cent rise over N6.44 trillion in Q2 2023.

According to the NBS, crude oil dominated exports trade in the   quarter under review, accounting for N14.56 trillion or 74.98 per cent of total exports.
On the other hand, non- crude oil exports stood at N4.86 trillion or 25.02 per cent of total exports, of which non-oil products contributed N1.94 trillion or 10.01 per cent of total exports.

On the other hand, total imports decreased by 10.71 per cent N12.47 trillion in Q2 compared to N13.97 trillion in the preceding quarter, but rose 97.93 per cent compared to N630 trillion in Q2 2023. Total imports accounted for 39.11 per cent of total trade.

Essentially, the balance between exports and imports resulted into the trade surplus
In the quarter under review, Spain emerged as the largest export partner, receiving goods valued at N2.01 trillion or 10.34 per cent of Nigeria’s total exports.

The United States followed closely with N1.86 trillion (9.56 per cent), France N1.82 trillion (9.37 per cent), India (N1.65 trillion (8.50 per cent) and The Netherlands N1.38 trillion.

European and American countries dominated Nigeria’s top export destinations in the review period.
Conversely, China remained the country’s highest trading partner on the import side, followed by Belgium, India, United States of America, and The Netherlands.

·    Tinubu, Atiku, Adeleke, Oyinlola, Kalu, others mourn

Deji Elumoye, Chuks Okocha, Sunday Aborisade in Abuja and Yinka Kolawole in Osogbo

The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, a prominent Yoruba monarch, has joined his ancestors, after reigning for 42 years.

The first-class monarch, who once served as Chairman of Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers, was aged 87.

He was admitted at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State, till Wednesday, before he passed on.

Sources within the palace said the Oba passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness.

Although the palace had yet to issue any official statement as regards the passage of the monarch, sources close to THISDAY at the palace confirmed his death.

A source explained, “Baba Owa has passed, but we are waiting for official announcement from the palace. You can notice that they have started performing some traditional rites. This has to be done before any announcement can be made.”

When THISDAY visited the palace yesterday, there was considerable security presence in the area. Some traditional rites typically performed following the demise of a king were also being carried out.

The monarch, it was gathered, had been sick for some time, but his health degenerated during the week before he was hospitalised.

A palace source disclosed that no one knew the whereabouts of the monarch after his health deteriorated last week.

Oba Aromolaran ascended the throne on February 20, 1982, and his reign spanned 42 years.

Prominent Nigerians started sending their condolences to the palace, yesterday, and leading the pack was President Bola Tinubu, who expressed deep sadness over the Oba’s transition.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Oba Aromolaran kept his palace above the fray of partisan politics. He was open to all political tendencies.

On behalf of the federal government, Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Osun State, the people of Ijesaland, and the family of the late traditional ruler.

The president affirmed that the departed monarch firmly believed in the values of Yoruba culture and African tradition. His respect for these values and systems defined his remarkable 42-year-reign on the throne of his ancestors, the president stated.

Tinubu paid tribute to the departed monarch, expressing his deep admiration for Aromolaran’s unwavering support, optimism, and commitment to Nigeria’s unity and prosperity, “as his dedication to these noble causes inspired us all”.

He stated that the late Oba would be remembered for his useful educational contributions through his many books and publications, his advocacy for what was right and fair, and his protection of the vulnerable from exploitation.

Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed sorrow over Aromolaran’s passing, and recalled the late monarch’s fatherly warmth. Atiku described the late Oba as more than just a father-in-law, but also a symbol of courage, boldness, and discipline emblematic of the Ijesha people.

Atiku’s wife, Titi, is from Ilesa in Osun State.

Atiku, who took to X, shared the statement alongside a picture of him, the monarch, and Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.

He wrote, “With a heavy heart, I received the news of the passing of the Owa Obokun of Ijesha land, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.

“The late Owa was more than a father-in-law to me. Each time I visited him, he accorded me the homecoming welcome of a son. We all loved him dearly.”

Ademola Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, also expressed his condolences over the passing of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.

In a statement in Osogbo, Adeleke described the late monarch as a “father figure, a pillar of support, and a teacher,” who was deeply committed to the development of Ijesaland and Osun State.

He praised Oba Aromolaran for his boldness, candour, elegance, and literary energy, through which he inspired the people during his successful reign as Owa Obokun.

While expressing sadness at the demise of the Kabiyesi, Adeleke acknowledged the late Oba’s unwavering support for his administration, even in challenging times, and appreciated his constant communication on matters of development in Ijesaland and Osun State, at large.

The governor stated, “Kabiyesi was a deeply selfless father, who took no prisoners when it came to matters of development and wellbeing of the people. He was a friend of good governance, no matter the colour or race.

“The last time I was with him was the flag off of the dualisation of Brewery-Palace road. I am glad our late erudite scholar witnessed a new phase of development for Ijeshaland.”

Olagunsoye Oyinlola

Former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, described the death of Oba Aromolaran as a great loss.

Oyinlola, in a statement, commiserated with the people of Ijesaland, Osun State, and Nigeria, as he described the late Oba as a national treasure.

The statement read, “The death of a revered monarch anywhere impoverishes a culture and an heritage. This is exactly how I will describe the death of Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, whose transition was announced today. He was a national treasure, and his death, a loss of immense proportion.

“My relationship with the late Oba extended well beyond my years as governor of Osun State. We had a very wonderful father-son relationship that lasted over 30 years, which included my time as the Military Administrator of Lagos State.

“With Owa’s death, we are left to reflect on the lessons of his extraordinary life of service to his people, which lasted over four decades. He gave his people love and leadership and left legacies that will serve as benchmark to measure subsequent occupants of that stool.

“The late Oba was imbued with uncommon wisdom and adequate education and knowledge. He effectively used his years as the paramount ruler to build and nurture relationships with various peoples, communities and institutions in Ijesaland, in Osun State, and in Nigeria, as a whole.”

Orji Kalu

Chairman, Senate Committee on Privatisation, and former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, commiserated with the government and people of Osun State over the demise of the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran.

Kalu, the senator for Abia North Senatorial District, in a statement personally signed, described the passing of the prominent monarch as a huge loss to the nation.

Kalu applauded the “remarkable and successful reign” of the traditional ruler, and added that the late monarch was a highly detrabilised Nigerian, who used his position to advocate peace and unity among Nigerians.

Kalu, who is also the Bobameto of Ijeshaland, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the late traditional ruler to the social, economic, and political development of Nigeria.

He said in the statement, “The late traditional ruler was a selfless and patriotic statesman, who used his resources to advance the cause of his people. His reign brought tremendous development to Ijeshaland and Osun State in general.”

There were also condolences from the Asiwaju of Ijesha land, Olayinka Fasuyi, and Shola Oshunkeye.

Fasuyi, in In his farewell message, described the monarch as a “Quintessential imperial majesty,” and remarked, “An era comes to an abrupt end.”

Oshunkeye said Oba Aromolaran “desired more than the traditional stool. He aimed for the sky. He resolved to be king in a different kingdom – the academia. However, if providence ever permitted him to sit on the throne of his forefathers, he wanted to do so with a PhD in his bag”.

Oba Aromolaran II, a millionaire publisher was unanimously chosen in 1982 by all Ijesas at home and in the Diaspora to become the 40th Owa-Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, precisely, with effect from February 20, 1982.

That was after his predecessor, Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Peter Adeniran Olatunji Agunlejika II, who ruled from September 24, 1966, joined his ancestors on September 26, 1981.

He was coronated by the then governor of the old Oyo State, the late Chief Bola Ige, on Saturday, May 15, 1982.

The federal government, in consideration of Oba Aromolaran’s meritorious and selfless services to the nation, honoured him with the award of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR).

A Christian, who worshipped at Otapete Methodist Cathedral, Ilesa, Oba Aromolaran was the first Nigerian Oba to hold a PhD and his first book, Economics for West Africa, was published in 1966, in collaboration with his friends, Alabi Ogun and Areoye Oyebola.

Oba Aromolaran’s pen since ascending the throne “never lost its power and his proclivity for writing never waned”.

The last born of his mother, Oba Aromolaran was born on October 13, 1937 into the royal household of Kabiyesi, Alayeluwa, Oba Iluyomade Aromolaran I, the Owa-Obokun and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland (from July 1920 to July 31, 1942) and Princess Tinuola Aromolaran – a princess of Esa-Oke in Ijesaland.

He started his primary education at Otapete Methodist School, Ilesa, which he completed at the prestigious Agbeni Methodist School, Oke Ado, Ibadan. He attended Ilesa Grammar School, between 1970 and 1974.

Oba Aromolaran was a school teacher before proceeding to Wesley College, Elekuro Ibadan, a Teachers’ Training College. He later studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at Abeokuta Grammar School, Ogun State.

*Keyamo says move will usher in new era for airline business in Nigeria

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

The federal government yesterday signed the Cape Town Convention (CTC) Practice Directions in a move to reduce the cost of airline operations in the nation’s aviation sector.

The CTC Practice Direction was signed by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.

With the signing of the CTC Practice Direction, the Cape Town Convention becomes actively and fully operational in Nigeria, thereby reducing the cost of insurance for airlines.

It will also restore investors’ confidence in the nation’s aviation sector and enabling domestic airline operators to dry lease aircraft, among others.
Some local operators had in the past, breached the CTC which regulates aircraft leasing across the world, leading to the Aviation Working Group, co-chaired by Airbus and Boeing, saying Nigeria would be blacklisted until it implements a law that would guide against a repeat of such breach.

Speaking after the signing of the CTC Practice Direction, the Vice President said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is a pro-business government that is ready “to take all the necessary measures – as painful as some might be – to protect, promote, project and preserve the interest of the Nigerian nation,” as well as preserve and promote the nation’s airlines industry.

He said, “It is a great day for the Nigerian nation. We had fruitful engagements and we were able to cross-pollinate ideas across all sectors and have come up with robust solutions to the challenges facing the aviation industry.

“I want to seize this opportunity to commend my Lord, Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. Judges are, by nature, very conservative people. For him to frontally address the issue and sign the Cape Town Convention (CTC) Practice Directions, I think, is worthy of commendation.”

Shettima also commended the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, saying “All the issues agitating the minds of the airlines operators have been frontally addressed by the Minister, and on Monday they are meeting him to further consolidate all our gains.”
The Vice President assured airline operators in the country that  Tinubu will do everything to promote and preserve the Nigerian airline industry.

He said, “And, of course, my brother, Allen Onyema, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, and  Dr. Yunusa Sarina, the Chairman of Azman Airlines, I want to assure you that the present administration headed by His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, is a pro-business government, is a pro-Nigeria government, and will take all necessary measures to protect, promote, project and preserve the interest of the Nigerian nation.

“Air Peace has a fleet of 35 airlines and 26 more on order. Be rest assured that President Bola Tinubu is keenly interested in the promotion and preservation of the Nigerian airline industry. I spoke with him about three days ago, and he was very much interested in the outcome of our deliberations today, and I will report back to him.”

Also speaking, Finance Minister, Edun, promised to meet with airline operators and other stakeholders to perfect issues pertaining to agreements reached at the meeting with the Vice President.

He said, “My Lord, the CJ of the Federal High Court, called it action to revolutionise the airline industry. PEBEC is all about improving the business environment and reducing cost and what has been signed here is action that will substantially reduce cost in the airline industry.
“It will facilitate growth and development of that industry, and include further action that, I’m sure, would be taken in that direction once I meet with the airline industry and also have Customs present to discuss some charges which they want lowered, and which they believe by law should, in fact, have been implemented at lower levels.

“So, we’ll discuss that on Monday; that will be a further step in the direction of improving the business environment for airlines and, of course, it is all about a strategy that already has produced a growing economy, lower inflation, a relatively stable exchange rate and increased foreign reserves, positive balance of trade.”

Speaking on behalf of Airline Operators in Nigeria, the Chief Executive Officer of Air Pace Limited,  Onyema expressed appreciation to Tinubu for enhancing a positive change in the aviation sector.

He added that since assuming office, the president has introduced policies that will help improve the lives of Nigerians.

According to him, “Today is a historic day for Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has once again demonstrated that he is not only a listening President but has gone a long way to engender the ease of doing business in the aviation industry more than any other since the creation of this country called Nigeria.

“We the Airline Operators are so happy and we commend him for what he has done today. Today is a revolution. President Bola Tinubu has caused a positive revolution in the aviation industry by making sure that this practice direction concerning the Cape Town Convention and its application in Nigeria”.

On his part, Special Adviser to the President on Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, noted that the signing of the document will help reduce the cost of insurance as well as reduce the cost of doing business in the aviation sector.

She said, “Nigerians have been seeing a high cost of flight tickets lately; there are a number of factors including foreign exchange and others but there are some regulatory and bureaucratic challenges but because the President is really committed to addressing challenges one by one, this is one of the fruits of what he has done.

“I just want to thank the President for his attention to ease of doing business and making sure that Nigeria is a progressively easier place to start and grow a business.”

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, who was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Human Resources, Dr Anastasia Gbem, said the signing of the document on actualising the Cape Town Convention was in line with the, ministry’s goal of enhancing the capacity of local airlines’ business.

Keyamo added that the signing of the document will reassure the international community that it is safe to invest in Nigeria.

“Investors can bring their aircraft into Nigeria and if there is any problem, such aircraft would be recovered within the 10-day period that Nigeria and the Cape Town Convention have provided.

“So it is an unprecedented history made today and it is a venture that will boost the Nigerian airlines and the entire aviation industry,” said the minister.

Since taking over office, one of the key points of the minister’s five-point agenda has been the support for the growth and sustenance of local airline businesses whilst holding them to highest international standards.

“The minister would like to seize this moment to express profound appreciation to all the stakeholders who have contributed immensely towards the actualisation of this landmark issuance of the new Federal High Court Practice Directions.

“This will not only clear the image and reputation of Nigeria in the global community, but usher in a new era for the airline business in Nigeria to grow and be well positioned to compete favourably in the global aviation market,” a separate statement by the minister’s spokesman, Tunde Moshood, stated.

On his part, the Chief Executive Office of the National Insurance Commission of Nigeria (NICON), Mr Olusegun Omoseye, said the signing of the document was significant progress for Nigeria’s aviation sector and the economy in general.

*Oodua investment coy commits to FG’s economic revolution

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, has restated the resolve of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to revolutionise Nigeria’s Digital Economy, saying it is on course and fully backed by the necessary support, initiatives and partnerships.

To this end, he said the federal government would continue to open its doors to all willing partners and stakeholders, who continued to believe and invest in the Nigerian project, adding that it was just a matter of time before the nation took its rightful position across the globe.

Shettima, who gave the assurance yesterday when the management of Oodua Investment Company Limited led by its Chairman, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, paid him a courtesy visit at the State House, Abuja, praised the Company for its initiatives and investment in agriculture, digital economy and MSMEs.
The vice-president noted that these sectors remained critical to Nigeria’s economic development and future.

“The Southwest region of our country has the enormous capacity to revolutionise the country given its endowments, just as the policies of President Tinubu will, in no time, manifest as the greatest milestones crossed for the development of Nigeria,” he stated.

On the ”weaponisation of fuel subsidy,”  Shettima described it as an albatross that hung on the neck of the nation, as well as the hitherto manipulated exchange rate.

“Few persons sat on our commonwealth and manipulated our resources. But we are checkmating these manipulations and as can be seen, the economy is gradually beginning to recover and pick up.

“We are, indeed, ready to carry the burden of leadership and together with stakeholders like you, we are crossing the Rubicon and the time for reaping will come,” he further said.

Speaking earlier, Ashiru, who thanked the Vice President for the opportunity to pay him a courtesy call, commended President Tinubu for promoting ease of doing business in Nigeria.

Similarly, he praised the encouragement they got from the Vice President, saying, “You could see that businesses are coming in, and that is why we are here. I see a brighter future in this country with what we have seen in general.

“Nigerians have no business going around the world looking for money, especially with the volume of resources at its disposal, more so that our investors are our greatest assets,” he said.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Group Managing Director of Oodua Investment Company Limited, Abdurrahman Yinusa, said the company was seeking to collaborate with the federal government in the agriculture and information technology sectors of the nation.

* Hails NBS’ new report on trade balance

* Nation’s trade surplus hits N6.95trn in Q2 2024 which is 6.60% higher than Q1

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday welcomed the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) new report on the country’s trade balance.

According to the report, Nigeria recorded another trade surplus in the second quarter of 2024, hitting N6.95 trillion.

The current surplus is 6.60% higher than the N6.52 trillion surplus recorded in the first quarter.

The president, in a release issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed confidence in the reforms his administration is pursuing and believes they will create a more robust economy that will usher in a new era of prosperity for Nigerians.

Generally, the economic indicators, which were very low when President Tinubu assumed office last year, are turning positive.

The government, according to the statement, will continue to consolidate on the gains of the reforms as more fiscal and tax policy reforms already embarked upon by the administration come to fruition.

The president, the release stated, is determined to confront the inhibitions that have stunted the growth and development necessary to unlock the country’s full potential.

Just days after the country recorded almost 100 per cent oversubscription of its first $500 million domestic bond and half-year revenue of N9.1 trillion, the latest report underscores the increasing positive shifts in the economy over the last year.

The NBS report reflected the country’s strong export performance in the second quarter.

Although total merchandise trade in Q2 2024 stood at N31.89 trillion, a 3.76% decline compared to the preceding quarter (Q1 2024), it marked a 150.39% rise from the corresponding period in 2023.

The NBS reported that the Q2 surplus was essentially driven by exports to Europe, the United States and Asia.

Total exports stood at N19.42 trillion, accounting for 60.89% of the country’s total trade. This represents a 1.31% increase from N19.17 trillion in the first quarter and a 201.76% surge from N6.44 trillion recorded in Q2 2023.

The dominance of crude oil exports remains a key factor in this performance, contributing N14.56 trillion, or 74.98% of total exports.

Non-crude oil exports, valued at N4.86 trillion, comprised 25.02% of the total export value, with non-oil products contributing N1.94 trillion.

The strong export performance, particularly in crude oil, ensured Nigeria maintained a favourable trade balance.

In Q2 2024, European and American countries dominated Nigeria’s top export destinations.

Spain emerged as the largest export partner, receiving goods valued at N2.01 trillion, accounting for 10.34% of Nigeria’s total exports.

The United States followed closely with N1.86 trillion (9.56%), while France imported N1.82 trillion of Nigerian goods, representing 9.37% of total exports.

Nigeria’s other major export partners include India (N1.65 trillion or 8.50%) and the Netherlands (N1.38 trillion).

•Shettima reiterates resolve to partner states

•Zulum: Maiduguri flood is devastating

•Akpabio, Abbas, minority caucus, others commiserate with VP, state government, victims

Following the devastating effect of the recent flooding in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, the federal government has approved N3 billion for each state of the federation to tackle all forms of natural disasters.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who dropped hints about the development, stressed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to partner the states towards addressing the challenges of flood and other natural disasters in the country.

Shettima spoke yesterday in Abuja, when he received Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, who paid him a commiseration visit at State House following the devastating floods.

He said the financial support was to give the subnational governments a sense of belonging.

The vice president described the Borno flood disaster as a national calamity that befell not just the state but the entire country.

He stated, “It is a national calamity that has befallen us, and it is a concomitant effect of the incestuous relationship among climate change, ecology and the economy. From Bayelsa to Sokoto, there is hardly any part of this nation that has not been affected by these flooding incidences.”

Shettima assured the people that with the zeal and willingness demonstrated by Tinubu, the issue of flooding and other challenges in the states would soon be addressed.

According to him, “The president has shown his zeal, willingness and commitment to partner the states towards addressing these issues.

“Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state of the federation to address some of these challenges so that all parts of the federation should have buy-in and belonging.”

The vice president commended Abbas for his “stellar leadership in the National Assembly,” saying despite having nearly 70 per cent of the members as newly sworn-in, the speaker has been able to keep the flag flying.

He said, “There is a lot of stability in the House of Representatives, and we have to commend you for providing that leadership. We wish you well and, Insha Allah, you are one of the fulcrums of our democratic journey.

“A harmonious relationship among the executive, the legislature and the judiciary is very essential to sustain democracy in Nigeria.

“Once again, thank you most sincerely on behalf of the president, the government and people of Borno for your show of empathy and support.”

Abbas expressed his commiseration to the vice president, the president, the government and people of Borno State, assuring them that the National Assembly would provide support for the affected community.

He said, “We in the National Assembly are looking all through to see what kind of support we will give to the people affected. We are very sorry, Your Excellency, for what happened. We share your pains; we share your concerns; we are together in this from the beginning to the end.

“Insha Allah, it will come to pass, and people will go back to their normal lives and businesses as if it did not happen because we and you will make sure that we provide all the palliatives for them to regain their means of livelihood.

“Thank you, Your Excellency; please, convey our sincere concerns to the governor and to the people of Borno State.”

Zulum: Maiduguri Flood is Devastating

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, after visiting camps where victims of Monday’s flood in Maiduguri were camped, said the situation was devastating.

According to statement by the Press Unit of Borno State Government House, in all the places he visited, Zulum sympathised with the victims and assured them of proper care until the water receded and people returned to their houses.

He said: “I am disturbed by the calamity that befell us on Monday, resulting from the increased volume. We are doing everything possible to provide relief to our people.

“We will provide all the necessary relief support to you, and we will ensure you return to your houses as soon as the situation improves for the best.”

The statement said in the last couple of days, many states in the northeast have experienced flood disasters this year which have been attributed to the high volume of rainfall.

It added that areas in Chad and Cameroon Republics that are prone to flooding share border with communities in Borno State.

Akpabio, Minority Caucus Sympathise with Victims

As more prominent Nigerians continued to show solidarity with the government of Borno State and those affected by Saturday’s flood disaster, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and Minority Caucus of the Red Chamber, through their leader, Senator Abba Moro, yesterday, expressed sadness over the incident that occurred in Borno and parts of Bauchi State.

The floods led to the death of many people and destruction of properties.

Akpabio, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, condoled with the governments of both states.

He said in the statement, “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, properties, and livelihoods due to this unprecedented natural disaster. We pray for the souls of the departed and offer our support to those struggling to cope with the aftermath.

“We commend the efforts of the federal government, Borno and Bauchi state governments, the emergency actors, and humanitarian organisations working tirelessly to provide relief and assistance to the affected communities.”

Senate Minority Leader, Moro, on behalf of the Senate Minority Caucus, also sympathised with the governments and people of Bauchi, Borno and other states of the federation ravaged by floods.

Moro, in a statement, expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and properties, and identified with the governments of the affected states.

The senator called on the federal government and relevant government agencies to take urgent steps to evacuate those trapped and also ensure conducive environment for those displaced and in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

PANDEF Urges FG to Take Action

Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct relevant government agencies to take immediate and decisive steps to protect coastal states of the country.

PANDEF’s National Secretary, Dr. Alfred Mulade, in a statement, said the coastal states were already threatened by the flooding coming from Rivers Niger and Benue and the spate of sea water rise from the Atlantic Ocean.

Mulade said the predicted disaster posed an existential threat to the lives, properties, and livelihoods of millions of Nigerians living in the vulnerable areas, including Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Edo states.

The statement said, “We, therefore, appeal to Mr. President to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the double-ended flooding. The president should order the reinforcing and upgrading of flood defences and embankments.

“There is the need to carry out evacuation of people living in high-risk areas, rapid deployment of emergency relief materials and aid.

“We need a comprehensive support for affected communities, including rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts and urgent construction of shelters on higher grounds to provide safe temporary housing for displaced persons.”

CDS Mourns, Commiserates with Victims

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, also expressed sympathy and commiserated with the government and good people of Borno State over the devastating floods that ravaged several communities and paralysed economic activities in the state.

A statement by Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.Gen. Tukur Gusau, said the CDS was saddened to learn of the loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of thousands of citizens as a result of the flood from Alo Dam.

“On behalf of the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Chief of Defence Staff wishes to convey heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to the government and people of Borno State at this difficult time,” he said.

Musa also assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria would work closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant authorities to provide relief and support to the affected communities.

He directed the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, to offer all necessary assistance to victims, stating that the AFN stands in solidarity with the people of the state and will ensure all affected communities are evacuated to safety.

The CDS also pledged to support the ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

The statement said the CDS remained committed to the efforts of both the federal and Borno State governments to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the tragic event.

Marwa Commiserates with Zulum, Others

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) expressed his condolences to the government and people of Borno State over the flood disaster.

Marwa, a former military governor of the old Borno State, in his condolence message to Zulum, empathised with him, the Shehu of Borno, His Highness Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanem, victims and residents of the state over the natural disaster.

The NDLEA chairman stated, “I will like to assure Governor Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, the affectees and, indeed, the good people of Borno State that they are not alone at this difficult time.  “Our prayers and sympathies are with them as we continue to pray that the flood will recede quickly and the people will return to their daily life and activities.”

Marwa expressed respect for officials of the federal and state emergency agencies, non-governmental organisations, and well spirited individuals who were providing support, relief and rescue efforts on the ground in the affected communities.

IGP Directs CP, AIG to Support Victims

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, directed the Borno State Commissioner of Police and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 15, Maiduguri, to harness their resources to support the government and other relevant Ministries, departments and Agencies (MDAs) to restore stability to the affected areas within Borno State.

Egbetokun sympathised with the government and good people of the state over the loss of lives and property to the devastating flood that occurred in the state on Monday, September 9.

A statement by Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP prayed that the people find solace in these hard times.

Badaru, Matawalle Commiserate with Zulum, Victims

Ministers of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, and Dr. Bello Matawalle, extended their sympathies to Zulum and the people of the state over the floods that engulfed parts of Maiduguri, the state capital.

Badaru said the floods had caused significant damage to property and displaced many residents, adding to the challenges already faced by the state.

Abubakar said in a statement by the Ministry of Defence, “My heartfelt sympathy goes to the people and government of Borno State at this trying period that flood has wreaked havoc in the state caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

“I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate flooding in Maiduguri, which has displaced families and caused untold hardship to the people of this great city. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”

Badaru applauded Zulum for the quick response and decisive actions taken to alleviate the suffering of the affected residents.

The resilience of the Borno people in the face of adversity, he said, was remarkable, and “I have no doubt that under Governor Zulum’s leadership, Maiduguri will recover swiftly from this disaster.”

Matawalle said Nigeria’s plan to provide strategic sealift capacity to the African Union Commission was a demonstration of Nigeria’s military capabilities.

Matawalle added, “The move has further demonstrated Nigeria’s capabilities and capacity to contribute significantly to the movement of military equipment, heavy hardware, relief materials, and troops within the continent and beyond.”

Spare No Effort in Tackling All Humanitarian Crisis, APC Tells Borno, FG

The All Progressives Congress (APC) urged all agencies of Borno State and the federal governments to spare no effort in tackling all humanitarian challenges occasioned by the flooding.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, in a statement, commiserated with the government and people of Borno State, especially those who have been displaced or have lost their means of livelihood as a result of the flooding caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

APC said, “We are deeply saddened by the pain and suffering that this unprecedented flooding has brought upon our people in Maiduguri and its environs, with the destruction of homes, farmlands, businesses, public buildings, and even the palace of the Shehu of Borno.

“As directed by President Bola Tinubu, the Vice-President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has visited Maiduguri to undertake an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident and has further directed federal government emergency services to support the State government to immediately evacuate affected residents to safety, and provide all necessary assistance to them.

“We urge all agencies of Borno state and Federal governments to spare no effort in tackling all humanitarian challenges occasioned by this disaster.”

NEMA Deploys More Resources to Rescue Victims

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) deployed additional search and rescue personnel and facilities to strengthen the ongoing rescue of Maiduguri residents that were trapped in their homes by the devastating flood.

In addition to the search and rescue operation, the agency through a rapid assessment of the situation, warned against the likelihood of a water-borne epidemic that might result from flood contamination of household water.

As a result of this, the Agency has been providing safe clean water by using its water tanker, to the temporary shelter provided for the displaced residents.

From the onset of the flooding that started last weekend from the heavy rains in the city and the subsequent deluge from the overflowing of Alau dam, the agency, through its North-east zonal office, had been working together with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders in conducting search and rescue, as well as carrying out rapid assessment for appropriate assistance to the impacted persons.

•W’Bank proposes partnership on key human capital projects to boost health, governance

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured that the federal government would integrate technology into the nation’s educational infrastructure to address human capacity and resource challenges to improve learning outcomes.

He noted that with the evolving global technological landscape, the administration of President Bola Tinubu would harness all available opportunities to add value to the country.

Speaking yesterday, during a meeting with the World Bank Nigeria team at the State House, Abuja, Shettima assured that Tinubu was committed to driving change in the country.

He said: “Be rest assured that where there is a will, there is always a way. Change is a very painful percolation process. But I know we will get out of this very soon and be on the path of sustained growth.”

The Vice President referenced India’s success in using Kyan smart class solutions to teach students in rural areas, suggesting that similar innovations could revolutionise Nigeria’s education system.

“In India, Kyan technology is used to teach 50,000 pupils in rural and impoverished areas. I believe technology will help us upgrade our education system significantly,” he noted.

Shettima called for a holistic approach to education reform, including improving infrastructure, teacher training, and the implementation of technology.

According to him: “We need a comprehensive plan to address the gaps in our education system as quickly as possible. We must not allow these challenges to persist. The federal government is committed to making the necessary changes, but we need the cooperation of all stakeholders, including state governors, to drive this transformation forward.”

Earlier during their presentation titled, “Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity in Nigeria’s Human Capital,” the leader of the team and World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiamé Diop, outlined their focus on improving governance, health, and education across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The projects, HOPE – Governance, HOPE Primary Health Care and HOPE Basic Education, are part of a broader push to reform governance processes, primary healthcare and education, with an emphasis on human capital development.

“We are working to reinvigorate governance, primary healthcare, and education facilities across the country,” Diop said.

He added that all the HOPE series interdependent operations are result-based financing (programme for results), with results primarily at the sub-national levels.

One of the core components of the initiative, he explained, was the use of technology to enhance service delivery, both in healthcare and education.

“Digital health tools will be vital in managing patient records and ensuring follow-up care. We’re looking at leveraging the use of AI and other technologies to streamline service delivery in underserved areas.

“The challenge is not just infrastructure but ensuring that skilled workers are in place to provide quality services. We need to reinvigorate our healthcare system and equip our teachers to ensure a better future for our children,” Diop further said.

President Bola Tinubu yesterday, reiterated that though painful in the short term, the removal of fuel subsidy was designed to free up budgetary resources for critical investments in infrastructure and social services.

The President also disclosed that his administration has taken courageous steps to reform Nigeria’s macroeconomic environment, with a focus on restoring confidence in the nation’s economy.

This, he said, the federal government was rigorously working to actualise through measures targeted at reducing inflation, stabilising the foreign exchange market and improving fiscal management.

This was as the Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, Mr. Tony Elumelu, noted that while the Nigerian banking sector was a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, it remains confronted with challenges such as regulatory burdens and high compliance costs, which impede growth and innovation.

The President and Elumelu spoke at the 17th Annual Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) Banking and Finance Conference held in Abuja, Speaking while declaring the conference open, Tinubu, who was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, explained steps being taken to restore confidence in the nation’s economy, saying, “We have taken bold steps to reform the macroeconomic environment. Our focus is on restoring confidence in the Nigerian economy through measures aimed at reducing inflation, stabilising the foreign exchange market, and improving fiscal management.

“Though painful in the short term, the removal of fuel subsidies is designed to free up budgetary resources for critical investments in infrastructure and social services, frequent adjustment of the monetary policy rate, a move aimed at curbing inflation and fostering a more market-oriented exchange rate system.”

He described this year’s theme for the CIBN Conference, “Accelerating Economic Growth and Development: The State of Play and the Way Forward,” as both timely and imperative, noting that it came at a time the nation was grappling with interrelated challenges.

Listing the challenges to include high inflation, rising costs of living, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and effects of global economic shifts, the President observed however that the challenges also present opportunities for growth and development.

According to him: “This theme will enable us to evaluate where we stand as a nation, understand the root causes of our economic challenges, and explore actionable strategies to accelerate growth and development sustainably and inclusively.”

Tinubu also noted that his administration was committed to strengthening infrastructure development in the ongoing bid to grow Nigeria’s economy.

“We are committed to upgrading Nigeria’s infrastructure to support economic growth. We are investing in roads, railways, and energy projects through public-private partnerships to reduce transportation costs and improve market access,” he said.

The President further explained why the administration was prioritising the digital economy, which he said will drive innovation and enhance financial inclusion.

He added: “We are expanding broadband penetration and encouraging the growth of tech startups through initiatives such as the Digital Nigeria program. For example, we currently train three million Nigerian youths in digital technology and essential skills and then deploy them to innovation hubs.

“These efforts are designed to create jobs, increase productivity, and make financial services more accessible to Nigerians in all corners of the country. “It is essential to state that we are committed to achieving a 70 percent digital literacy level by 2027 through innovative approaches in delivering initiatives, continuous collaborations and stakeholder engagement.”

On the way forward, Tinubu called for collaboration across all sectors, including the government, private industry, and civil society organisations, saying, “to achieve sustained economic growth, we must intentionally align our policies and actions with the changing global landscape.

“The government is committed to implementing reforms to enhance macroeconomic stability, reduce inflation, and support infrastructure development”.

President Tinubu expressed hope that the conference will provide a platform for the sharing of ideas, exchange of knowledge, and exploration of innovative solutions to the challenges bedevilling the country.

“The conversations during this event will allow us to dissect the critical problems affecting our financial system and economy, identify growth opportunities, and collectively shape the future of banking and finance in Nigeria,” he added.

In his contribution, Elumelu, who is also the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, noted that to overcome challenges in the banking sector, collaboration between government agencies, regulatory bodies, and banking institutions was essential.

According to the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, by working together, they could strengthen the sector, ensuring it continues to drive economic growth within Nigeria and extend its influence across Africa and beyond.

Also, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Plc, Oliver Alawuba, who doubles as Chairman of the Body of Banks’ CEOs and Chairman of the 17th CIBN Annual Banking and Finance Consultative Committee, praised the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, for the significant progress in restoring investor confidence, promoting price stability, and implementing key reforms in the banking industry.

Delivering his keynote address, the UBA boss said: “Our banking sector is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy. The transformation of our banking sector over the last few decades is one of our success stories.

“The sector employs millions, provides crucial financial support to countless businesses, and generates income for millions of shareholders. However, the sector faces challenges that impede its growth and innovation, including regulatory and high compliance costs.

“To overcome these challenges, stakeholders—including government agencies, regulatory bodies, and banking institutions—must engage in constructive dialogue to foster a collaborative environment.

“By working together, we can build a more resilient banking sector that drives economic growth and supports the aspirations of Nigerians.

“The success of Nigerian banking sector is felt beyond Nigeria. Nigerian banks have become multinationals, leading the sector across Africa, establishing themselves in the world’s financial capitals – and in doing so they have changed how our country is perceived, created pathways to opportunity and set themselves up as role models for our other industries.”
