OPM free specialist hospitals: First church owned 24 hours free hospital https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/21/opm-free-specialist-hospitals-first-church-owned-24-hours-free-hospital/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/21/opm-free-specialist-hospitals-first-church-owned-24-hours-free-hospital/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2024 23:28:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014355

…performs 100% free surgical operations

If there is any Church owned functional free hospital in the world that runs a 24 hours 100% free service and free surgical operations, it is OPM free specialist hospitals in port Harcourt, Nigeria.

OPM free specialist hospitals is one of the visions of His Royal Majesty King Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, Founder and General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM) and Ihie 1 of Ikwuorie Ancient kingdom to provide the health needs of many Nigerians and reduce the high rate of maternal and child death in Nigeria.

OPM free hospital was commissioned in Ohanku Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State more than 10 years ago before the commissioning of the second OPM free specialist hospital in port Harcourt on 17th April 2019 to Carter for the less privileged Nigerians especially the pregnant mothers. This hospital runs free ante natal services.
From registration, drugs, Scan, delivery and Cesarean sessions are all free.

OPM free specialist hospitals have a blood bank In case of emergencies, this is Why the OPM free specialist hospitals run steady Diesel generators due to the irregular power supply from the electricity distribution company.

It is instructive to note that while others may operate a free hospital and still charge people for drugs, scan and others, in OPM free specialist hospitals everything is free.

King Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere has spent a whooping sum of money on the purchase of diesel alone apart from paying workers salaries and consultant specialist Doctors who are always on ground to attend to the health needs of the patients.

The free specialist Hospital which is located at plot 3 Akporo Rd, Omuahunwo Aluu, Port Harcourt has its rooms built in suites and is equipped with modern facilities to give pregnant women the best medical care. Some of the services offered are Antenatal services Blood bank Delivery services, Free CS, Drugs Etc

Joint reports on maternal mortality by the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, World Bank and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that Nigeria has approximately 58,000 maternal deaths, accounting for 19 per cent globally.

This means that at least 800 women die in every 100,000 live births and to address the high maternal mortality rates, the former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, in July 2017 inaugurated a 34- Members Taskforce to accelerate reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria.

The high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria as revealed by the reports of the world renowned agencies became a source of worry for King Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, the Founder and General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM).

“I sat down and asked myself what can be done to reduce maternal mortality and to help these women who don’t have money to cater for their healthcare, that is why we decided to build this free specialist hospital,” he said.

As it stands, hope of a better healthcare seems to have come the way of the poor and less privileged in Nigeria, especially those in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Niger Delta Region, Imo State and Abia State with the construction and inauguration of a Free Specialist Hospital by the OPM.

The hospital which renders specialist services also offers antenatal care. This is a welcome development as hundreds of people die daily, especially pregnant women because of their inability to pay and access quality healthcare.

Establishing the free hospital didn’t come as a surprise. Activities of the hospital dated back to 2010 when the Founder of the church, King Apostle Chinyere introduced free antenatal care for the less privileged pregnant women in Ohanku Ndoki Abia State and Aluu town in Rivers State.

The gesture eventually resulted in the construction of the free hospital in Abia State and Port Harcourt to ensure the less privileged continued to have access to good healthcare.

The hospital which boasts of state-of-the-art equipment has ambulance services that can respond quickly to any distress call and uninterrupted electric supply.

According to Apostle Chinyere, prominent figures in the field of medicine is in charge of recruitment of Doctors and Nurses for the hospital in order to get the best personnel.

“We are in partnership with the UPTH, in case of any complicated issue that we can’t handle and then we move them there.

“All these things are done free; the people are not paying one Kobo for the services and we are working to establish a more free hospital across the country.
This is a good gesture that well meaning Nigerians should partner with. Institutions such as WHO, UNICEF, UNITED NATION, EUROPEAN UNION, UNDP and others should also partner and support OPM free specialist hospitals to prove free medical care across the 36 states in Nigeria.
Recall that over 4000 babies have been delivered in OPM free specialist hospitals without any record of death since inception of the free hospital.

King Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere in his magnanimity has also instructed the management of the free hospital to be feeding people who delivered and give them transport to go home with their babies after being discharged from the hospital facilities.

The Threat of Deepfakes: AI and ML in Fight Against Synthetic Media https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/21/the-threat-of-deepfakes-ai-and-ml-in-fight-against-synthetic-media/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/21/the-threat-of-deepfakes-ai-and-ml-in-fight-against-synthetic-media/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2024 23:01:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014325

Deepfakes, a type of synthetic media produced using artificial intelligence have lately been somewhat well-known due to their incredible realism in audio, video, and picture manipulation. Deepfakes, which are now used for public dishonesty, false information distribution, and reputation damage, have progressed from a benign form of online amusement to a major cause of worry.

In his perspective, the Co-founder Eybrids,  Ahmed Olabisi Olajide, noted the increasing complexity makes it more difficult to separate actual from fake information. To keep people’s trust in news sources in today’s fast-paced, social media-driven media environment, deepfakes must be identified and prevented.

Given the prospective disruption of political processes, effects on financial markets, and erosion of public trust brought about by deepfakes, effective detection techniques are important. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are used to neutralise this threat.

AI driven systems are advancing in their capacity to detect deepfakes using pattern, anomaly, and deviation analysis of audiovisual data.

AI uses deep learning and neural networks to enable the recognition of changing material, therefore protecting digital platforms from the dangers of synthetic content. This article covers the significance of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the battle against deepfakes as well as the continuous developments of these technologies.

The Evolution of Deepfakes

From simple picture editing to complex film and audio creation, deepfakes have developed over time. Though the technique originated in early work on face recognition in the 1990s, the word “deepfake” did not initially come up until 2017. Deepfakes might overcome its initial limitation (that of face-swapping in still images) partly due to developments in machine learning, especially Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs).

Using a generator of phoney material and a discriminator, the GANs introduced in 2014 aim to distinguish between real and fake. This competitive process continually improves the quality of contents that are generated. By 2018, deepfake technology had progressed to creating convincing video and audio, sparking both awe and concern.

Today, deepfakes can manipulate facial expressions, lip movements, and voice in real-time, blurring the line between reality and fiction. This technology has found applications in entertainment and education but also poses significant challenges. Privacy concerns arise as anyone’s likeness can be co-opted without consent. Security threats emerge from potential misuse in fraud or disinformation campaigns.

Perhaps most critically, deepfakes erode trust in digital media, making it increasingly difficult to discern authentic content from fabrications.

AI and Machine Learning Approaches to Detecting Deepfakes

Detecting deepfakes requires sophisticated AI and machine learning (ML) techniques capable of recognizing subtle anomalies in synthetic content.

Deepfakes, generated using techniques like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), often contain small discrepancies that are difficult for the human eye to detect but can be identified through AI-powered analysis. AI-based detection techniques leverage vast amounts of data and advanced algorithms to learn patterns that differentiate real media from deepfakes.

Facial Movement Analysis: Real faces move naturally, with specific muscle patterns and micro-expressions that deepfake algorithms struggle to replicate perfectly. AI models analyse these facial dynamics, tracking the synchronization between lip movement and audio, eye blinking rates, or slight shifts in facial muscles to detect discrepancies in manipulated videos.

Audio Inconsistencies: Deepfake videos often feature mismatches between the audio track and the visual content. For instance, AI can pick up on unnatural speech patterns, irregularities in sound frequency, or mismatches between mouth movements and spoken words. These abnormalities can be flagged by AI systems designed to match audio to visuals.

Pixel-level Analysis: This is another effective AI-driven approach. Deepfake generators, while sophisticated, tend to leave pixel anomalies, particularly at the boundary of manipulated regions (e.g., around the eyes, mouth, or skin texture). AI can detect these pixel-level irregularities, which are often too subtle for human viewers to notice but are indicative of digital tampering.

AI-Powered Spatial and Temporal Analysis: This can scrutinize video frames for inconsistencies across time. While an individual frame may appear realistic, examining the sequence of frames often reveals inconsistencies in motion or lighting, which deepfakes fail to maintain consistently. These subtle distortions can signal that a video has been digitally altered.

The Arms Race: Deepfake Creation vs. Detection

The battle between deepfake creators and detectors is a continuous arms race. As AI and machine learning tools improve at detecting synthetic media, deepfake creators respond by refining their techniques, making detection increasingly difficult. This cycle of advancement is driven by the dual capabilities of AI, which plays a key role in both the creation and detection of deepfakes.

On one side, deepfake creators leverage technologies like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to produce increasingly sophisticated synthetic media. GANs consist of two neural networks—the generator, which creates fake content, and the discriminator, which attempts to identify real versus fake content.

As the discriminator improves, the generator learns to produce even more realistic deepfakes, creating an ever-evolving challenge for detection systems.

This feedback loop enables deepfake creators to generate media that are harder to distinguish from authentic content.

On the other side, advancements in AI detection technologies prompt creators to innovate further. For example, when facial movement analysis became a popular detection method, deepfake algorithms improved their ability to replicate natural facial dynamics. Similarly, pixel-level analysis of deepfakes spurred creators to enhance image resolution and reduce detectable inconsistencies.

As detection techniques evolve, so do the methods of countering them, resulting in a constant tug-of-war.

AI itself is central to both sides of this arms race. The same machine learning models that power detection systems also underpin deepfake generation tools. This dual role of AI presents a unique challenge—while it helps in defending against synthetic media, it also serves as the foundation for producing increasingly convincing deepfakes.

The result is a perpetual cycle of creation and detection, where advances on one side directly fuel innovation on the other. This arms race continues to shape the future of media integrity and security.

Key Technologies in Deepfake Detection

The rapid advancement of deepfakes has prompted the development of sophisticated AI and machine learning technologies to detect synthetic content. These technologies harness the power of neural networks, deep learning models, and advanced forensics techniques to identify even the most subtle manipulations. Here’s a detailed look at some of the top technologies used in deepfake detection.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs): Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are among the most widely used AI tools in deepfake detection. CNNs excel at processing and analyzing visual data, making them ideal for detecting image and video anomalies.

By breaking down visual content into smaller pixel-level units, CNNs can identify inconsistencies that are typically invisible to the human eye. For example, they can detect subtle differences in skin texture, lighting, and facial expressions across frames. Trained on massive datasets of real and fake media, CNNs learn to spot even the slightest signs of tampering. Their ability to handle complex visual data makes them central to the detection of deepfake videos.

GANs for Detecting Deepfakes: Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), the very technology used to create deepfakes, are also employed in detecting them. GANs consist of two neural networks: a generator that creates fake content and a discriminator that tries to distinguish between real and fake.

In detection, GANs are used to reverse-engineer deepfake generation processes by analysing and comparing real content with synthetically produced media. Detection-focused GANs excel at identifying unusual artifacts in deepfake videos, such as inconsistencies in lighting, facial alignment, or audio mismatches.

Audio-Visual Forensics: Audio-visual forensics integrates AI-driven techniques to analyse both the video and audio components of media. Deepfakes often struggle to perfectly sync voice and facial movements, creating detectable discrepancies. By analysing the synchronization between lip movement and speech, AI algorithms can detect subtle differences that suggest manipulation. Additionally, deepfakes tend to introduce audio artifacts, such as unnatural pauses or pitch irregularities, which can be flagged by forensic tools. This method is especially useful for catching deepfake videos where the speaker’s words and facial movements don’t align naturally.

Real-World Applications: AI-based deepfake detection technologies have found crucial applications in various fields. In media, news organizations are employing these tools to verify the authenticity of video content before broadcasting. Security agencies use AI to detect deepfakes in surveillance footage or to prevent the spread of disinformation during elections. In law enforcement, deepfake detection helps combat criminal activities like fraud or impersonation by identifying doctored evidence.

Social media platforms are increasingly deploying AI-powered detection tools to remove manipulated content, safeguarding user trust.

Challenges in Deepfake Detection

Despite significant advancements, deepfake detection technologies face several challenges that limit their effectiveness. As deepfake creation methods become more sophisticated, the limitations of current AI and machine learning models are increasingly exposed.

Limitations of AI Models: One major challenge is the inability of AI models to keep pace with the rapid evolution of deepfake techniques. Deepfake generation tools, especially those based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), are constantly improving, making it harder for existing detection models to identify fakes. Additionally, detection tools often rely on massive datasets for training, and deepfake creators can exploit unseen techniques that the AI hasn’t been trained to detect. This means that newer, more advanced deepfakes may bypass even the most advanced detection algorithms.

Ethical Concerns and Bias: AI detection systems are not immune to biases. Detection algorithms may perform unevenly across different demographics, such as race, gender, or age, leading to false positives or negatives. For instance, facial recognition and detection models have historically struggled with people of colour due to unbalanced training data, which raises concerns about fairness and inclusivity. Ethical questions also arise when it comes to privacy, as detecting deepfakes may require intrusive data collection, such as facial scans or personal audio recordings, which could infringe on individual rights.

Accessibility and Open-Source Tools: Many advanced deepfake detection tools are developed by large corporations or government agencies, limiting public access. The lack of open-source detection software means that smaller organizations, independent media outlets, and the general public have fewer resources to detect deepfakes. This disparity in access puts underfunded groups at a disadvantage when combating misinformation. The need for more accessible and open-source tools is crucial in ensuring that everyone can participate in the fight against deepfakes and safeguard the integrity of information.

Future Trends: What Lies Ahead?

The future of deepfake detection is set to be shaped by emerging technologies and innovative approaches aimed at staying ahead of increasingly sophisticated synthetic media. As deepfakes evolve, more accurate and reliable detection tools are needed to safeguard the integrity of digital content. Here are some key trends that are likely to shape the future of deepfake detection.

Advanced AI Tools: One of the most promising trends is the development of more sophisticated AI tools, such as self-supervised learning and transformer models. Unlike traditional deep learning models that require massive datasets, self-supervised models can learn from smaller data samples, making them more adaptable to new and evolving deepfake techniques. Transformer models, which have revolutionized natural language processing, are being adapted to analyse and cross-verify both visual and audio data, improving detection accuracy. These advanced tools will enhance AI’s ability to identify subtle anomalies in deepfakes.

Blockchain for Decentralized Verification: Blockchain technology offers a novel solution to the deepfake problem through decentralized media verification. By creating immutable records of media content at the point of creation, blockchain can verify the authenticity of images, videos, and audio files as they circulate online. Any alterations to the original content can be detected through the blockchain ledger, ensuring transparency and accountability.

This decentralized approach empowers content creators and consumers to verify the integrity of digital media without relying on centralized platforms.

AI-Based Content Verification: The future will likely see the integration of AI-based content verification systems across social media platforms, news organizations, and security agencies. These systems could operate in real-time, flagging potential deepfakes as they are uploaded or shared. Combined with technologies like digital watermarking, which embeds hidden, tamper-proof identifiers in media, AI-based systems will offer an automated, scalable solution to deepfake detection.

On his conclusion, Olajide noted that the  ongoing battle against deepfakes highlights the crucial role that AI and machine learning play in preserving the integrity of digital media. Through advanced techniques like CNN, GANs, and audio-visual forensics, these technologies enable the detection of subtle manipulations in synthetic media, helping to safeguard trust in what we consume online. However, the continuous arms race between deepfake creators and detectors underscores the need for ongoing innovation. The continued development of AI-driven detection tools is vital to staying ahead of increasingly sophisticated deepfakes. As the technology evolves, so too must our defences. Ensuring the authenticity of digital content is not just a technical challenge but a societal imperative to protect individuals, institutions, and the broader public from the harmful impacts of misinformation and deception in an ever-expanding digital landscape.

That lady suddenly falls in love for the “First Time” and gets disappointed by a “Foolish” guy. After all the mixed emotions, she struggles to overcome “Over You”. As part of the distractions to rise above the heartbreak, she takes to the dance floor to “Dance” and ultimately realises that she needs to be strong again, refocus and rebuild herself “Margins”.

Each track on the EP serves as a window into her soul. Emelonye bravely tackles the intricacies of love, growth, and self-discovery. The project is a masterclass in storytelling, where her rich, emotive vocals guide us through a spectrum of feelings.

The food bank provided essential items such as rice, beans, pasta, noodles, vegetable oil, palm oil, yam, semovita, clothes, shoes, toys for children, and financial assistance. World Bank, IMF interfering with Nigerian universities – Omole, LAUTECH pro-chancellor
Pro-chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Professor Ayodeji Omole, has said Nigerian universities are already working in the shadows of death, narrating how the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) summon Vice Chancellors at intervals.

Omole stated this while delivering the 561st inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan at the Trenchard Hall of the university on Thursday.
He said as a result of the neo-liberal policies, focus has shifted from education being seen as public good to a commodity.

Such implementation of neo-liberal policies, he added, have led to commercialization of education, education seen as a commodity, erosion of academic freedom, chronic underfunding, increased bureaucracy, devaluation of humanities and social sciences as well as emphasis on entrepreneur and vocational training.

“Neo-liberal policies, characterized by an emphasis on market-oriented reforms, privatization, deregulation, and a reduction in state involvement, have had significant implications for Nigerian universities.
“An ideal university is more than just a place for acquiring knowledge. It is a community dedicated to fostering growth, innovation and positive change. It prepares students not only for careers but also for meaningful lives as informed and responsible global citizens. Universities are supposed to be the training grounds for producing critics who serve as watchdogs of the society.

“Just like a typical forest Engineer working in the shadows of death, Nigerian Universities are also already working in the shadows of death. This is as a result of deliberate imposition of some neo-liberal policies on the University system without critical analyses.
“Nigerian can no longer run an ideal University system, due to regular interference from the World Bank and IMF. Vice Chancellors are regularly summoned for briefings sometimes twice a week and therefore are not allowed to run the Universities, they were appointed to run.”

Speaking further, Omole described the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) as a mismatch with university work structure.
“It is incompatible with the academic calendar, and a clear violation of the University Act. Therefore, it is illegal.
“Only in Nigeria is the database of scholars surrendered to foreign agencies in the name of cutting cost. The effects of which are threatening the very existence of the University system in Nigeria today, because it is now impossible for universities to recruit even cleaners,” Omole added.

Omole also condemned the proposed introduction of Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is another policy that will kill Nigerian universities.
“The proposed imposition of Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is another policy that will kill Nigerian Universities, faster than expected. Nigerian government and their so-called developing partners should allow the University system to breath.

“The rigid standardization will definitely limit the universities’ ability to innovate and design programmes to meet societal needs; because local content and flavour are ignored. It will kill innovation and creativity. We should rather be talking of quality and excellence, rather than minimum standard and lowering the overall academic quality, thus killing critical thinking.

“Unfortunately, many Directors of Academic Planning in our various universities are struggling to be the first to impose the scheme on their universities, in order to be in the good book of Abuja, for political patronage at the expense of the university system.
“I felt sad that the University of Ibadan Senate eventually caved in from its earlier courageous stand in opposition to this anti-intellectual policy that is designed to further put the university system under perpetual slavery.”

He added that underfunding in Nigerian universities further compounded the running of an ideal university system.
“Under-funding in Nigerian universities has led to a range of problems that affect the quality of education, research, and overall institutional performance. This has manifested in the form of deterioration of infrastructure, poor facilities, brain drain/loss of talent, labour/student unrest, erosion of university autonomy, low morale among staff, decline in global ranking and reputation.

“These affect productivity, commitment, and willingness to engage in advanced research or innovative teaching methods. In summary, the under-funding of Nigerian universities is a significant barrier to the advancement of education, research, and national development.
“Poor remuneration in Nigerian universities has far-reaching consequences for the future of the university system, affecting its ability to deliver quality education, retain talent, and contribute to national development,” Omole added.

To address the challenges, he called for increased investment in higher education, better financial management, and strategic policies that prioritize the long-term sustainability and improvement of the university system.

Accord Party Candidate, Iyere Withdraws from Guber Race https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/accord-party-candidate-iyere-withdraws-from-guber-race/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/accord-party-candidate-iyere-withdraws-from-guber-race/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 23:08:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014039

Comrade Kennedy Iyere, a renowned humanitarian activist, philanthropist, and serial social entrepreneur, has officially withdrawn from the 2024 Edo Gubernatorial Race as the Accord Party’s candidate.

Iyere cited the need to serve Nigeria at a higher level and wider space, leveraging his expertise to address the country’s social and economic challenges, particularly the food and hunger crisis.

He had previously presented a multi-billion dollar food intervention program, “Food4All Initiative,” to President Tinubu, aiming to achieve food security and mass employment for youths and women through the “One-Family-One-Farmer Scheme.”

Iyere’s decision was also influenced by internal party conflicts, including a conspiracy involving his running mate, Bright Enabulele, who allegedly attempted to overturn his candidacy.

With the election just a day away, Iyere urged eligible voters in Edo State to shun violence and vote their conscience, emphasizing the need for equitable power rotation among the three Senatorial Districts.

According to him, he will focus on national development, assisting the federal government in devising a roadmap for economic inclusion, engagement, and deradicalization of youths through social intervention programs.

He stated that the programs, set to launch in October 2024, aim to create over six million youth and women entrepreneurs, addressing unemployment and poverty alleviation.

Iyere said his alignment with the Federal Government is driven by a selfless desire to serve humanity through public service, rather than partisan politics.

He said: “My focus is no longer on the governorship seat but on a higher and bigger portfolio than a Governor. I want to serve Nigerians at large and not just Edo indigenes. I want to help rebuild Nigeria’s lost economic greatness.

“Serving as a Governor will actually place limitations on me. So, when I saw the plots displayed by Enabulele and some leaders of Accord Party at the State Level, then I knew it was time for me to embrace a higher calling, which was to step up my game to the federal level where I am presently hugely contributing my efforts towards national development.

“I am assisting the federal government to devise a road map for the economic inclusion, engagement, self-emancipation and deradicalisation of youths by designing and driving social intervention programmes that aim to mitigate unemployment and enhance youth and women entrepreneurial opportunities for mass self-employment, wealth creation and poverty alleviation.

“These programmes will fully kick-start in the month of October 2024 and Nigeria will be placed yet again on the pathway of rapid economic recovery. Our intervention programmes will enhance opportunities for youth entrepreneurship engagement in multiple sectors, especially agriculture, food and beverage, technology, entertainment, innovation and creativity.

“More than six million youth and women entrepreneurs (as MSME owners and operators) shall be created or produced within the first one year of the official kick-off of this entrepreneurship programme.

“Nigerian youths and women lack access to the business capital required as entrepreneurs to either start up a new business or operate an existing business. This programme will squarely address that essential need.” Iyere said

NDYC Condemns Politicisation of Security Challenges https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/ndyc-condemns-politicisation-of-security-challenges/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/ndyc-condemns-politicisation-of-security-challenges/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 23:02:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014032

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has strongly condemned the politicisation of security challenges in Nigeria, labeling it a disservice to the nation.

In a statement signed by National Coordinator, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the NDYC emphasised that security should never be politicised, stressing that the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians should not be pawns in anyone’s political game.

Uwejeyan expressed concern over the increasing trend of exploiting security issues for political gain, warning that this could undermine efforts to address the country’s challenges.

“The NDYC hails the work being done by Matawalle and the Defense Ministry in restoring peace and security to Zamfara and the entire North West region.”

The NDYC urged stakeholders to support the Ministry of Defense’s security initiatives, rather than sabotaging efforts to restore lasting peace.

The congress called on the federal government to closely monitor activities that could jeopardise national security and consider declaring a state of emergency in Zamfara, if necessary.

He noted that this move would enable security agencies to operate without political interference, ensuring citizens’ safety and paving the way for the full eradication of banditry and violence.

The NDYC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting every effort aimed at securing peace and stability in Nigeria, urging citizens to remain vigilant in identifying and exposing those who seek to benefit from insecurity.

The congress stressed that the time for political games is over, emphasising the need for unity in the fight against banditry and insecurity.

Innovations That Surprised Us: Predicting Tech Wins and Fails https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/innovations-that-surprised-us-predicting-tech-wins-and-fails/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/innovations-that-surprised-us-predicting-tech-wins-and-fails/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014077

Technology has evolved at a pace faster than anyone could have imagined. Over the years, experts have made predictions about what the future of tech holds—some of these forecasts were spot on, while others missed the mark entirely. The world of innovation is unpredictable, making it both exciting and challenging to forecast accurately.

The Successes in Tech Predictions

The Rise of Smartphones

One of the most accurate predictions in tech history is the rise of smartphones. In the early 2000s, visionaries predicted that mobile phones would eventually become all-in-one devices, replacing many standalone gadgets like cameras, calculators, and computers. This prediction not only came true but exceeded expectations with the smartphone becoming an essential tool in daily life.

Tech companies like Apple and Samsung were at the forefront, and their innovations turned the smartphone into a handheld supercomputer. Features like touchscreens, app stores, and mobile internet access became part of the global lifestyle. These advancements shaped how we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves.

The Growth of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing was another prediction that transformed the tech world. In the early 2000s, experts foresaw a future where data storage and computing power wouldn’t be limited to personal devices but would be available on-demand over the Internet. This concept evolved into cloud computing, which allows businesses and individuals to store data and run software on remote servers.

Today, companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft dominate the cloud industry. According to the research, cloud adoption continues to accelerate, with industries relying on it for flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency. This tech prediction has revolutionized business operations, remote work, and personal data storage.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

Another tech win is the Internet of Things (IoT), a concept predicted long ago but realized only in recent years. IoT connects everyday devices—such as home appliances, vehicles, and wearables—to the internet, allowing them to communicate with each other.

This innovation changed how we live, enabling smart homes and cities. Predictors imagined a future where devices would sync seamlessly to enhance convenience and efficiency, and IoT delivered exactly that. Today, everything from thermostats to refrigerators can be controlled remotely through smartphones.

Tech Predictions That Fell Short

The Segway: A Missed Revolution

Only some tech predictions have been successful. The Segway, introduced in 2001, was marketed as the future of urban transportation. Inventor Dean Kamen believed it would replace cars in cities and lead to a revolution in personal transportation.

However, the Segway never gained the widespread adoption that was anticipated. Several factors contributed to its failure, including its high cost, bulkiness, and the fact that it didn’t solve a real transportation problem. Although the Segway found a niche market in tourism and security, it never achieved the predicted mass appeal.

3D Televisions: A Fad That Failed

In the early 2010s, 3D televisions were hailed as the next big thing in home entertainment. Major tech companies invested heavily in the development and marketing of 3D TV sets, believing that consumers would flock to the immersive experience they offered.

Unfortunately, this prediction turned out to be more of a fad than a lasting trend. High costs, lack of content, and the inconvenience of wearing 3D glasses contributed to its downfall. 3D TVs were pulled from the market within a few years, making it a classic example of a tech fail.

Google Glass: A Visionary Flop

Google Glass was introduced in 2013 as a wearable tech product that would revolutionize how we interact with the world around us. The augmented reality (AR) glasses were meant to offer users hands-free access to information, from directions to notifications.

While the concept was innovative, Google Glass faced privacy concerns, design flaws, and social resistance. It failed to live up to the hype, and Google eventually halted consumer sales. Despite its initial failure, Google Glass has since succeeded in specialized industries like healthcare and manufacturing, where its potential is better realized.

Why Some Predictions Succeed, and Others Fail

Timing and Market Readiness

One key reason some tech predictions succeed while others fail is timing. When an innovation is introduced too early, the market may not be ready to adopt it. For example, Google Glass was a groundbreaking idea, but it was ahead of its time. The technology and societal acceptance simply weren’t there.

On the other hand, the smartphone succeeded because it arrived at the right moment. By the time smartphones were introduced, people were already comfortable with mobile devices, and the internet was becoming more accessible. The technology met an existing need, which contributed to its success.

Addressing a Real Problem

Another reason some innovations thrive is that they solve a real, pressing problem. Cloud computing and IoT, for example, provide practical solutions for businesses and consumers alike. Cloud computing allows companies to store vast amounts of data without investing in physical infrastructure, while IoT enables smarter, more efficient living environments.

In contrast, innovations like the Segway didn’t address a significant issue. While it was a neat concept, there was no overwhelming need for an alternative to cars or bikes in most urban areas, which limited its adoption.

Consumer Experience and Affordability

The user experience and cost also play significant roles in the success or failure of tech predictions. Products that are intuitive and affordable are more likely to succeed. For instance, smartphones quickly became user-friendly and affordable to a broad audience, contributing to widespread adoption.

In contrast, 3D TVs were expensive, and their experience wasn’t compelling enough to justify the cost. The need to wear glasses and the limited availability of 3D content further diminished consumer interest, leading to its failure in the market.

Unexpected Tech Success Stories

The Success of Social Media

Social media’s rise is an example of a tech surprise that exceeded predictions. While platforms like MySpace and Friendster hinted at the potential for online social networks, no one could have anticipated the global influence that Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter would achieve. Social media transformed how people communicate, and businesses operate, making it an essential tool for marketing, customer service, and personal connections.

Streaming Services Replacing Traditional Media

The rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ is another example of a tech win that wasn’t fully anticipated. Predictions about the future of media primarily focused on DVDs and cable television, but the rapid shift to on-demand streaming services surprised even industry insiders. The success of streaming platforms has reshaped the entertainment industry, pushing traditional media formats to the background.

The Unpredictable Nature of Tech Evolution

Technology will always be difficult to predict accurately because innovation is shaped by many factors—market demands, societal shifts, and unexpected breakthroughs. While some forecasts have successfully anticipated monumental changes like the rise of smartphones, cloud computing, and IoT, others have faltered, such as the Segway, 3D TVs, and Google Glass.

Ultimately, tech evolution is full of surprises. Innovations will continue to emerge, and while some predictions will hit the mark, others will inevitably miss. The journey through tech wins and fails teaches us that the future is never certain but always exciting.

By: Barr. Rita Asemota-Omoruyi

In the tapestry of African nations, women have long been an integral part of the social and economic fabric. Yet, despite their significant contributions, women often face systemic barriers that limit their potential. We must recognize and address these challenges to create a more equitable and prosperous future.

One such barrier is the lack of economic opportunities for women. Traditional gender roles and cultural norms have often relegated women to domestic responsibilities, limiting their access to education, employment, and financial resources. This economic marginalization perpetuates the cycle of poverty and inequality.
To break this cycle, it is essential to empower women economically. By providing them with access to education, training, and financial support, we can equip women to become self-sufficient and contribute to their communities.

Organizations like the AFRICAN WOMEN ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND POLITICAL EQUALITY COUNCIL (AWEJAPEC), founded by Barr. Rita Asemota-Omoruyi, are playing a crucial role in this regard.

Beyond economic empowerment, ensuring women’s political participation is equally important. Women’s voices and perspectives are essential for effective governance and decision-making. By increasing women’s representation in government, we can create policies that address women’s unique needs and challenges and promote gender equality.
Unfortunately, women often face political barriers, such as discrimination, harassment, and limited access to leadership positions. To overcome these challenges, we must advocate for policies that promote gender equality in politics and create a supportive environment for women to participate in the political process.

In conclusion, empowering women economically and politically is not only a moral imperative but also a practical necessity. By breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women, we can foster sustainable growth and development, reduce poverty, and build more inclusive and equitable societies in Africa. It is time to recognize the power of women and invest in their potential to create a brighter future for Africa.
