UNICEF’s Chief of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Nigeria, Dr. Jane Bevan, has disclosed that approximately 48 million Nigerians lack access to toilet and sanitation facilities, stressing the urgency for the government, agencies and private sector to commit to ending open defecation and improving sanitation standards across the country.

Speaking at a two-day Private Sector Consultation for Open Defecation Free (ODF) Nigeria in Lagos Thursday, Bevan expressed concern that Nigeria ranks among the worst countries globally for open defecation, which poses significant health risks.

She emphasised the critical need for the private sector to participate in setting up public toilets and enhancing sanitation efforts.

“Sanitation is crucial for Nigeria as it is tied to developmental goals. If we are to build one million toilets, it will require significant investment. The private sector can help by setting up public toilets and providing business loans to develop sanitation-related businesses,” Bevan said.

The Chief of UNICEF’s Lagos Field Office, Celine Lafoucriere, highlighted the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s sanitation crisis, estimating that 11 million new toilets are needed.

She called for the involvement of young entrepreneurs in building and installing toilets, helping to create jobs and promote sanitation as a business opportunity, even for the private sector, government and the population.

The Thematic Lead for WASH at the National Economic Summit Group (NESG), Nyanaso Gabriel Ekanem, emphasised the programme’s goal of uniting the private and public sectors to explore investment opportunities and ensure government support for sanitation policies and regulations.

Ekanem pointed out the potential for private investment in sanitation products and facilities, particularly in public spaces like parks and markets, where users could pay for clean and well-maintained amenities.

He further noted that NESG is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to identify investment opportunities, adding that: “It’s easy to carry out corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, but sustained investment is more challenging.”

The Director General of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Olusola Obadimu, highlighted the importance of improving hygiene standards in Nigeria.

He stated that poor sanitation, especially open defecation, negatively affects the country’s image and deters foreign investors.

Obadimu called for collective efforts from the private sector to eliminate this practice, adding that a cleaner environment is crucial for attracting investment.

“We should be proud when welcoming investors and visiting dignitaries,” he remarked.

“Open defecation is an eyesore and hampers our ability to present Nigeria as an attractive destination for business,” he said.

The Director General of the US Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Chinyere Alumona, underscored the significant health, social and economic consequences of open defecation, seeking immediate action.

She noted that over 48 million Nigerians still practise open defecation, leading to an annual economic loss of $1.5 billion due to health-related issues and reduced productivity.

Alumona highlighted the economic potential of investing in improved sanitation, citing studies that show a return of $5.50 for every $1 spent on sanitation improvements.

She called for a unified effort from the government, private sector and international organisations to tackle the crisis.

The Director of Water Quality, Sanitation and Hygiene at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation (FMWRS), Elizabeth Ugoh, gave an overview of the progress and challenges in achieving universal access to sanitation.

She said that while there has been progress, only 126 out of Nigeria’s 774 local governments have achieved ODF status.

She emphasised the need for greater investment, better infrastructure and stronger partnerships to close the gap, especially in rural areas.

She also mentioned the ministry’s efforts to create a new sanitation policy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urged the private sector to take a more active role in supporting these initiatives.

A group known as the Concerned Citizens’ Forum has criticized the Governing Council of the University of Abuja for allegedly attempting to recruit an unqualified professor as the new vice-chancellor following the expiration of Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah’s tenure on July 1, 2024.

According to the group, certain individuals are determined to undermine academic and recruitment standards and administrative competence at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) institution.

The group’s President, Ajiboye Bolanle, and General Secretary, Tunde Adams, who expressed concerns in a statement, noted that the plan is to appoint a candidate lacking the necessary qualifications.

“To achieve this unwholesome objective, merit seems to have been disregarded,” the statement said.

The university had earlier advertised the vice-chancellor position, specifying the required standard qualifications, which clearly indicated that unqualified candidates should not apply.

A copy of the advertisement, published in the Daily Trust newspaper on March 15 and obtained by THISDAY, outlined that under the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1993 (as amended), candidates must be professors with at least five years of experience in a recognised university. Candidates were also required to demonstrate academic leadership, administrative capabilities, and a record of high-level academic productivity in reputable journals such as those defined by Thompson Reuters ISI, Web of Science, and other similar scholarly platforms.

However, after a new governing council was constituted, another advertisement was published on August 26 by the university with altered requirements. The new advertisement emphasised that candidates must be accomplished professors with a doctorate in one of the disciplines offered by the university, have a minimum of 10 years of active teaching and research experience, and show evidence of postgraduate supervision for at least five years, among other criteria.

The Concerned Citizens’ Forum claimed that the candidate being pushed forward does not meet these qualifications. The new advertisement appears to have lowered the standards to favour a specific individual hastily prepared for the role. They expressed concern that such actions could degrade the institution’s academic standing.

“By lowering the requirements for the vice-chancellor of a major institution located in the capital of the largest and most populous country in Africa, the university has become an object of ridicule,” the group stated.

They further argued that allowing such actions to take place in the FCT is unacceptable and damaging to the country’s reputation. They warned that appointing an unqualified candidate could demoralise staff and students and negatively impact the institution’s credibility.

The group condemned the move as an attempt to institutionalize mediocrity, calling it an affront to governance in the education sector. They urged the president to intervene and prevent the situation from escalating.

“There are many highly qualified and respected professors at the University of Abuja. Why lower the recruitment standards to accommodate a particular clique that will eventually harm the entire system? Aren’t we tired of the negative reputation the University of Abuja is becoming known for?” they questioned.

The group warned that if this injustice is allowed to proceed, it could set a dangerous precedent, encouraging other universities to appoint unqualified candidates based on nepotism, ethnic bias, and other unjust reasons.

“Institutionalising gross incompetence and mediocrity through improper recruitment of the Vice Chancellor should not be allowed. The position of Vice Chancellor in any federal university in Nigeria is not reserved for any specific tribe, gender, or group. It should be based on universally accepted qualifications that have been the standard over the years,” they stressed.

They stressed that the University of Abuja must not be subjected to lower standards or actions that would diminish its reputation among Nigerian academic institutions, calling for an end to the ongoing situation.

As schools resumed yesterday, for a new academic session, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, called on teachers in the state to enhance their teaching methods and embrace new tools in educational governance, such as Artificial Intelligence, AI, and coding, to better equip themselves for the future.

Alli-Balogun who made this call during his tour of schools in the state to monitor resumption, expressed satisfaction with some, but noted areas of concern in others.

According to him, “We observed impressive improvements in some schools, where rehabilitation work had been done, and new furniture was delivered.

“However, other schools had less favorable conditions, such as unclean environments. This shows there is still a need to encourage schools to maintain cleanliness, ensure regular attendance of students and teachers, and fulfill their responsibilities in a timely manner.”

He also highlighted a slight increase in student attendance compared to 2023, saying that his ministry is currently analysing the data for confirmation.

The commissioner advised students to focus on consistent learning and preparation. He particularly emphasized to SS 3 students the importance of reviewing past examination questions from the last five years, urging them to avoid the common practice of cramming two or three months before the WAEC exams.

“The strategy of last-minute cramming for WAEC needs to change. Students should start preparing earlier and take their studies more seriously,” he said.

Alli-Balogun also encouraged schools to strengthen their relationships with the local community, suggesting that schools identify key community members and build connections that could benefit both parties.

The commissioner further announced that the official list of students for JSS1 and SS1 will be released soon to align with the academic calendar saying that students who do not meet the required standards after taking entrance exams will not be accommodated.

“Those with passing grades will be integrated into available spaces,” he added.

In cases of overcrowding, he advised parents to consider private school options.

Stressing financial obligations, Alli-Balogun clarified the state’s stance on levies, explaining that every resident must fulfill their civic duties.

He stated: “If you live in Lagos, paying tax is a responsibility. While we’re not imposing a tax at the moment, the levy we are talking about is minimal; less than N600 which is a small contribution for residency.”

He also pointed out the importance of regular maintenance in schools to avoid larger, more costly problems in the future, stressing that timely repairs can prevent issues from escalating.

The commissioner highlighted the state’s efforts in supporting education, noting that Lagos State had paid up to two billion naira to WAEC, ensuring that all WAEC-related expenses, including exam registration and result collection, are free for students in Lagos State.

As schools prepare to commence the new academic session, experts in the education sector have called for proactive and forward-thinking strategies from school leaders to ensure success.

They said this during a webinar titled ‘Pathway for the Education Industry in the 2024/25 Academic Year’, which featured several recommendations.

Business Development Strategist Mr. Rotimi Eyitayo emphasised the importance of vision and adaptability, urging school owners to improve their market share and access essential resources such as land, labour, and technology.

He stressed that success hinges on a well-rounded system rather than just revenue from school fees.

Dr. Sam Obafemi, convener of the Business Study Group, highlighted the need for school associations to influence public office selections while advocating for education-focused politicians.

He stressed the need for standardization, community engagement, and effective public relations to make their voices heard.

Mrs. Funke Fowler-Amba, CEO of Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, spoke on the value of emotional intelligence and vulnerability in leadership. She encouraged the creation of an environment of trust and collaboration, emphasizing that educators should embrace continuous learning and open communication.

To succeed in challenging times, Amba urged school owners to provide easy access to reading/learning materials, encourage staff to write personal development plans, use collaborative tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, etc., as well as rotate team members to promote skills and cross-pollination.

Jemima Nartey, Founder/CEO of Happy Kids Schools, Accra, Ghana, advised school leaders to focus on innovative strategies and strong staff and student loyalty to maintain their school’s integrity amid challenges.

Nartey, who had been running her school for 31 years, highlighted the importance of effective advertising and a good salary scale to retain staff.

In her remarks, Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, CEO of Edumark Consult, noted that the webinar was prompted by concerns from school owners struggling with operational costs, teacher retention, and policy issues.

She expressed hope that the strategies discussed would help schools navigate these challenges effectively as they prepare for the upcoming academic year.

The Coalition of Stakeholders in Education (CSE), yesterday, appealed to the Nigerian government and the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse their recent decision to ban degree certificates from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.

The group, comprising lecturers, parents, and students from these countries, argued that hardworking students who earned their degrees through legitimate means should not be penalized for the misconduct of a few.

Briefing journalists in Lagos, Gabriel Kona, President of the Nigerian Lecturers in Benin, expressed concern over inconsistencies in the Minister of Education’s statements.

He pointed out that contrary to the minister’s claim, Benin Republic has eight public universities and 95 private universities accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, while Togo has more than three accredited universities.

This contradicts the Minister’s assertion that only three institutions in Togo and five in Benin are recognized, he observed.

Kona also explained that the three-year degree programs offered in Benin Republic and Togo are equivalent to the four-year bachelor programs in Nigeria, thanks to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which is used across Europe and applicable in Africa.

He added that Benin’s educational policy allows instruction in English, making the language of instruction a non-issue.

He further criticised the minister’s decision to retroactively invalidate these certificates, calling it unjust.

Kona queried: “Has the FME been misleading Nigerian students all these years? What happens to the money students paid for certificate evaluations? Why did the FME provide evaluations for these graduates over the past seven years?”

The president emphasised that addressing the ongoing crises in Africa’s educational system requires a comprehensive approach rather than retroactive measures. He urged the Nigerian government, as a leading nation in sub-Saharan Africa, to play a pivotal role in revolutionising education in the region.

He also called for collaboration between Nigeria, Benin, and Togo to address the issues collectively, noting that Nigerian students and their families are already distressed and confused by the situation.

“Studying abroad was never a crime until now. We need all parents, guardians, and concerned Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to appeal to our policymakers to find a more effective solution to the longstanding problems in the education sector,” Kona added.

Dr. Shittu Sanny, Director of IUB University in Benin Republic, also weighed in, noting that students from other African countries studying in Benin have had their degrees recognised after proper evaluation.

He urged the federal government to focus on identifying and penalising specific institutions involved in certificate racketeering rather than punishing all students and graduates.

Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE) yesterday called for consultations with relevant stakeholders and open dialogue on the formulation and implementation of education policies.

They made the appeal during a webinar titled: ‘Above 18/Below 18: The Pros and Cons of the New Directive by the Minister on the Education Landscape’. The group highlighted the urgent need to reassess age restrictions for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), cautioning the federal government about the potential long-term impacts on youths and society.

The Chief Executive Officer of Edumark Consult and Coordinator of CPE, Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, voiced her concerns over a recent directive from the Minister of Education that bars students under 18 from taking the WASSCE.

She criticised the directive for being hastily implemented, and stressed that significant educational decisions should involve thorough planning and consultation with educators.

According to her, “Such directive by the minister doesn’t show good thinking and major decisions that will affect the lives of people, especially their education, which is not  what should be taken overnight.

“There has to be a period of planning and government should involve educators before voicing out such a policy. You don’t toy with education or play politics with people’s lives.”

Also, Executive Director of Ladela Schools, Mrs. Angela Ajala, pointed out the lack of coordination between the government and the private sector, emphasising the need for clear operational guidelines and communication regarding the new policy.

On her own, Helen Essien, president of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), lamented the country’s struggles with policy implementation and the tendency to replicate foreign systems without proper adaptation. She warned that such policies could lead to increased numbers of out-of-school children and called for regulatory bodies to perform their duties effectively.

“Nigeria seems to copy what happens in other climes without doing it well,  such policy will further lead to more out-of-school children. The regulatory body should do their work,” she stated.

Dr. Bukola Dosumu, an educator and social advocate, urged educators to reconsider their roles and contributions to the country’s development, questioning whether current practices in schools are fostering positive growth.

Johnson Abbaly, the CEO of Achievers Consortium/Motivational Centre, expressed concern over the lack of data to address underlying problems and the potential negative effects of the policy, such as increased internet fraud and mass failure. He stated that education should prepare students for the workforce and help shape their values.

Graphic Designer, Brian Ebbi, criticised the policy’s implementation, noting that it leaves parents uncertain about how to manage their children’s time during the interim. He urged the government to allow for mental preparation and suggested that students should focus on developing their skills during this period.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of  Council at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Siyan Oyeweso, has expressed concerns over government policies that hinder the recruitment and retention of top talent in the university sector. He stated that these policies have created both entry and exit challenges, exacerbating staff shortages.

Oyeweso who said this at the inauguration of the committee for the university’s fourth strategic plan,  lamented that the shortage of staff has adversely affected the institution. He noted that many departments are now either empty or nearly so, despite efforts to address accreditation needs.

He emphasized the importance of recruiting the best candidates and avoiding narrow or irrelevant considerations in this process to maintain the university’s tradition of excellence.

He also stressed the need for staff development through proper mentoring, training, and preparation, with senior academic staff and university management playing crucial roles in these areas. Oyeweso pointed out that some of the university’s facilities are deteriorating.

“The university is no longer producing the clean water it once did, and its distribution system is inadequate, leading to multiple boreholes and wells that risk weakening the land and causing tremors.

“The university’s roads are aging and prone to flooding, with many needing urgent repairs. There is uncontrolled increase in motorcycle riders intended for neighborhood security, which has resulted in their ineffectiveness due to erratic driving and restricted routes.”

He called for an expansion of university facilities to accommodate rising student numbers, maintenance of existing structures, and the introduction of new programs across various faculties, saying,” newer and private universities are capitalizing on such developments to attract students and enhance their visibility.”

Oyeweso emphasised that the university’s strategic plan for 2025-2050 will focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. The plan aims to equip graduates to meet 21st-century challenges and promote a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and social responsibility, positioning the university as a leader in progress and excellence.

Chairperson of the Lagos Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN),Mrs. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, yesterday appealed to the  federal and state governments, as well as international organisations, to assist the Aiyetoro Makoko/Ilaje communities in Lagos,  by providing sanitary toilet facilities.

She made the call at the Cholera Sensitisation and Waterways Cleanup Awareness Drive, themed, ‘Engineering Clean Communities: Preventing Cholera Together#thechangebeginswithme#’,  in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources;  and WaterAid Nigeria.

Owolabi highlighted the serious issue of unhygienic waste disposal in the community and expressed the association’s plan to construct a proper toilet facility.

She emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in solving this problem and suggested that a bio-digester could be utilised to power the community.

“A community without toilets faces significant waste disposal challenges. We can work together to find solutions and use these facilities to improve the community.”

“She said.

She stressed that creating a clean environment starts with changing the community’s mindset and promoting proper hygiene.

To support this initiative, APWEN has established a 50-member sanitation task force, led by the Community Development Association (CDA) chairman, and provided them with the necessary tools for maintaining cleanliness.

Owolabi also highlighted the need for empowering local youth and ensuring the sustainability of hygiene practices.

“We have ambassadors to monitor and maintain hygiene standards. They have been given two weeks for initial cleanup efforts, and we will conduct inspections afterward. Additionally, they require approximately N350,000 to clean the contaminated waterways, which affect neighboring communities,” the chairperson stressed.

Addressing the importance of tackling the root of the contamination, Owolabi noted that cleaning the waterways is a challenging but essential task. Following the cleanup, the association plans to develop innovative solutions to transform the community from a state of vulnerability to one of empowerment.

Head of WaterAid’s Lagos Programme, Adebayo Alao, explained that his organisation has engaged with community leaders and CDA members to understand the issues they face, including access to clean water, sanitation, and the lack of toilet facilities. WaterAid plans to collaborate with engineering students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to design solutions for these challenges.

“The students will develop innovative concepts to address these issues. The resolution will come in due course,” he said.

The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) yesterday called for the implementation of policies that will drive sustainable economic growth amid widespread poverty, insecurity, corruption, and other challenges confronting the country.

The President and Chairman of the Board, Manason Rubainu, who made this call at the APBN board meeting hosted by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Lagos, pointed out that pervasive poverty and hunger are severely impacting industries and enterprises.

He stressed the need to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and invest in technology and education to create a resilient workforce.

Rubainu also emphasised the urgency of addressing violence, terrorism, and banditry, calling for comprehensive security reforms, enhanced training for security personnel, improved intelligence, and community-based initiatives.

In an interview with journalists, Rubainu underscored the importance of involving professionals in policy-making and implementation to better address public needs and restore confidence in governance.

Rubainu expressed concern about the negative influence of politicians on professionals and stressed the need for accountability from those in positions of power.

According to him, “This is why we need to demand accountability from the people who hold the instrument of the establishment .By addressing these issues head-on and leveraging the collective expertise within our association, we can recommend actionable, evidence-based solutions that will contribute to the development of our country. If we must account for quality, then the politicians must take professionals more seriously.”

In her remarks, President of NSE, Margaret Aina Oguntala, echoed the importance of professional engagement with the government and policymakers to shape supportive policies. She advocated the forming of a coalition within the APBN to amplify their voice and push for necessary reforms.

The president emphasised that addressing complex national challenges requires collaboration across various professions, and by working together, remarkable outcomes can be achieved.

She also called for programmes that support and develop young professionals, ensuring they acquire the skills and networks needed for future success.

“By investing in our youths, we are securing the future of our professions and our country,” the president stated.

Education specialist at UNICEF’s Abuja Office, Azuka Menkiti, yesterday, appealed to education stakeholders to ensure adequate funding, particularly for secondary education, and to develop reliable data to advocate for support from state governors and donor agencies.

Menkiti made this call at a two-day regional stakeholders’ meeting focusing on out-of-school children, as well as retention, transition, and completion models for South West states, held at Kankanfo Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking with journalists, she emphasised the need for states to leverage community and religious leaders to address social norms that prevent children from attending school.

She highlighted that both direct and indirect factors hinder the demand for secondary education and stressed the importance of scaling up foundational literacy and numeracy programmes.

“This would ensure that children entering school are prepared to learn, supported by systems that foster a conducive learning environment,” she stated

Menkiti noted that the program aims to help states develop effective models to enhance retention, transition, and completion rates in secondary education. This initiative builds on a decade-long intervention focused on girls’ education, which has successfully increased school attendance for girls.

Her words: “Out-of-school children include those who have never enrolled, those unlikely to enroll, and those who have dropped out. UNICEF is particularly concerned with those at risk of dropping out, especially in southwest states with high school attendance rates.”

The education specialist emphasised the importance of addressing retention, transition, and completion issues for adolescents aged 10 to 18 years. She added that commissioners, SUBEB chairmen, and permanent secretaries from the southwest would review the models to determine their suitability for their respective states.

“UNICEF aims to strengthen educational systems, expand access, and improve quality learning opportunities for adolescents,” Menkiti said, adding that there is need for credible evidence to advocate support and encourage states develop plans and policies that will support children’s education.

Babagana Aminu, another education specialist for UNICEF, highlighted a troubling statistic from a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), indicating that nearly 80 per cent of children in the six southwest states of Nigeria are out of school.

This issue, he noted, is tied to challenges in retention, transition, and completion rates, observing that, “Specifically, the data reveals that while 92% of children complete primary school, only 85% make it to upper secondary education, suggesting a significant drop-off.”

Aminu emphasised the need for government and education stakeholders to focus on improving foundational literacy, numeracy, and transferable skills to better prepare children for the modern world.

Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Saliu Adelabu, expressed concerns about the influx of young children into the state. He mentioned that the Ministry of the Environment is working on integrating them into schools or vocational training.

Hamzat Omolaja, Director of Social Mobilization at Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB), expressed optimism about the meeting’s impact on addressing out-of-school children.

He highlighted the board’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to education through initiatives like ‘Leave No Child Behind’ and ‘Project 0’, which aims for zero tolerance of out-of-school children.

Simon Page College of Marketing has graduated 43 professionals who completed their qualifications in Marketing (CIM UK), Digital Marketing (DMI Ireland), and Project Management (PMI US).

The ceremony, themed, ‘Orchestrating Success in a Dynamic World’,  was held to honour the students’ achievements and inspire them to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead.

It was chaired by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UAC Foods Limited, Oluyemi Oloyede, and Head of Marketing, Lafarge Africa, Oluyomi Moses, the special guest of honour.

Speaking at the second graduation ceremony for the class of 2023 in Lagos, the founder and CEO of Simon Page College of Marketing, Dr. Princewill Omorogiuwa explained that the college has been in existence for 16 years: 14 years in Nigeria and nine years in Kenya, and the ceremony was to celebrate the resilience and journey of the college in making remarkable contributions in the world of marketing, digital marketing, project management and more.

“Simon Page College of Marketing has equipped the graduates with the knowledge and skills they ultimately need to adapt to change or lead the change required in their respective organisations. You have learned how to anticipate the market, leverage data for strategic decisions and also how to create a compelling narrative that resonates with a very diverse audience,” he stated.

He appealed to the graduating class not to take for granted the knowledge and skills they had acquired from the college but to carry its legacy and orchestrate the desired success in the dynamic world in which they find themselves.

In his paper titled, ‘A Pillar of Success called Optimism’, Oloyede said optimism is key to inspiring organisations to stay competitive in the face of the distressing condition of the economy.

He stated that business leaders, business managers and brand managers need to breathe the spirit of optimism into their various brands. He argued that there is no doubt that the Nigerian economy and organisations are distressed. However, it is the choice of managers to breathe into such organisations with the level of optimism that the brand needs to survive.

“Nothing great has ever been achieved in pessimism. You can never build a fantastic business, a big brand or a legacy that transcends time without the spirit of optimism. You have to believe it  is possible for you to be successful,” Oloyede said.

Oluyomi Moses, Head of Marketing, Lafarge Africa, said that success is not mysterious, not a coincidence, not sudden, but can be planned, organised, and orchestrated.

Speaking on the theme of the ceremony, Oluyomi explained that despite the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world that we live in, it is still possible to be successful as there are instances of people who defied the challenges to achieve highly coveted outcomes in their various disciplines of life.

According to her, most of the successful people we see today broke through barriers, obstacles, rejections, disappointments, and adversities at some point in their journey to be able to succeed.

Oluyomi said that some of the trends found among successful people across different geographies and social and economic contexts are that they have vision, reorient themselves, are hardworking, and are resilient.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to Foluke Makinde as overall best student (postgraduate diploma in professional marketing), Funmilola Oyewole as overall best student (diploma in professional marketing) and other outstanding students in the diploma in professional marketing and diploma in professional digital marketing qualifications, and postgraduate diploma in professional marketing qualifications, among others.

MAMI, Experts Initiate Agenda for Disability-Inclusive Social Protection https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/08/14/mami-experts-initiate-agenda-for-disability-inclusive-social-protection/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/08/14/mami-experts-initiate-agenda-for-disability-inclusive-social-protection/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1003564

The Media Action for Minority Inclusion (MAMI), a disability and policy foundation, recently brought together experts in disability and social protection for a roundtable themed ‘Living Cost Crisis: PWDs Survival in Administration Proclaiming Equal Opportunities’.

The programme developed five action plans that addressed poor targeting excluding disability from social protection policies.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Adviser on Disability and Equality to the Presidency, Abba Issa Mohammed, emphasised on  leadership failure, saying that since the Discrimination Act 2018 took effect, the government has doubled down on positioning disability in Nigeria, Africa, and as far as the UN.

“If anything, we don’t need to blame the government; we need to blame ourselves, and hold our people (PWDs) in leadership positions responsible.”

The programme featured a panel session where panelists disagreed with Mohammed.

In his presentation, Theophilus Adawodu, Project Manager at the Disability Rights Fund, described the projections as ‘tokenistic’.  Whether social protection policies work for the disability community or not, he insisted that the buck still stops with the government.

“I think the government needs to be more intentional; its political will needs to be well demonstrated to ensure PWDs enjoy whatever good intention the government has.”

He cited Ghana among other countries where social protection policies specifically provide 25 per cent of a PWD’s salary as an allowance.

“Now here the cost of living is high even for those without disabilities. Imagine that for PWDs who have to pay double or three times that amount to access public services,” he stated.

He noted that the world is now shifting to a care economy for disability, and observed how much good data collection can help Nigeria in planning for this shift.

In his paper on ‘the State of Disability in Social Protection Policy Formulation and Implementation’, Lukman Salami, a lawyer and Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons With Disability (JONAPWD), Lagos State chapter, said disability for now, has not earned its place in most of the policies, despite the government’s claim of inclusion.

He wondered how disability can ever feature when PWDs and experts in disability have no part in the policy cycle.

A World Bank Technical Assistant to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, who was among the drafters of the National Social Protection Policy in 2014, Adebukola Adebayo insisted the problem is that of governance structure of Nigeria’s disability space; not so much of lack of disability-specific policies.

According to him, social protection policies abound in social care, social insurance, social assistance, and labour market intervention for vulnerable Nigerians.

“But the truth is we cannot implement social protection policies when we don’t have an appropriate governance system in place to drive all of this,” the social protection policy expert said, referring to the competition and duplication of efforts among MDAs implementing disability policies.

“At what point do we engage with the SSA and at what point do we engage with the NCPWD, and at what point do both of them come  together to advance disability issues in Nigeria?”

For its effort in targeting disability, the World Bank, Adebayo said, has been working with the NCPWD to unbundle the Discrimination Act 2018 into implementable policies. He also suggested setting up of interagency collaborative mechanisms to ‘drive, implement, and monitor’ disability inclusion in social protection policies.

The Convener, Gbenga Ogundare, Executive Director of MAMI, assured the panelists the foundation will make the report of the deliberation available to relevant institutions and agencies for further policy action.
