Following the recent signing ceremony to launch the Lagos State Health Information Platform (Lagos SHIP) platform, Interswitch Group and the Lagos State Government have organised a stakeholders’ engagement forum marking another milestone in the journey towards providing unrestricted healthcare access for Lagos State residents.

Lagos SHIP is a digital healthcare platform designed to boost healthcare services by leveraging Interswitch’s robust technology infrastructure. The platform aims to create a comprehensive health information system that bridges the gap between patients and healthcare providers, offering a seamless and efficient way to access a wide range of healthcare services. Lagos residents will be able to book appointments, pay for consultations, access medical records, and purchase medications with ease using the platform.

In his keynote address, Prof. Emmanuel Akinola Abayomi, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Lagos State Ministry of Health, emphasised the transformative potential of data-driven healthcare solutions, stating that the Lagos SHIP initiative will create enhanced experiences for all healthcare stakeholders and enable residents to access quality healthcare services.

Prof. Abayomi further stressed the importance of collaboration in healthcare, noting,”By embracing the Lagos SHIP, we can streamline healthcare operations, reduce administrative burdens, and make more informed decisions. These improvements translate into cost savings and better resource allocation, ultimately enhancing the quality of care and improving patient outcomes.

“We are living in a time of rapid transformation in healthcare, driven by advancements in technology and a shift towards more informed and involved patients. The Lagos SHIP initiative, a joint effort by the Lagos State Government and Interswitch Group, is designed to revolutionise healthcare services in the state by connecting patients to doctors, streamlining patient care through electronic medical records, and solving operational challenges.”

Dr. Wallace Ogufere, Managing Director of Interswitch e’Clat, stated that Interswitch, through its healthcare subsidiary Interswitch e’Clat, is working with the Lagos State Government to improve health outcomes in the state. As a development partner and supporter of the government’s developmental agenda, Dr. Ogufere envisages a future where the Lagos State health sector will serve as a model not only for other states in Nigeria but across the continent and beyond.

Through Lagos SHIP, we will support the Lagos State Government in unlocking the potential of electronic medical records, securely leveraging data from public and private hospitals and allied locations. This will facilitate improved experiences for stakeholders across the board, from healthcare administrators to medical professionals and patients.

“By leveraging advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, virtual care, wearables, data analytics, and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), Lagos SHIP will redefine the way healthcare is delivered, accessed, and experienced,” Dr. Ogufere added.

The Lagos SHIP Engagement Forum was organised to raise awareness for SHIP and its benefits, educate stakeholders on its functionalities, secure stakeholders buy-in and support for SHIP adoption, and address concerns related to data security and privacy in the Lagos health care ecosystem.

The launch of Lagos SHIP underscores Interswitch’s commitment to driving positive change and enhancing healthcare delivery across Lagos State and beyond. Both Interswitch and the Lagos State Government are confident that Lagos SHIP will serve as a catalyst for positive transformation within the healthcare sector, ultimately improving the well-being of millions of residents.

The last six months have been traumatic for the family of Mrs. Rita Uche Oji, a teacher and businesswoman, who has been diagnosed with renal failure.

She has been rendered invalid by the ailment and she can no longer do anything without aid. She has been crying and begging God to rescue her from the hands of this disease that has been ravaging her.

Her family has exhausted all their resources towards her treatment and Mrs. Oji is seeking financial assistance from well-meaning Nigerians so that her life will not be cut short and she can contribute her quota to make the world a better place.

The woman, who spoke faintly in excruciating pain, told our correspondent, “I want to live. I know that I still have more than three decades to live, if only people can help me to do the kidney transplant, which will cost me N35 million, and my family cannot afford it.

“My husband is a civil servant who cannot afford such money. My family cannot afford the money either. We have sold everything, including landed property, but all that we have been able to raise ended in dialysis.”

As it is, she needs over N35 million to go for a kidney transplant in India to regain her health.

She has, therefore, sent a save-our-soul asking Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Ned Nwoko, corporate organisations, Ubulu-Uku indigenes and all well-meaning Nigerians to come to her rescue.

Mrs. Oji, a native of Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha- South Local Government Area of Delta State, needs urgent assistance, financial support and prayers so that she will not die.

According to Mrs. Oji (nee Anene), who is now an outpatient of the Lagos State University Teaching. Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, she is undergoing haemodialysis thrice a week, and will continue until she is able to raise the sum of N35,000,000 (thirty million naira) for kidney transplant.

On her hospital bed, Mrs. Oji said, “I wish to inform the good people of Nigeria that I am facing death because of lack of finance. My husband and my family have expended all we have to sustain me. I have been down since May, praying to God that succour would come, but it seems that nothing is changing. Except Nigerians help me and do not let me die. I am still very young and I know that God can use you people to make me live again. My being alive today shows that God wants me to live.

“The cost of staying alive is now way beyond my family’s means. I, therefore, seek your help, dear brothers and sisters, to surmount this terrible illness. Please, don’t let me die.

“I have been battling this chronic kidney failure since  June 2023 and I have been placed on mandatory dialysis three times in the  hospital a week, which costs N490,000, while a month costs N1.960 million. I am  soliciting assistance from my Governor, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Nwoko, well-meaning Deltans and all Nigerians to come to my  rescue.

“This death will be avoided if only you people come to my aid. Please, you can support me with any amount through account number, Anene Rita Uche, Access Bank, 0700730340.

Contact phone number, 08035727154. May God bless you as you come to my aid.

A Lecturer in the Department of Guidance and Counseling at the University of Abuja, Professor Patricia Ojiah, has stressed the importance of self re-evaluation as a key step young people must cultivate to be able to cope with the challenges of growing up and achieving maximum results from the prospects that surround them in today’s world.

In the same vein, former Director-General, National Institute of Strategic Studies, Dr. Gwana Dogara, has equally charged youths to pay huge attention to Strategic Thinking in order to overcome life’s obstacles without too much stress.

Both Professor Ojiah and Dr. Dogara were guest speakers at the 15th Graduation and Prize Giving Ceremonies of Premiere Academy, Lugbe, Abuja ,which held recently at the School’s Premises.

In her Plenary Speech titled Challenges and Prospects of Life After School, Professor Ojiah submitted that it is important for young people to prepare ahead for Life’s Challenges and Prospects.

She listed the Challenges to cover diverse areas such as Academics, Vocational, Socio/Personal, Financial, Health Safety and Security, among other aspects of life.

She implored the students to cultivate strong resolve to always cope with the challenges by taking progressive steps in the right direction and seizing all available legally right opportunities without wasting time.

However, she added that the most valuable step of all “is to re-evaluate yourself intermittently” in order to be able to successfully “think outside the box, break boundaries and have no fear of failure”.

Speaking further, she said, “Challenges and Prospects will always be a part of life. Therefore, you can dream big but be committed enough to achieve it. The best and biggest commitment you can give is to intermittently re-evaluate yourself.“

Your attitude, humility, setting realistic goals, being responsible for your choices and keeping life simple as well as keeping positive networks and prioritizing your goals and objectives are important virtues you must cultivate in order to excel wherever you go and in whatever you do”.

In his goodwill message at the Occasion, Dr. Dogara, on his part, urged the graduands and youths generally to view Strategic Thinking and innovative approach to problem solving as vital skills required to go far in life.“

As young people in today’s very complex socio-economic environment, it is important for you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and follow your passion. Learn to take meaningful risks, get good mentors, develop effective communication and listening skills and be resolute in doing the right things in all situations”, he counselled.

The event, which had in attendance members of the School’s Board and Management, parents, well-wishers and key partners of the School, also featured the award of prizes to outstanding graduands in nine categories.

The Valedictorian Award for Overall Best Student as well as the Ruhe Global Resources Award for Best Graduating Male Student in Academics and Discipline were both won by Alex Ofem.

Akan Kosichukwu bagged the Barrister Joe Kyari Gadzama (SAN) Award for All-Round Best Graduating Male Student while the Sybil Iroche Award for All-Round Best Graduating Female Student went to Rogers Mitchelle.

She also clinched the Arabaa Award for Best Student in Community Service.Other Award Categories and Winners include, Best Graduating Female Student in STEM (Awe Caroline); Best Female and Male Students in Coding (Awe Caroline and Emmanuel Ogbondeminu); Best Female and Male Students in Music Instrumentals (Deborah Ohabuike and Emmanuel Ogbondeminu) and Best Female and Male Chess Players (Deborah Ohabuike and Onyewuchi Jachimike).

Education Minister Applauds Etiquette Africa for Promoting Civility, Advancing Development in Africa https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/05/14/education-minister-applauds-etiquette-africa-for-promoting-civility-advancing-development-in-africa/ Tue, 14 May 2024 00:56:03 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=977193

Precious Ugwuzor

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman has commended the conveners of the maiden edition of Etiquette Africa Conference and Exhibition for their dedication

Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education

towards promoting civility which he described as “an essential pillar upon which a prosperous society should be built.”

The Minister who was unavoidably absent (but represented) at the two-day event which held in Abuja recently said in his good will message to the organisers that the issue of incivility has remained critical but often gone unnoticed in discussions about Africa’s development. He was therefore hopeful that the conference would serve as a “catalyst for meaningful dialogue and actionable solutions with a view empowering individuals and communities to cultivate a culture of respect, understanding and cooperation.”

He described the theme of the Conference as being more apt at this time in our history when the country “is charting a new course of rebirth in civility through the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As Nigeria plays a significant role in Africa’s socio-economic development, a rebirth of civility in this country will positively impact the African continent,” he enthused.

According to the Minister “incivility refers to disrespectful or rude behaviour, often characterised by a lack of consideration for others, disregard for social norms, and failure

to maintain basic courtesy and decorum in interactions. It can manifest in various forms, such as verbal aggression, gender-based prejudice, disregard for regulations like disobedience to traffic codes, street hawking (especially on pedestrian bridges) and many other disruptive behaviours we see daily around us.”

He posited that incivility can occur in both personal, professional public or governance setting adding that incivility can impede Africa’s development in various ways.” These ways, he noted include the capacity to erode social cohesion thereby fostering division and discord among communities, hindering collaboration and collective action towards common goals.

“It can also undermine governance by causing citizens’ trust in institutions and leaders to diminish, leading to instabilty and hampering effective governance. It can limit economic progress by hindering

investments and business growth, as it creates an atmosphere of unpredictabilty and risk for both local and foreign investors.

“Incvility can also disrupt learning environments, affecting academic performance and the overall quality of education just as it has the capacity to diminish wel-being physical and mental health of its victims as a result of stress and anxiety it causes them.

This, he posited can utimately impact their productvity and general wellbeings. It can stifle creativity and innovation by creating an atmosphere of fear and inhibition, discouraging indviduals from expressing new ideas or taking risks.”

Prof. Mamman also declared that the efects of incivillty on Africa’s development are profound and far-reaching, stating that “It is imperative that we recognize the importance of

fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and collaboration if we are to overcome these challenges and unlock the continent’s full potential.”

The Education boss was however encouraging as according to him “amidst these challenges, there is hope. By fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and dialogue, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that impede Africa’s development. Investing in education, promoting transparency in governance, and empowering marginalized communities are essential steps towards building a more equitable and prosperous future for all,” he said.

He was however, not oblivious of the fact that overcoming the challenges may require, a multi-faceted approach which may include legal reforms, public education campaigns, through Non-Governmental and Civil Society Organisations, (which Etiquete Africa is taking the lead), educational institutions, and individuals.

Changing the Narrative of Plateau Express Service  https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/05/07/changing-the-narrative-of-plateau-express-service/ Tue, 07 May 2024 00:41:03 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=975260

Precious Ugwuzor

Plateau Express Service Limited, PESL established decades ago as a limited liability company to do profitable business, compete in the open market and generate revenue for Plateau State had been the butt of the joke for a very long time.

The company popularly called Plateau Riders rather than accrue the expected revenue had almost gone comatose, a home of rickety vehicles, rude staff, touts, and a very unkempt public structure.

The fortune of the company which was a cash cow in the late 80s dwindled so much that each day, it was a common sight seeing three to four of its vehicles, most of them being leased vehicles breaking down along the Jos-Abuja highway, exposing the drivers, passengers and their property to risk.

Citizens endured the chaotic situation as long as they could but switched their patronage immediately to viable options in organized transport businesses.

The dwindled customer base further worsened the lot of the PESL as the proceeds the drivers made in the few daily trips could not sustain them nor service the rickety vehicles.

To change the narrative and reposition the PESL to be innovative and entrepreneurial for improved revenue generation, the State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang with a year in office procured 22 buses comprising 20 new Toyota Sienna and two Coaster buses for the Jos-Abuja routes.

20 units of 14-seater Toyota Hiace buses refurbished and fully equipped with enhanced security features like; tracking devices with audio-enabled devices and launched into service.

Also, the PESL has opened up five revenue channels and registered them as subsidiaries to operate as a group of companies.

They are Plateau Riders Services Ltd, Tin City Metro Services Ltd (This is the transport palliative, a social intervention programme to alleviate the sufferings of commuters within the metropolis), Plateau Express Logistics Ltd, Plateau Express Learning Hub Ltd, and Plateau Express Automobile Ltd.

Commissioning the 20 new Toyota Sienna and two Coaster buses for the Jos-Abuja routes on Tuesday, Mutfwang, represented by his Deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo said he is committed to repositioning the transport subsector to give comfort at an affordable rate to citizens.

The Governor also launched a mobile booking app that would enable commuters to book online and interface with the staff of PESL.

He noted that the procurement and commissioning of the buses were to improve the connectivity of the two cities for ease of business and other legitimate activities.

According to him, “These modern buses are equipped with state-of-the-art tracking systems, ensuring passenger safety, and providing real-time monitoring of their locations would provide reliable and comfortable transportation options for commuters traveling between Jos and Abuja, contributing to increased mobility and economic activities in both cities.

“The introduction of a mobile booking app represents a leap forward in embracing digital technology to enhance customer experience and streamline the booking process.

“This Rebirth Project reflects our government’s recognition of the importance of modernizing and improving transportation infrastructure in Plateau State… I implore citizens to seize this opportunity and make good use of these buses which are designed to enhance passenger safety and security.”

Also, the General Manager of PESL, Samuel Gwott explained that the buses are in categories that would give citizens affordable options saying, “We have the Gida Gida Express Coaster Bus that goes for just N5,000. This 25-seater bus will leave Abuja and Jos at noon every day.

“The second option is the air-conditioned Toyota Sienna that operates between 6 am and 4 pm for N9,000. We have well-trained drivers, our vehicles have security features and speed limiters, improved customer experience, and a mobile app.

“We have well-trained drivers, our vehicles have security features and speed limiters, improved customer experience, and a mobile App. We have stickers placed in the four corners of our buses with contact numbers and email addresses. A passenger can alert us during the journey and we use the feedback to appraise our staff performance.

“No more will our travelers spend six, seven, or eight hours moving from Jos to Abuja.  No more to the breakdown of vehicles. We have changed the Jos-Abuja route from the Gidan Waya axis to the Akwanga route. We are no more in the leagues of the Sharan, Vectra, and old vehicles.”

Gwott stressed that the repositioning of PESL was a testament that the Caleb Mutfwang-led administration is committed to revamping the transport sector and improving the transport network in the State.

Ex-FSAS Students Lament Decline in Education Sector  https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/04/30/ex-fsas-students-lament-decline-in-education-sector/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=973347

Former students of  the Federal School of Arts and Science, FSAS, now King’s College,  in Victoria Island area of  Lagos, have expressed dissatisfaction over the decline in the country’s education sector.

The alumni, who therefore called for a reform n in the sector,  said the rise in bullying among secondary school students portrayed the lack of awareness among teachers.

They spoke at an evening of tribute held in honour of the school’s former Principal, late Timothy  Osolukoya, popularly known as Action man.

One of them,  Anne-Funmi Fatosin, said: “Bullying is a menace that must be addressed. We need to create awareness and encourage whistle-blowing to tackle this issue. The government must take responsibility and ensure that schools are safe for all students.”

Also speaking at the event, Mr  Charles Osolukoya, son of the deceased,   stressed the importance of parental involvement in education, saying,  “Parents must participate in their children’s education because  they  learn at home first. But if parents are ignorant, their children will be ignorant too. We need to encourage parents to take an active role in their children’s learning.”

He described his father as a dedicated teacher, mentor, and parent who always put others first. He said, “I miss his constant imparting of knowledge and his passion for education. He taught me everything I know today. He was my father, mother, teacher, and mentor”.

Another ex-student, Kolawole Bakare, emphasizes the need for passionate teachers who are dedicated to  students’ success.

Bakare said, “The lack of committed teachers is affecting the standard of education. Government must invest in the educational sector to improve the quality of teaching. Teachers should be rewarded and paid well to motivate them to do their best.

“Action Man was more than a Principal, he was a father figure who cared deeply about our well-being and education. He had a favorite saying, ‘Look for the philosophy for whatever you want to do in life, get the principle, add your passion and you will succeed in anything you are doing.’ He lived by this motto and inspired us to do the same.”

Charting New Frontiers for Disability Inclusion in Africa’s Corporate Sphere https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/04/18/charting-new-frontiers-for-disability-inclusion-in-africas-corporate-sphere/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 03:21:26 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=970126

In January 2019, Nigeria marked a significant milestone in its journey towards fostering inclusivity and safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities, PWDs, after former President, Muhammadu Buhari signed into law, the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act. Precious Ugwuzor writes that  inclusivity advocates like Access Holdings PLC are embracing this directive not just as a means to deepen community impact, but has through Access Bank undertaken several strategic initiatives to actively demonstrate and reinforce its dedication to disability inclusion

“Recognising and respecting differences in others and treating everyone like you want them to treat you, will help make our world a better place for everyone.”

– Kim Peek

As organisations continually explore strategies to attract and retain top-tier talent, one often-overlooked pool of highly motivated and qualified individuals, who bring a unique set of skills and problem-solving abilities are persons with disabilities.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion have evolved to encompass various dimensions beyond gender, and yet, the experiences of individuals with disabilities in the workplace remain fraught with challenges such as unconscious bias, limited accessibility, stereotypes and misconceptions, lack of inclusive policies, inadequate capacity building, limited Career advancement opportunities, stigma and disclosure concerns as well as underrepresentation.

These challenges lead to a pessimistic view of candidates with disabilities, which is evident in their struggles despite impressive backgrounds. The fear of negative judgment in daily interactions and performance reviews compounds these hurdles.

Furthermore, the pervasive lack of workplace accessibility, including digital features on job boards and websites, further hinders inclusion for those with vision or mobility issues. Underutilisation of available accessibility tools, such as ramps and assistive technologies, adds to the exclusion.

It is vital to dispel misconceptions surrounding disabilities, understanding that this category embraces a diverse range of health conditions. From hearing impairment and autoimmune fatigue to chronic illnesses demanding regular medical care, neurodivergence, and mental health conditions, disabilities are not confined to a narrow definition. Recognising this spectrum is essential in challenging common misunderstandings about the nature and extent of disabilities.

Inclusion Efforts

In January 2019, Nigeria marked a significant milestone in its journey towards fostering inclusivity and safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs). After nearly two decades of legislative efforts and public advocacy, former President, Muhammadu Buhari signed into law, the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act.

This landmark legislation not only criminalises discrimination, but also sets the stage for a transformative shift in how society perceives and accommodates the needs of an estimated 25 million PWDs in Nigeria.

The Act goes beyond punitive measures, mandating accessibility requirements for public transportation facilities and establishing a five-year transitional period for modifying public buildings and automobiles to ensure accessibility for the physically, visually, and hearing impaired.

Additionally, the legislation grants explicit rights and privileges to persons with disabilities, encompassing access to education, healthcare, priority for accommodation, and assistance during emergencies. Notably, public and private organisations are mandated to reserve at least five percent of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, fostering greater inclusivity in the workforce.

Also notable is that the Act empowers citizens with disabilities to seek legal redress by filing lawsuits for damages against entities that violate their rights, reinforcing a commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of every individual in the country.

While this development has jolted many into immediate action and operational remodelling, inclusivity advocates like Access Holdings PLC are embracing this directive as a means to deepen community impact. In its steadfast commitment to cultivate a workplace culture that champions diversity and inclusion, Access Bank has undertaken several strategic initiatives to actively demonstrate and reinforce its dedication to disability inclusion.

The financial institution has completed a thorough examination of the physical and digital facilities of all its subsidiaries – encompassing branches, technology infrastructure, and communication channels – to ascertain their level of accessibility to all stakeholders.

Following this assessment, the Group’s banking subsidiary, Access Bank, has elevated the accessibility features across its facilities. This strategic move has seen the bank increase the number of wheelchair ramps, accessible restrooms, and sensory-friendly workspaces.

These accommodations are aimed at creating an inclusive workplace for employees and customers alike, fostering an environment where stakeholders of all abilities not only feel accommodated but valued and empowered.

Going a step further, Access Bank actively conducts surveys, mobilises working groups, and other collaborative initiatives aimed at gathering first-hand perspectives from employees with disabilities. This inclusive approach extends beyond an acknowledgment of diverse needs; it involves managers in direct dialogue, providing crucial insights into existing accommodations and fostering a deeper understanding of the varied needs of employees with disabilities.

By actively seeking and valuing the input of individuals with diverse experiences, this approach ensures that the Bank remains informed about its current practices and identifies areas for improvement.

Development programmes, integral to Access Holdings’ organisational ethos, are pivotal in instilling a culture of inclusion. Specifically tailored for individuals in the recruitment process, frontline staff, and customer-facing roles, these aim at breaking communication barriers both externally and internally. The goal is to create an environment where customers and employees with diverse needs not only feel supported but also genuinely valued.

These programmes include sign language training for frontline staff, enabling them to communicate effectively with customers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Simultaneously, HR personnel undergo specialised training to enhance their proficiency in addressing the unique needs of employees with disabilities, fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Access Holdings’ banking subsidiary, in its role as the Chair of the Nigeria Business Disability Network (NBDN), has taken proactive measures to empower corporates and alleviate concerns within the business community. By leveraging its influence within the NBDN, Access Bank has actively engaged in educational campaigns and awareness programmes, showcased successful case studies, best practices, and tangible outcomes achieved by organisations that have embraced disability inclusion. These are aimed at demystifying the misconceptions surrounding the costs of accommodation.

Access Bank, in line with its commitment to Disability Inclusion, partnered Sight savers to host a two-day Employers’ Disability Confidence training. The training aimed to introduce private sector employees to Sight savers’ Disability Confidence Toolkit and equip them with the knowledge and tools to make their companies more accessible and inclusive.

The sessions also included an introduction to the International Labour Organisation self-assessment tool for enterprises, which supports companies in benchmarking their corporate social policies and practices against the guidance provided in the Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration).

As part of its Corporate Social Investment efforts, Access Holdings partnered the Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of the Blind (Gombe state chapter), to implement a food relief and medical outreach program for persons with disabilities in Kano and Gombe. The initiative assisted 1,535 direct beneficiaries in Kano in Gombe with focus on persons with visual impairments, particularly women.

The Broader View

Empowering people with disabilities is crucial for the economic development of any society, and Africa serves as a poignant case-in-point. The inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce not only aligns with principles of social justice and equality but also contributes significantly to the overall economic growth of the continent.

By providing equal opportunities and support, Africa can harness the untapped potential of a substantial portion of its population. People with disabilities bring diverse skills, talents, and perspectives to the table, fostering innovation and creativity in various sectors. Creating an inclusive work environment promotes productivity and ensures that the workforce reflects the true diversity of the nation.

Furthermore, empowering individuals with disabilities economically reduces dependency on social welfare programmes, ultimately alleviating the financial burden on the government. Creating accessible infrastructure, offering specialised training programmes, and implementing inclusive hiring practices not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also contribute to a more equitable society.

As these individuals actively participate in economic activities, they become contributors to tax revenue, thus bolstering the nation’s financial resources. Additionally, an inclusive workforce can enhance Africa’s global attractiveness by showcasing a commitment to diversity and social responsibility.

By embracing the abilities and potential of people with disabilities, Africa can build a stronger, more resilient economy that reflects the values of inclusivity and equal opportunity.

Even as various stakeholders continue to work towards bridging the gap for PWDs, we must continue to educate ourselves and take a broader view in our approach to inclusion. As the brilliant Lauren Ridloff succinctly opines, “It is important to showcase people with disabilities with intersectional identities because that allows viewers to see beyond disability. People with disabilities are multi-layered, complex breathing human beings defined by more than just what we lack.”

Quote

Empowering people with disabilities is crucial for the economic development of any society, and Africa serves as a poignant case-in-point. The inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce not only aligns with principles of social justice and equality but also contributes significantly to the overall economic growth of the continent

Unlocking Solar Potentials through off-Grid Hybrid Power Solutions  https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/04/03/unlocking-solar-potentials-through-off-grid-hybrid-power-solutions/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 03:41:09 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=966217

Precious Ugwuzor writes on how Daystar Power and RMI are offering new solar-grid hybrid power systems and solutions to commercial and industrial businesses in sub-Saharan Africa, thereby propelling them towards $6.5 billion investment boom

As a leading off-grid power service provider, Daystar Power has been offering hybrid power solutions to commercial and industrial businesses in sub-Saharan Africa through the Daystar Power’s solutions “Solar-as-a-Service” (100 per cent solar power) and “Power-as-a-Service” (hybrid power solutions with battery storage) which provide clean and reliable power while significantly reducing clients’ overall power costs.

The overarching objective is that the new Solar-Grid Hybrid Power System would  unlock 3.3GW solar potential, propelling nigerian businesses towards $6.5 billion investment boom.

Daystar, RMI Scale Utility-enabled Energy Resources

Daystar Power (“Daystar”, part of the Shell group) and RMI (founded as Rocky Mountain Institute), jointly released a U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA)-funded feasibility study titled, “Scaling Utility-Enabled Distributed Energy Resources for Nigerian Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Customers”.

The report introduces a groundbreaking business model designed for grid-connected hybrid solar power systems, with projections indicating the potential to unlock 3.3GW of solar capacity and attract $6.5 billion in investments.

This study targets 170,000 corporations and industrial manufacturers in Nigeria, offering them substantial cost savings by transitioning from diesel-fired generators to utility-enabled solar systems with backup battery storage.

The study highlights the significant advantages of this new model, not only for C&I customers but also for electricity distribution companies (DisCos). By embracing utility-enabled solar systems, businesses can reduce energy costs, while DisCos stand to benefit from increased revenues through enhanced grid consumption and the connection of new customers to the grid.

“This feasibility study has been in the works for a long time, and we’re elated to announce its results. While Nigeria’s solar industry is taking off, it’s still relatively in its early days, and innovative studies like this are key to deepening the market and adding more value to the business community.

” We can provide even more affordable and reliable power to Nigerian businesses if we team up with distribution companies in close partnerships to solve challenges and eliminate uncertainties in the power value chain,” said Victor Ezenwoko, Daystar Power, Country Head of Nigeria and Ghana.

Pilot group results: C&I customers save on average 26 per cent in energy costs, DisCos see up to 1,000 per cent increase in profitability.

In 2023, Daystar and RMI conducted Nigeria’s first-ever feasibility study to develop custom hybrid solar power systems that integrated with the national grid for 20 C&I customers in Abuja and Lagos, working in partnership with Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), and Ikeja Electric (IE).

The study found that 17 of the 20 customers saved on energy costs, with an average savings of 26 per cent, while the project portfolio totaled 27 MW in new solar capacity and offset an estimated 25,000 metric tons in CO2 emissions. Under the model, DisCos’ profitability surged up to 1,000 per cent.

Among the 20 customers, The Wood Factory, an Abuja-based furniture manufacturer, became the first to reach close with an agreement signed with Daystar and AEDC on January 19, 2024.

”RMI is very proud to have de-risked a pipeline of projects at 20+ C&I customer sites and facilitated the contract signing of the first project of its kind in Nigeria. The business model exemplifies that unlocking sustainable grids and scaling distributed energy systems can go hand in hand and create win-win-win scenarios for customers, developers, and DisCos.

” It’s time for radical clean energy implementation, and we hope the project will lead to scaling distributed energy resources (DERs) in Nigeria to help improve reliability and reduce reliance on expensive, polluting fuels,” said Suleiman Babamanu, RMI, Nigeria Program Director.

Unique Tripartite Agreement to Drive Collaboration between National Grid,  Solar Companies

The business model is based on a tripartite agreement between the customer, Daystar, and the DisCo. Daystar installs and operates a fully-financed hybrid solar system on behalf of Nigerian businesses to provide power supply during daytime peak hours (9 am to 3 pm).

Meanwhile, the DisCos will extend hours of grid power to supply electricity to customers in the evening, night, and early morning hours (3 pm to 9 am). Backup batteries and generators mitigate against any grid outages and outperform generator-only backup systems in cost savings and reliability.

Addressing Grid Infrastructure Challenges

A majority of C&I customers face poor reliability from the grid due to blackouts resulting from a collapse in transmission and distribution networks. Given poor grid services, many customers depend on diesel-fired generators as a primary and backup power source and pay energy costs that are three times more expensive than grid tariffs.

Over the last two years, diesel prices have surged in Nigeria, rising from 260 Naira per liter in 2021 to more than 800 Naira per liter in Lagos and 850 Naira per liter in Abuja at the time of the study in 2023.

Under the tripartite agreement, Daystar will finance upfront grid infrastructure upgrades by deducting DisCo payments (see diagram). With support to solve persistent infrastructure gaps, DisCos have the incentives to prioritize grid supply to C&I customers.

About Daystar Power

Daystar Power is a leading off-grid power service provider, offering hybrid power solutions to commercial and industrial businesses in sub-Saharan Africa. Daystar Power’s solutions “Solar-as-a-Service” (100 per cent solar power) and “Power-as-a-Service” (hybrid power solutions with battery storage) provide clean and reliable power while significantly reducing clients’ overall power costs.

Daystar Power’s clients pay a flat monthly fee or a variable tariff (per kilowatt hour) for premium power services, which include a power audit and assessment of energy needs, a bespoke proposal, installation, and full operation & maintenance.

Clients do not incur any capital expenditure and do not pay up-front costs. By outsourcing the management of their power systems, Daystar Power clients can focus more on running their core businesses.

Access Bank’s Commitment to Bridging Sustainable SME Gaps https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/03/21/access-banks-commitment-to-bridging-sustainable-sme-gaps/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 00:43:10 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=962471

Despite the crucial and transformative role small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play as the lifeblood of economies, they are faced with the challenge of limited access to financing and resources. Recognising these significant gaps and challenges, Access Bank has been at the forefront of implementing strategic projects to empower and support these businesses, Precious Ugwuzor reports

In an era defined by unprecedented environmental challenges, sustainability has taken centrestage in global discourse. From the looming threat of climate change to the depletion of natural resources, it has become clear that businesses worldwide must prioritise sustainability as a core aspect of their operations.

While large corporations have made strides in this direction, it is the often-overlooked small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that hold the key to transformative change.

On a global scale, SMEs are the lifeblood of economies. They represent most businesses in both developed and developing nations, contributing significantly to job creation and economic growth. Particularly relevant is the fact that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) represent about 90 percent of businesses and more than 50 percent of employment worldwide.

In Nigeria, SMEs are responsible for creating approximately two-thirds of the net new jobs and generate about half of the non-oil private Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Their sheer number and adaptability provide a unique opportunity to drive sustainability action. Moreover, their operations are typically rooted in local communities, making them well-positioned to address specific environmental and social issues on the ground.

SMEs are more agile and could adapt to changing market dynamics faster than large corporations. This inherent flexibility enables them to swiftly embrace sustainable practices and develop innovative solutions that are relevant to their local contexts.

Whether it is implementing energy-efficient processes, reducing waste, or adopting environmentally friendly sourcing, SMEs could lead the charge in the global sustainability movement.

Turning our attention to Africa, the significance of SMEs in the context of sustainability cannot be overemphasised.

Africa, with its rich natural resources and diverse ecosystems, faces a unique set of challenges and opportunities when it comes to sustainability. While its rich biodiversity and fertile landscapes promise opportunities for responsible resource management and eco-friendly development, they also expose the continent to the ravages of habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change.

The challenge lies in conserving the unique flora and fauna that reside within these ecosystems while simultaneously addressing the profound needs of its burgeoning population. Africa’s vulnerability to climate change and the resulting impact on agriculture, water resources, and food security necessitate robust adaptation and

mitigation strategies.

Furthermore, harnessing its vast potential for renewable energy sources, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and embracing green technologies can chart a path towards economic growth and environmental preservation.

This is why we must start to think about widescale behavioural change in our quest to implement lasting solutions to these issues, and in the process, pay closer attention to SMEs as an answer to grassroots penetration.

SMEs play a pivotal role in addressing Africa’s unique sustainability challenges by virtue of their local relevance, agility, resource efficiency, job creation, inclusivity, and innovative financing models. Their direct ties to communities and ecosystems enable tailored and contextually relevant sustainability initiatives, while their nimbleness makes them adept at adopting and promoting eco-friendly practices.

SMEs contribute not only to environmental preservation, but also to poverty alleviation, social equity, and the development of green jobs, making their impact more holistic and inclusive. Their active engagement in ecosystem stewardship and advocacy for sustainability further underscores their significance as key players in Africa’s sustainability journey, often surpassing the contributions of large corporations.

Despite the potentially crucial contributions of these enterprises to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), they also face a number of challenges that hinder their full potential. One primary challenge is limited access to financing and resources.

Many SMEs, particularly in developing regions, struggle to secure the necessary capital to invest in sustainable practices, research and development, or technology upgrades required to align with the SDGs.

Solutions to this challenge include enhancing access to microfinancing, fostering public-private partnerships, and creating incentives for banks and financial institutions to offer affordable loans to SMEs focusing on sustainable projects.

Another significant hurdle is the lack of awareness and capacity in many SMEs regarding the SDGs and sustainable business practices. Education and awareness campaigns are needed to inform SMEs about the SDGs and equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate sustainability into their operations.

This could involve government-led training programmes, collaboration with non-governmental organisations, and industry associations to build awareness and provide practical guidance on sustainable practices. Furthermore, regulatory and policy frameworks need to be streamlined and simplified to facilitate compliance with sustainability goals.

Governments can play a role in reducing bureaucratic red tape, offering tax incentives, and providing regulatory clarity to create a more conducive environment for SMEs to adopt sustainable practices. Overall, addressing these challenges through a multi-stakeholder approach, involving

governments, businesses, civil society, and international organisations, is essential to unlock the full potential of SMEs in advancing the SDGs.

Access Bank, recognising the significant gaps and challenges facing SMEs, has been at the forefront of implementing strategic projects to empower and support these businesses. Among its recent initiatives, the Smallholder Farmer Project, executed in partnership with the ACT Foundation, stands out. This project has been instrumental in equipping smallholder farmers and rural households in North-east Nigeria with the tools and resources they need to enhance their livelihoods and build resilience in the face of multiple challenges, including conflict, environmental issues, economic shocks, and social stressors.

The remarkable results of this project include reaching 24,162 direct beneficiaries, with a strong focus on gender inclusivity, empowering 16,913 females and 7,249 males from vulnerable rural farming households. By providing the necessary support, Access Bank has made substantial strides in improving the economic and social well-being of these communities, fostering stability and prosperity.

Another notable project undertaken by Access Bank is Somo Kijani, which aims at empowering youth entrepreneurs in low-income urban communities in Kenya. This initiative focuses on imparting valuable skills, providing essential resources, and offering business support to these young entrepreneurs. The Bank’s objective is to address not only economic challenges, but also environmental and social issues within their communities, primarily by establishing green businesses related to food production, waste management, and environmental enhancement.

Through this project, Access Bank has empowered 162 young green entrepreneurs, offering training and mentorship in entrepreneurship and innovation. This support not only fosters entrepreneurship but also ensures these businesses are environmentally sustainable.

As stakeholders across the continent continue to work collaboratively towards achieving the SDGs, SMEs can be the agents of change. However, to unlock their potential, policymakers, investors, and international organisations must provide support and incentives. This includes access to funding, training, and technology, as well as the creation of an enabling regulatory environment.

Collaborative efforts are essential to ensure that SMEs can thrive while pursuing sustainable practices.

In addition to laudable initiatives individuals, governments and social enterprises and corporates alike are executing, we must collectively realise the role of SMEs in advancing sustainability, both on a global scale and within the African context. We must also remember that embracing sustainability is not only a moral imperative, but also a strategic advantage, as it can lead to increased competitiveness and long-term viability.

The time has come for SMEs to take their place at the heart of sustainability action and contribute their quota towards shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.

Five students of the Premiere Academy, Abuja, have been inducted into the newly-created National Anti-corruption Club being promoted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) as part of the renewed efforts of the Commission to tackle corruption from the roots.

The 30-member club, which was launched recently at the Commission’s Headquarters office situated at Central Area, Abuja, also has 25 other student members drawn from various schools in the FCT and environs.

In his keynote address at the event, Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, described the anti-corruption war as a fight to salvage the soul of the nation which requires “the systemic involvement of youths at all conceivable levels” to vanquish the menace “that threatens the foundational health and future well-being of our great country”.

The ICPC Czar noted that the youths, especially students, represent an important demography and hugely powerful army with great role to play in the current administration’s uncompromising stance against the national malaise that has kept the country from realizing its potentials.

While stating the Commission’s plan to extend the planting of the Anti-Corruption Club in other regions of the country soon, Dr. Adamu Aliyu charged the inductees to serve as good ambassadors of the Commission by decrying all forms of corruption and anti-social behaviours in their surroundings.

He also urged them to be relentless promoters of the best national values and ethics, adding that, in doing so, they would be contributing greatly to the patriotic efforts to enhance the country’s unstoppable march to positive rebirth.

The climax of the event was the presentation of banners and IEC materials to the inductees by the Commission’s Ag. Director PE & E, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, fnipr, as well as the administration of membership oath by Bar. Umar Magaji Narimi, head of Legal Unit.

The event was attended by heads of various units in the Commission and sister agencies, with goodwill messages from the Directors of FCT Secondary Education Board and FCT Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Lagos Lawyer Petitions IG over Alleged Illegal Sale of Client’s N20bn Assets https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/02/20/lagos-lawyer-petitions-ig-over-alleged-illegal-sale-of-clients-n20bn-assets/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 01:32:56 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=953743

Precious Ugwuzor

A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Chief Aloysius E. Ezenduka, has called on the Inspector General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun to cause investigation into the alleged sale of his client’s company assets worth N20 billion by Mr. Emmanuel Adeyeye Oyebanji, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, who was appointed as Receiver/Manager by CSL Trustees Limited on behalf of First City Monument Bank, FCMB, following a N350 million loan dispute.

In a petition dated January 7, 2024, Ezenduka told the Police boss to intervene and investigate “a case of criminal conversion, stealing, selling of the asset worth over N20 billion” belonging to his clients – Chief Anthony Obidulu and his company, Algrain Foods Limited – located at Number 15 – 17, Canal Avenue, Canal Estate, Okota, Lagos.

“Chief Obidulu is the Managing Director of Algrain Foods Limited, a manufacturer of Pasta and Noodles.”

The Petitioner said the actions of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN and FCMB were reprehensible as four court cases – two at the Appeal Court in Lagos (CA/L/CV/1021/2021 and CA/L/CV/1024/2021) and two at the High Court of Lagos State – are pending and trial ongoing.

The two cases at the High Court of Lagos State were instituted by Chief Obidulu against Emmanuel Adeyeye Oyebanji, SAN, and First City Monument Bank Plc. and Emmanuel Adeyeye Oyebanji & First Bank Limited for trespass over his property.

He noted that despite these cases pending in Court and undecided, Barrister Emmanuel Adeyeye Oyebanji in connivance with the Managing Director, First City Monument Bank Plc. has been discretely selling all the asset comprising vehicles, heavy machineries and goods kept in the warehouse worth billions of naira over a purported judgment on appeal that claimed that FCMB was owed the paltry sum of N350,000,000.00k (Three hundred and fifty million naira) which audit report has shown that the company is not indebted to the bank or anyone.”

According to the petitioner, the Court of Appeal on 10 October, 2023 allowed the petitioner to bring in document that showed that the purported loan in respect of which Adeyeye and FCMB procured Court order is indeed a Federal Government Small and Medium Enterprises Credit Guarantee Scheme (SMECGS) which is guaranteed 80 per cent by the Central Bank of Nigeria which FCMB has never redeemed before procuring court order with fraudulent documents.

Worried by the actions of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria and FCMB, Ezenduka appealed to the Inspector General of Police to, among other things:  “Investigate these acts of forgery, alteration, procurement and concealment of documents for the purpose of obtaining an order of court illegally; conversion, stealing, selling of goods belonging to Chief Obidulu and Algrain Foods Limited by Emmanuel Adeyeye, Oyebanji, SAN, and FCMB.  Investigate the refusal of Oyebanji, SAN, to render account of the purported receivership to the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Board of Directors of Algrain Foods Limited as Required by Law.  Investigate the purported sales, conversion and diversion of proceeds of the purported sales of the assets by Emmanuel Adeyeye Oyebanji and the Managing Director of FCMB Plc;

“Recover all the assets stolen and or purportedly sold by Oyebanji and FCMB Plc. into safe custody pending when the rights of the parties are determined by the courts;

“Prosecute the duo if upon completion of the investigation a prima face case is established against them and Investigate the Mobile Policemen Oyebanji and FCMB procured and aided them in the evacuation of properties at odd hours of 1:00AM to 3:00AM since December last year when the Court of Appeal gave a favourable ruling in favour of Chief Obidulu and his company in Appeal No. CA/L/CV/1021/2021.”

InterswitchSPAK’s Commitment to Empowering the African Youth https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/02/07/interswitchspaks-commitment-to-empowering-the-african-youth/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 00:41:28 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=949888

Recognising the importance of nurturing forward-thinking and proactive young minds as well as promoting sustainable development in Africa, Interswitch, a leading African digital payments and commerce company, has taken significant strides towards supporting STEM education in Africa through InterswitchSPAK, its flagship CSR initiative, Precious Ugwuzor reports

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the critical role that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education plays in shaping the future of nations across the globe. Africa in particular, with its rich potential and youthful population, stands to benefit significantly from a robust emphasis on STEM education.

STEM education equips individuals with the necessary skills to address pressing challenges facing the continent. As Africa continues to strive for sustainable development, the expertise gained through STEM disciplines enables young minds to devise innovative solutions for issues such as healthcare and agriculture, among others.

STEM education also serves as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation. By nurturing a workforce with proficiency in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, African nations can attract and support the proliferation of industries that drive technological advancement.

This consequently cultivates an environment favorable to entrepreneurship and innovation, reducing dependence on conventional sectors and creating a knowledge-based economy.

Recognising the importance of nurturing forward-thinking and proactive young minds as well as promoting sustainable development in Africa, Interswitch, a leading African digital payments and commerce company, has taken significant strides towards supporting STEM education in Africa through InterswitchSPAK, its flagship CSR initiative.

InterswitchSPAK was birthed in 2018 to recognise and reward the outstanding efforts of brilliant young minds striving for excellence in STEM subjects, by creating a platform that encourages healthy competition.

How Government Can Keep the Youth Busy with Skill Acquisition https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/02/01/how-government-can-keep-the-youth-busy-with-skill-acquisition/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 23:33:48 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=948302

A renowned software developer and cyber-security specialist, Mr. Chidiebere Divinewill Ihediwa has blamed the increasing crime rate on too many idle hands in the country.

The Managing Consultant, Spring Infotech Lab Limited, Mr. Ihediwa, who was of the opinion that since an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, if our youths are busy with tangible things to do, they won’t tools in the hands of unscrupulous elements to use in perpetrating one crime or the other.

Ihediwa, who spoke in Lagos after receiving an award from a security online platform, Cornerstonenewsng com, a subsidiary of Phil Chris Media Concepts, also called for what may be described as knowledge swap among Nigeria’s  thousands of educated cyber fraudsters,  otherwise known as Yahoo Yahoo boys.

The information technology guru was  recently honoured at the Police Officers Mess, GRA Ikeja.  He was honoured with a Star Award in Cyber-Security Development and Data Analysis in Nigeria.

According to Ihediwa, knowledge can be categorised into two- positive and negative, adding that even if there are many educated young men among the cyber fraudsters, their inherent knowledge is at variance with the ideal positive knowledge needed for societal development.

He therefore, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to devise a method of re-orientating the educated Yahoo Yahoo boys arrested by the agency towards becoming information technology specialists, rather than allow them rot away.

Ihediwa, also advised the federal government to engage the teaming youths skill acquisition as it is one of the solutions to curb crime in the society.

“Instead of being idle, the youths, especially the non educated ones should be engaged in skill acquisition after which the government and other well meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations should assist them with money to set up businesses. After setting them up , they will be too busy to engage in crimes,” he opined.

The Cyber-security specialist thanked management of Cornerstone.ng for bringing him to the lime light through the award.

Mr. Ihediwa who was accompanied to the award ceremony by his wife also paid tribute to his parents who gave him early opportunity to acquire education up to the university level where he subsequently studied computer science.

Balikis’s arm has been  amputated due to sickle cell anemia. This reported development caught the attention of Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who then drew the attention of Mrs. Abiodun to the plight of the young lady.

Her team swung into action and located the family house of Balikis in Irolu town, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Mrs. Abiodun donated food and other items to Balikis and her family pledging to give the needed support in rehabilitating and  integrating her into the society.

Mrs. Abiodun promised to also support her clothing business by giving her cash grant while offering to train and educate her on her chosen trade.

The wife of the Governor said she was so touched by the story that she had to head to Irolu to see Ms. Salami at the earliest opportunity.

“Two days ago, our first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu drew my attention to the story of Bilikis in the Punch Newspapers. She also asked that I immediately intervene in the young lady’s situation.

” On reading the story, I was deeply moved by her plight, because not only has she had to deal with the sickle cell disease, she now has to face the social stigma from society because the amputation of her arm,” she surmised.

Empower Citizens to Pursue Grand Corruption, Asset Recovery against Govt https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/01/18/empower-citizens-to-pursue-grand-corruption-asset-recovery-against-govt/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 03:06:18 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=944293

Precious Ugwuzor

Legal Adviser at Amnesty International’s International Secretariat, London, Dr Kolawole Olaniyan, has called for citizens to be empowered to pursue grand corruption and asset recovery actions against their governments.

He called for the development of domestic laws on stolen wealth recovery.

Olaniyan also urged the international community to look to international human rights law to implement the growing consensus that corruption undermines the rule of law, hampers development efforts, stifles democracy, and harms the most vulnerable throughout the world.

These were some of the recommendations he made in his new book: “Ownership of Proceeds of Corruption in International Law.”

The author noted that recovery of proceeds deriving from corruption is now increasingly recognised as a principle of contemporary international law.

He, however, said people’s sovereign and ownership rights over their wealth and natural resources have remained more theoretical than real, especially in the global fight against corruption.

As a result, the populations of victim-states often cannot hold their governments accountable for misusing proceeds of corruption, and do not benefit from the recovery, repatriation, management, and use of returned proceeds.

Olaniyan, therefore embarked on the first comprehensive study on the issue.

In the book, he challenged the conventional notion that sovereign and ownership rights over wealth and natural resources – and by extension, the proceeds of corruption – should be exclusively exercised by states.

The author, who was previously director of the Africa Programme, has been a researcher and visiting lecturer at universities in the United States and United Kingdom.

He holds a doctorate in international law on corruption and economic crimes from the Law School of the University of Notre Dame.

Olaniyan is the author of a seminal book on Corruption and Human Rights Law in Africa. He has authored many other book chapters and articles on international law on corruption, economic crimes, and human rights law. He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) said the new book addresses lingering legal and practical challenges and discusses the complex interplay between the legal rules on corruption, asset recovery and human rights law.

Stressing the extent of the problem, he said: “Corrupt officials routinely use states’ institutions and coercive powers to steal people’s wealth with almost absolute impunity.

“Even though the value of the assets returned has varied over time, the total amount recovered since 2010 is reported to be just over $4 billion– a tiny fraction of the estimated staggering $3.6 trillion lost to international corruption every year.”

Falana noted that when the very institutions and officials charged with preventing and combating corruption and pursuing asset recovery cases are themselves corrupt, the victims are left with no recourse, and the resulting sense of powerlessness and betrayal often compounds the injury and makes redress more difficult.

“Through the analyses of theories, concepts, jurisprudence and case studies, the book makes a compelling case for people’s ownership rights of proceeds of corruption.

“It discusses contemporary doctrinal issues as well as the legal and practical challenges confronting asset recovery.

“By offering both a theoretical framework and an analysis of case studies in these fields, Kolawole seeks to advance the coherency, consistency and effective implementation and enforcement of both anti-corruption and human rights standards.

“Kolawole’s extensive treatment of the rarely addressed private sector corruption is particularly welcome. The focus on private sector corruption is quite important especially given the well-documented complicity of private actors such as banks and financial institutions in public sector corruption.

“Thorough and scholarly, yet eminently readable, the book addresses important and topical issues such as the sharing of proceeds of foreign bribery, universal jurisdiction, and international cooperation and assistance in asset recovery cases, including the proposed International Anti-corruption Court.

“The book also discusses how the current legal rules and mechanisms on corruption and asset recovery still have very little to offer to victims. Kolawole’s focus throughout is on the rights of individuals and people to seek redress when states are either unwilling or unable to pursue asset recovery cases.”

In the preface, Dinah L. Shelton, Professor of International Law Emeritus at George Washington University Law School, says Olaniyan “combined theoretical and practical aspects of the struggle to recover the proceeds of corruption to create a masterful and comprehensive treatise”.

He adds: “Along the way, he presents case studies and jurisprudence that support his main thesis that criminal law and efforts to enforce it have been inefficient and largely unsuccessful in preventing or remedying corruption. He addresses the focus on public sector corruption and explains why limiting concern to this topic is misguided, because private sector corruption is just as problematic.

“This will be a valuable resource for government officials, lawyers, practitioners, scholars, and students alike.”

The book has also received positive global reviews from legal experts and other stakeholders.

Charity Hanene Nchimunya, Executive Secretary of the African Union Advisory Board against Corruption, Arusha, Tanzania, says: “Dr Olaniyan, a seasoned legal guru and anticorruption and human rights lawyer, has meticulously explored the important issues of ownership of proceeds of corruption and highlighted the inadequacies in the current legal rules and implementation mechanisms on asset recovery.

“Dr Olaniyan has further suggested ways in which these lacunae could be remedied, and the rules and mechanisms synchronised and strengthened to facilitate the recovery and repatriation of the proceeds of corruption to the rightful victims.

“Dr Olaniyan’s book makes a compelling case for why the global efforts to prevent and combat corruption and advance human rights must be reinvigorated, refreshed and revised to meet contemporary challenges.

“The book could not have arrived at a better time. This unique and important book is a great resource which should be embraced by all stakeholders; its scope is remarkable, and the suggested remedies could change the narrative in asset recovery.”

A Judge at the ECOWAS Court of Justice and former Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Dupe Atoki, said the book presents a seamless read on the important nexus between corruption and human rights law.

“This illuminating and timely book therefore is a natural follow up. The global fight against corruption can only be effective when upon eventual recovery of its proceeds, the owners (the people) become real beneficiaries.

“In its absence, the fight will continue to be a rhetorical sing-song, rather deafening with no soothing sound to the victims.

“While identifying the complex legal and practical challenges to asset recovery, Dr Olaniyan characteristically proffers well-thought-out suggestions for reforms which if implemented will be a welcome relief to victims denied of their natural wealth and resources.

“Dr Olaniyan’s book is a seminar contribution to judicial and non-judicial approaches to issues of asset recovery and human rights. For this treatise, Dr. Olaniyan deserves our applause. All victims of corruption are indeed indebted,” Atoki said.

Juan Mendez, Professor of Human Rights Law in Residence, American University – Washington College of Law Commissioner, International Commission of Jurists, said Olaniyan’s new book is an excellent and important analysis of the understanding of the complex issues of corruption, asset recovery and human rights.

“It makes a significant contribution to the pursuit of access to justice and effective remedies for victims of corruption everywhere.

“The book is also a huge contribution to the global efforts to prevent corruption as a central objective of democratic public policy and business and commercial policy,” he said.

Director, Human Rights Implementation Centre, University of Bristol Law School UK, Professor Rachel Murray, said the book offers an original academic but also practitioner perspective on the interplay between the legal rules on asset recovery and human rights law.

“Dr Olaniyan innovatively applies an international human rights law framework to issues of ownership of proceeds of corruption and in so doing advancing the idea of access of victims to effective remedies.

“I would highly recommend this very impressive work as a valuable resource for students, academics, and professionals alike,” he said.

Secretary General, African Development Bank Group. Professor Vincent O. Nmehielle, said Olaniyan raises provocative questions that entities and individuals in the space of preventing and combatting all forms of corruption in domestic and international jurisdictions need to think deeply about.

He added: “The place given to the victims of corruption in the international efforts on asset recovery needs to be rethought.

“Dr Olaniyan’s book provides compelling theoretical, philosophical and legal arguments to vindicate the basic rights of victims of corruption in the context of asset recovery.

“I commend Dr. Olaniyan in his foresight in adding yet another important monograph to the scholarly literature on the impact of corruption on the lives of citizens of countries.

“This timely book breaks new grounds and would be a very useful resource to scholars, private sector actors, and policy makers alike.”

Senior Partner at Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), has urged young lawyers to find their niche to succeed in the legal profession.

He advised the firm’s end-of-the-year party.

A former Senior Associate at the firm, Adeyinka Abdulsalam, was announced as a new partner at the event.

He was until his elevation the Assistant Head for the Maritime, Aviation and Transport Law Practice Groups.

According to Chief Idigbe, Punuka has survived these years because the firm focuses on expert knowledge and has built competence in areas it has a competitive advantage.

He, therefore, urged aspiring lawyers and firms to be well-focused and build knowledge in their areas of strength.

“As parochial as the Nigerian system seems to be, there is still space for merit,” he said.

The senior partner also praised the members of staff for proving their worth and helping to entrench the firm’s strength and competence.

He said: “One thing I find interesting is that as parochial as the Nigerian system seems to be, there is space for merit.

“We found it and we are there. So I will urge colleagues in this profession to find their space in the market.

“At Punuka, we believe in merit, even in how we handle our cases and deal with our clients.

“Because we are based on merit, we believe your work will lead you to the next stage, not patronage, emotions, ethnicity or parochial considerations. Be focused and you will move ahead.

“At Punuka, our greatest asset is our human capital, and we encourage them to reach for the greatest peak of their careers.

“It is also good to focus on areas of strength and competence.

“One thing that has made Punuka survive and stand out is our focus on expert knowledge.

“We continue to build on our areas of competence – capital market, insolvency, construction law, arbitration, and laws.

“We can’t do everything, but we understand that if we are well-focused, we will cut our niche in the market. We seem to have found our space and we are there.”

Managing Partner of the firm, Mrs Elizabeth Idigbe, said it was important to unwind and relax because “law is a serious profession, coupled with the difficulties in the country”.

She said: “This end-of-year party is important to us because we started the year with everyone and, by the grace of God, we are ending it with everyone. That is enough reason to thank God.

“Also because God has been awesome this year, despite all the economic challenges, it wasn’t bad for us, so we thank God.

“We are also doing this to thank our clients who continue to believe in us. We want them to see how grateful we are to them because, at the end of the day, relationships matter more than money.”

To the young aspiring lawyers, Mrs Idigbe advised: “Make sure you know; do something new every year, and learn another area of the practice because your breakthrough can come from any area.

“Punuka is a full-service law firm with various practice groups, so we always encourage our young lawyers to always study.

“Our Senior Partner continues to learn not because he needs a job, but so he can know these areas of law and provide the best suitable service to clients.

“So, I tell young lawyers to acquire knowledge and have integrity; don’t because of the harsh economy do unethical things with your clients.”

The party featured dance, games, awards and special recognition for deserving members of staff.

Farmers’ Association Expresses Solidarity with Tingo Group https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2023/12/27/farmers-association-expresses-solidarity-with-tingo-group/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 00:20:45 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=938394

Precious Ugwuzor

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has declared its unflinching support for Tingo Group.

The association was reacting to the  accusation leveled against the Tingo Group by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

In a press statement on Wednesday, AFAN said it “acknowledges the ongoing case brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) involving Tingo, a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

“AFAN stands unwavering in its support for Tingo recognising the critical role its ecosystem of products and services play in the daily lives of millions of Nigerian farmers.

“Tingo’s contributions are instrumental in empowering millions and any disruption could have far reaching consequences.”

Some local online media had reported that the US Securities and Exchange Commission said the Tingo Group lied in the financial status of its subsidiary; Tingo Mobile’s Nigeria’s bank account.

The AFAN had therefore called for considerate, transport and balanced approach.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Tingo Group, Mr. Dozy Mmobuosi reacting to the media reports said Tingo has never raised money in any market adding that he, not Tingo is currently building the food processing facility in his home town of Onicha-Ugbo.

He wondered why the Security and Exchange Commission is not looking into the operations of MICT in Asia as he insisted that the livelihood of millions of farmers is at stake.

It would be recalled that at least ten million farmers in Nigeria have fully adopted the Tingo Mobile’s smart phone application which enables them conduct their business transactions seamlessly from the comfort of their homes.

In the same vein, Tingo Group; a leading provider of Fin-Tech solutions in Nigeria had reached deals with the foremost farmers’ association, AFAN on supply and storage of farms produce particularly rice and wheat as the firm made in roads to export business.

President of AFAN, Farouk Rabiu Mudi had expressed his appreciation for the significant investment from Tingo Mobile Plc, emphasising the positive impact it will have on Nigerian farmers. Mudi stated that the loan facility will greatly enhance their ability to cultivate extensive hectares of land, leading to transformative improvements in rice and wheat production.

He acknowledged Tingo’s dedication to Nigeria’s agricultural development and reiterated AFAN’s commitment to responsible fund.

Tingo Mobile some months ago announced that it had provided a N3 Billion approximately USD $6.5 Million loan facility to the All farmers Assocication of Nigeria (AFAN) for the primary purpose of cultivating 3,000 hectares of new farm lands for rice and wheat production.

In a statement from the firm to newsmen then, the company said AFAN would also utilise part of the loan facility to accelerate the on boarding of its warehouses to the Tingo Mobile partnership with Prime Commodity Exchange (PCX) and AFAN, as part of its target to achieve a network of 80,000 warehouses in two years, as announced on April 26, 2023.

The statement then stated that the new 3,000 hectares of cultivated farming land is expected to generate an additional 6,000 metric tons of wheat per annum and an additional 16,000 metric tons of rice per annum, with a combined market value of USD $17.5 million per annum.

The statement then further added that the deal was first of many other planned financing and production deals with AFAN, to be expanded to cover other crop types, stressing that the arrangement would be become a very significant source of supply into both the Tingo Foods processing business, for onward supply of finished food and beverage products to domestic and international markets, and the Tingo DMCC business for direct export.

The firm had noted that through AFAN’s position as the umbrella body of all 56 recognised commodities and agricultural associations in Nigeria, the extension and strengthening of the relationship between the parties is expected to be highly valuable for the overall Tingo group eco-system.

The statement had stressed that AFAN’s utilisation of part of the facility to accelerate the onboarding of more warehouses to the Tingo Mobile, PCX and AFAN partnership is also expected to be very valuable to the Tingo group, as such additional warehouses not only strengthen Tingo Mobile’s infrastructure, goods handling and logistics capabilities, they also expand Tingo Food’s and Tingo DMCC’s access to produce through the right of first refusal agreement over goods received into the warehouses.

The firm had pointed out that the various facets of the new financing and production agreement with AFAN are expected to have a material impact on Tingo’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals of increasing food production, improving food security, and empowering delivering financial upliftment to the farmer.

‘Better with Carton’, Tetra Pak’s Initiative for Sustainable Future  Product Packaging https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2023/12/20/better-with-carton-tetra-paks-initiative-for-sustainable-future-product-packaging/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 02:29:29 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=936697

Tetra Pak, a world leading food and beverage processing and packaging company, has launched an initiative tagged: better with carton’ in

2023. With its ‘protects what’s good’ slogan, Precious Ugwuzor writes that it  represents an intellectual and ecological paradigm shift, proactively enlightening  children and other stakeholders on the intrinsic ecological advantages of carton packaging

Children are tomorrow leaders and so need to be aware of the environment in all the efforts at creating a better, safer and more healthy world. Children during growth periods, experience or encounter environmental chemicals which may affect their normal development.

By learning more about these chemicals and developments, children can help  reduce their chances of poor health while improving their growth and quality of life.

Educating children about the environment allows them to explore environmental issues, engage in problem-solving, and take action to improve the environment.

When children are encouraged to research, investigate how and why things happen, and form their own opinions on issues concerning the environment, we are helping them to promote critical and creative thinking skills and inspire them to become more engaged with their communities and  understand why the environment is important, while also providing them with the building blocks they need to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives.

Tetra Pak, a world leading food and beverage processing and packaging company with prominence in the West African subregion in 2023 launched an initiative tagged: better with carton’ in

2023. The campaign was aimed at highlighting the many advantages of carton packed beverages and educating the millions of consumers across Nigeria and West Africa on the many ways carton packaging makes their lives better.

Featuring several activities namely: trade activation, customer activation, and media publicity the campaign drew to a close with the school activation programme/advocacy.

Designed to reach over 4500 pupils in select schools across Lagos State, the programme featured: Talks on the Better with Carton messaging, distribution of sketch books and coloring materials, Better with Carton pledge and commitment wall signing by children as well as presentation of furniture including desks and chairs to the selected schools.

The desks and chairs were made from used beverage cartons and will serve as a reminder to the kids to protect the environment by turning their waste into new useful products.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr Anthony Idigbe, has urged the Federal Government to priotise primary education. He spoke after being conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by the Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja.

The ceremony was held during the institution’s 12th convocation lecture and ceremonies at the weekend.
Idigbe, Senior Partner at Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, was honoured in recognition of his contributions to national development, law and academia.

He has over 40 years of experience in corporate governance, insolvency, business restructuring, arbitration, dispute resolution, privatisation, capital markets, mergers & acquisitions, and oil and gas.

Idigbe holds a doctorate in cross-border insolvency from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

He is the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dominican University and co-founder of the Punuka Foundation.
Speaking with reporters after accepting his honorary doctorate, Idigbe called for more investment in primary education.

He said: “It is easier to mould a child from the primary school level.
“With good moulding from that stage, it becomes easier for the child to become a better person during secondary school and university level, but the first training a child needs is the foundation which is the primary level.

“A strong foundation in languages, sciences, culture and civics is needed.
“These habits and learning are better created when these children are young and their minds are ready.

“At the tertiary level, the government seems to be doing a little better, but then if the foundation is weak, there is a problem.

“This is why all efforts should be geared towards starting with the children from primary school.”

Idigbe said the honour was significant to him knowing that the society recognises the effort he has put into giving back, especially through his work on social justice, charity and other involvement in university activities.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hyacinth Eme Ichoku, urged the graduating students to imbibe a life of integrity, sacrifice, excellence, innovation, responsibility and entrepreneurship.

“Keep nurturing these values by consistently and patiently putting them into practice, knowing that people who achieve these goals do so with passion; life immersed in time-tested core value,” he said.
The VC, a reverend father, added that they should let God have the first place in their lives, work and relationships.

The Naval Officers Wives Association Lagos Island has awarded scholarships to four children in Raco Orphanage who are currently in senior secondary school (SSS1) to complete their secondary education.

The group led by NOWA Lagos Island Zonal Director, Oluwabukola Bankole also donated lots of food items and toiletries to the orphanage during their visit to the home in Ibeju Lekki at the weekend.

Speaking at the event, Oluwabukola Bankole NOWA Lagos Island Zonal Director said: “For years, it has been our focus to ensure that we touch lives positively. Our anchor drive is to touch lives positively within our environs, that is within and outside the Navy family. We all know that when we train a child through secondary education, we impact the nation.”

Explaining further, Bankole stated that with the support of our National President, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogalla, the wife of the current Chief of Naval Staff, we requested to come visit this orphanage because it has been like our baby project for the past years.

“We decided to go beyond donating food items to giving scholarships to four students in the orphanage. At this trying period, we know that it is best that we not only give them food but also to see how best they can continue with their education. We are sponsoring four students through secondary school from SS1 to SS3 and more.”

“It is worthy to note that NOWA is a non-governmental organisation and we are majorly sponsored by our husbands, with little or no assistance from corporate organisations, ” she added.

Agbor Stakeholders Decry Relentless Hounding, Persecution of Emefiele https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2023/12/04/agbor-stakeholders-decry-relentless-hounding-persecution-of-emefiele/ Sun, 03 Dec 2023 23:37:00 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=931432

Agbor Stakeholders Forum, yesterday decried what it described as the relentless hounding and persecution of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

In a statement signed by Kachiku Kanene for Agbor Stakeholders Forum, the group said: “We, the stakeholders and elders of Agbor stock have watched with concern and indeed, consternation, the relentless hounding and persecution of our brother and mentor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

“Emefiele who has been the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the past nine years is currently being sequestered and shackled like a common criminal by the Nigerian state he has served so diligently over these years.

” A few days after the inception of the current administration (on May 9th precisely), Mr. Emefiele was suspended from office as governor of the CBN for no stated reason.

“This was done regardless that his position is tenured and still subsisting – until he was removed under duress. The following day, (June 10), our brother was virtually ‘abducted’ from his Lagos home by officials of the Department of State Service (DSS) and flown to Abuja in a manner fit only fora renegade.

“Our brother has not been allowed to return home since then. Almost six months after, Mr Emefiele has remained in the custody of the DSS; and lately, the EFCC. No charge was filed against him for a long spell of incarceration.

“Several court orders had been secured for his release but they were serially and flagrantly disobeyed by the DSS. Judging by the ferocity with which Emefiele is being pursued, it seems someone wants him dead.

“What is Emefiele’s offence? Recall that in February, DSS had told the world that its preliminary investigations revealed that Emefiele committed various acts of terrorism financing and involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension.

” But to our surprise, when Emefiele was finally arraigned at the Federal High Court lkoyi, Lagos after six weeks of further investigations, all they could charge him for was illegal possession of one single-barrel shotgun and ammunition.

“No mention was made of economic crimes or terrorism financing. It is remarkable that though Emefiele was hurriedly removed from his Ikoyi residence on June 10, a shotgun was to be found in the same house on June 15th while he was being held in Abuja.

” This is a pointer to the fact that the evidence against Emefiele was only being dredged up after he was arrested. Now the only charge the DSS preferred against Emefiele was possession of a shotgun and few rounds of ammunition.

” But most troubling is that our brother was again bodily prised from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) by officials of the DSS in flagrant contempt of the Lagos court that had granted him bail and specifically ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

“But to the shock of Nigerians, the DSS had secured an anticipatory order from another court to counter the orders of the court they were arraigning him in. The question is: what is the special interest on our brother?”

On the disdain for the serial court orders, the Agbor Stakeholders said: “It is noteworthy that nearly half a dozen courts in Nigeria had ruled in favour of outright release of Emefiele or that he be granted bail. But all the orders were shunned by the DSS.

” Here area few: on December 29, 2022, Justice M.A. Hassan of the FHC, Maitama, FCT, Abuja, issued a restraining order on the DSS to among others, refrain from arresting, detaining, proceeding against him, breaching or interfering with his personal liberty and freedom of movement; or taking any other steps against him in connection with any other allegation… before or from any other courts from the date of this judgment of Justice M. A. Hassan.

“On July 13th, 2023 another FCT High Court Justice Hamza Muazu) sitting in Maitama Abuja, had ordered the DSS to charge Emefiele to court or release him.

“On July 14th, 2023, Justice Bello Kawu of the FCT High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja voided Emefiele’s arrest and detention as a violation of a subsisting judgment and order of Hon. Justice M.A. Hassan. These judgments and more were ignored.”

Allegeding that this was a vendetta over the naira redesign policy, they said “the traducers of our brother are willing to break any law of the land and deny him any basic freedom and rights in order to punish him for carrying out his statutory duties during his time as governor of CBN.

“There’s no doubt that Emefiele’s unjust detention, emotional torture and rubbishing of his image has to do with President Muhammadu Buhari’s naira redesign policy of last year.

“Recall that the APC federal government had moved to change the face of Nigeria’s currency in the run up to the 2023 elections. The reasons stated were: to reduce inflation and shore up the currency’s value by calling in huge cash stockpile in the hands of politicians.

” President Buhari had stated openly that he desired a free and fair election that was not mired by vote buying. This policy which was obviously initiated by the President didn’t go down well with many APC candidates and politicians who saw it as a ploy by the presidency to hamper their electoral chances.

” The policy seemed to be designed to starve them vote-buying cash. They had dragged the CBN and the president to court then. Today, Emefiele is being punished for taking directives from his boss, the former president in the course of a routine, legitimate, government business.”

In their appeal, the stakeholders and leaders of Agbor noted that they were  pained “that our brother is being ridiculed and dragged in the muck by a country he served so creditably well. And we now have strong fears that someone wants out brother dead.

“Recall that Emefiele, a successful banker who as managing director of the biggest and most profitable bank in Nigeria before he was headhunted to run the apex bank, was one of the pillars of the Buhari administration and the APC government.

” It’s on record that Emefiele went beyond the call of duty to initiate far-reaching fiscal and development initiatives in agriculture, infrastructure and poverty alleviation. We remember that before the currency redesign episode, Emefiele’s CBN was hailed as the face of the Buhari administration and the signpost of critical achievements in rice production and agric development in general.

“Even though no single case of corruption has been levelled against Emefiele and the CBN, yet President Tinubu has just ordered a forensic audit of the apex Bank. It is uncanny that CBN is the only federal institution being so x-rayed after eight years of Buhari.

“With the elections over, and the diadem won and lost, we appeal to President Bola Tinubu to be magnanimous in victory and allow our brother to return home with some honour and dignity to take his well deserved rest along with other former Buhari appointees who have returned to their homesteads unmolested.

“We make bold to say that but for the ugly political turn of events in the APC, Emefiele was serving out his term as a hero of the Buhari era. Once again, we plead with our president Please let our brother go”.
