Traders at the new Benin market on Saturday defied the restriction of movement order by the police to engage in a brisk business on the day of the Edo governorship election.
As at 7 a.m., traders have set their makeshift stalls, selling goods along the main thoroughfare despite official warnings to maintain order for the electoral process.
Despite a police presence along the roads to the market, which is aimed at enforcing the movement restrictions, the marketplace in Benin was bustling with activity as residents stopped for last-minute purchases.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mrs Grace Omonuwa said she was in the market to earn for her daily feeds.
“Elections may be important, but so is our livelihood,” Omonuwa, a vegetable vendor said.
Similarly, Mrs Ngozi Eze, said she was in the market to pick up some items before going to the poll.
“I need to buy some food before I go vote,” she softly said while navigating the busy market.
The police had, during a news briefing on Friday, said restriction of movement would last between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the election day. (NAN)

*Allow peace, civility to reign, Tinubu tells stakeholders

The 2,249,780 voters in Edo State that have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) out of the 2,590,603 registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would today go to their respective polling units to decide who wins the coveted seat out of the 17 governorship candidates of the contesting political parties.
The three leading candidates are Asue Ighodalo of the governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olumide Akpata of Labour Party (LP), and Monday Okpebholo of All Progressives Congress (APC).

This was as Akpata, yesterday, debunked the rumour making the rounds that he has stepped down from the governorship race.
Likewise, the APC described the purported magistrate court ruling disqualifying its candidate, Okpebholo, as false.
As tension reached boiling point over the election, President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, called on all stakeholders in the governorship election to conduct themselves peacefully and sportingly.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo State, Dr. Asugbom Onuoha yesterday, said being a cousin to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, does not preclude him from being appointed as an official of INEC.
Also yesterday, the Nigeria Police Force ordered restriction of all vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., in readiness for the off-cycle election in Edo State.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), yesterday said troops’ presence in Edo State ahead of the off-cycle election was to thwart the activities of those elements bent on perpetrating crisis during the elections.

A breakdown of the total number of registered voters by INEC showed that Edo South, with a total number of registered voters at 1,526,717 or 59 per cent, could be the battleground and may end up deciding who wins the election. Also, Edo North has a total of 620,412 (24 per cent) registered voters while Edo Central has a total of 443,474 (17 per cent) registered voters.
The figures obtained from INEC on the three senatorial districts also showed that Edo South, Ikpoba Okha LGA has the highest voting population with 400,495 registered voters; Oredo LGA has a total of 357,371 registered voters; Egor – 242,226 registered voters; Ovia North East – 177,106 registered voters; Orhionmwon – 140, 670; Ovia South West with a total of 113,924 registered voters and Uhunmwonde with 94,925 registered voters.

On the other hand, Edo North has the second largest voting population with the Estako West having 133,067 registered voters; Akoko-Edo with 144,379 voters; Owan East with 106, 796 voters. Others are Etsako East with 102,454 voters, Owan West with 73,732 and Etsako Central 59,984 voters respectively.
Edo Central Senatorial District, where the APC and PDP candidates hail from has the least voting population with Esan West having the highest voting population in the district with 133,067 voters; Esan North East with 102,280 voters and  Esan South East with 90,240 voters. Others are Esan Central with the 63,338 voting population and finally, Igueben LGA with the least voting population of 54,549 registered voters.

In the meantime, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has set up Situation Room to monitor the election.
A statement signed by the State Chairman of the Union, Festus Alenkhe, called on journalists and members of the general public to also hook up on the union’s Facebook page (EDO NUJ) and other channels that will be used during the election.
The statement added that NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, would preside over the situation room activities.

Tinubu to Edo Stakeholders: Allow Peace, Civility to Reign

President Bola Tinubu yesterday, called on all stakeholders in the Edo State governorship elections to conduct themselves peacefully and sportingly.
The President, in a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, implored the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will.
He expressed belief in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders.

Tinubu emphasised that democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game.
He noted that INEC has committed to conducting a free and fair election and urges all stakeholders to work together to ensure a successful and peaceful process.
The President commended the governorship candidates and political parties for their campaigns, which have focused on issues that matter most to the people of Edo State, including improving livelihoods, promoting economic growth, and contributing to national development.

He urged all citizens in the state to remain peaceful and respectful throughout the voting process while also encouraging them to resolve any disagreements amicably through the constituted authorities.
In addition, Tinubu expressed unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and INEC officials and urged them to remain impartial and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

Police Order Restriction of Vehicular Movement

The Nigeria Police Force yesterday ordered restriction of all vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m, in readiness for the off-cycle election in Edo State.
The police also ordered the full implementation of a ban on all security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling booths and collation centres, as part of effort to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
A statement by Force PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also announced comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process during the upcoming Edo off-cycle election scheduled for today, Saturday, September 21, 2024.

According to him, “Unauthorised security personnel and quasi-security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election, and the use of sirens by unauthorised vehicles is strictly forbidden to ensure a calm environment for voters.”
Adejobi, however, noted that exceptions would be made for essential services, including accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders on election day.
The IGP also mandated police personnel on election duties to accord special attention to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, aged, and those with mobility challenges to ensure that polling stations in both urban and rural settings are accessible to all.

The Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Edo Gubernatorial Election, Frank Mba, appealed to citizens to refrain from making prank calls to control room and designated help numbers, highlighting that text messages are more effective for operational purposes.
He noted that the already activated joint control room is manned by police and relevant agencies engaged in the electoral process.
Citizens, he said are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or incidents that may jeopardise the integrity of the electoral process or cause disorderliness in any part of the state.
The Inspector General of Police underscored the necessity of adhering to these directives to avert any undue interference and intimidation during the election.

“Political parties, candidates, and their supporters are urged to conduct themselves responsibly and in compliance with electoral laws, as any violations or attempts to disrupt the electoral process will be met with the full extent of the law.”
Reaffirming the dedication of the Nigeria Police Force to promote a safe and democratic environment, the IGP said through collaborative efforts the police can guarantee that the forthcoming elections in Edo would be held fairly and peacefully.

I’m Still in the Race, Olumide Akpata Declares

Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Olumide Akpata, yesterday, debunked the rumour making the rounds that he has stepped down from the race.
Addressing journalists in Benin City, Akpata said “I remain steadfast in the race.”
Early yesterday, the social media went viral with a statement purportedly written by Akpata, saying he has stepped down for the candidate of the PDP

He said: “I have been inundated with a flood of calls and messages from friends and supporters, which constrains me from releasing this statement to dispel the wicked rumour circulating that I have decided to step down and support the PDP candidate in today’s governorship election. This falsehood is illustrative  of the evil machinations of those who have held our state down for a quarter of century and demonstrates the shallowness that has characterised their governance style.”

Akpata also said, “Let me be unequivocally clear: I am still in the race. The notion that I would step down on the eve of the election, after the overwhelming support received from the good people of our state, borders of delusion. This pathetic attempt at deception is so amateurish that the ‘Oluwole’ forger could not even get the date right, leaving July 29, 2024 on their fraudulent document. Such incompetence would be laughable if it were not so sinister in its intent.”
The LP candidate who noted that the desperate tactics of the perpetrators of the fraud had exposed their fear, pointing out that if they claim he is a mere spoiler, why did they resort to such underhanded method, an action that has betrayed their panic at this unstoppable momentum.

Also, the Labour Party refuted widespread rumors suggesting that Akpata had withdrawn from the race.
In a statement released late yesterday, Labour Party labeled the reports that its candidate, Olumide Akpata had withdrawn as false and part of a deliberate campaign of misinformation designed to confuse voters and undermine Akpata’s candidacy.
The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to the electoral process, emphasising that Akpata is firmly in the race and remains focused on delivering positive change to Edo State. The statement reassured voters that the party and its candidate are determined to see through their vision of good governance and a brighter future for the state.

APC: Purported Court Ruling Against  Okpebholo False

The APC described the purported magistrate court ruling disqualifying its candidate, Okpebholo as false.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka in a statement issued yesterday, said the fake news was meant to sow seeds of doubt about the APC candidate.
He described the purported court ruling as  a blatant and calculated attempt to subvert the will of the Edo electorate, saying it must be thoroughly rejected by the good and discerning people of Edo State.

Morka said: “In the final hours of the Edo State Gubernatorial Election scheduled to be held tomorrow Saturday, September 21, 2024, certain political parties  have desperately resorted to forgery, disinformation and blackmail by circulating a fake Magistrate court ruling purportedly disqualifying Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC Gubernatorial Candidate in the election.
“The circulated ruling is fake, a fabrication and an act of pure desperation in the face of their imminent defeat at the polls.
“The Magistrate Court that purportedly issued the “fake ruling” has issued a disclaimer stating categorically that the “fake ruling” did not emanate from that court.

“The fake news meant to sow seeds of doubt about the APC candidate is a blatant and calculated attempt to subvert the will of the Edo electorate and must be thoroughly rejected by the good and discerning people of Edo State.
“This illegal and underhand tactic of the parties involved constitutes a despicable attack on our electoral democracy. We call on our law enforcement agencies to identify, investigate and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice.
“We urge voters in Edo State to remain vigilant and resolute in the exercise of their democratic rights at tomorrow’s polls. We trust that the  Edo people will reject this and other illegal devices by desperate candidates and their parties to subvert this important election.
“Senator Monday Okpebholo is, and remains, the standard bearer of the APC in tomorrow’s Edo State Gubernatorial Election.”

DHQ: Our Presence in Edo to Thwart Activities of Subversive Elements

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), yesterday said that Troops’ presence in Edo ahead of the election was to thwart the activities of those elements bent on perpetrating crisis during the elections. The DHQ also noted that troops were strategically deployed to ensure that the election was violence-free, fair and credible.
A statement by Director Defence Media Operation, Maj Gen Edward Buba, said troops’ role was to support the police to ensure voters’ safety and security.

Edo REC: Being Wike’s Cousin Doesn’t Disqualify Me from serving as INEC official

The REC in Edo State, Dr.Asugbom Onuoha, yesterday said being a cousin to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), does not preclude him from being appointed as an official of INEC.

Recently, Tony Aziegbemi, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo had asked INEC to redeploy Onuoha over ties with Wike.

Aziegbemi, had expressed a lack of confidence in the REC’s ability to conduct a free and fair election in the state.

Onuoha had served as Special Adviser on Lands when Wike was the governor of Rivers State.

Reacting to the PDP’s request, INEC had said Onuoha would not be redeployed and that the focus should be on the voting process.

However, speaking in an interview with Channels Television yesterday, Onuoha asked Nigerians to focus on his competency, character, and conscience, and ignore his relationship with Wike.

The Edo REC said politicians will make “wild allegations when they discover that you will not do their bidding”, adding that there were no complaints when he was posted to Edo state in 2023.

“It is a fact that I am a cousin to the minister. On my appointment, I was invited by the senate. The senate screened and confirmed me. I was sworn in by my chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu,” he said.

“I was posted to Edo last year. Nobody complained that I’m a cousin to the minister. Of course, I’m a cousin to the minister. What we should be talking about at this time is capacity. Do you have the capacity to conduct the election? Are you competent enough?

“From my background, I am an Associate Professor of Law. People should ask, ‘can he do this job? Has he done a similar thing before?’ Yes, I was an Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State’s RSIEC. Nobody complained.

“I’m coming from the university. The mere fact that I’m a cousin to Wike does not preclude me from being appointed. Am I not a Nigerian? What Nigerians should be after is the person’s competence and whether he has what it takes to handle the job.  Those are the issues they should ask.”

Meanwhile, Citizens Gavel, a non-governmental organisation has called on the President of the Court of Appeal, Monica Dongban- Mensem to establish and publicise structured criteria and prohibit conflicted appointments.

Also, it recommended that the Chief Justice of the Federation, Kudirat Kekere- Ekun establish a monitoring system to oversee the election petition tribunals and ensure that the processes are transparent and accountable.

Hide original message

In a statement from its communications associate, Charles Akintola, the NGO said this became expedient as such would include specific provisions within the criteria that explicitly prohibit the appointment.

He also noted that the measure was crucial to maintaining the impartiality and fairness of the judiciary and criteria must stipulate that all appointed judges are individuals of high integrity and are free from any corruption charges as well as ties to politicians/political parties.

He said “As we approach the upcoming governorship elections in Edo State on 21st September 2024 and Ondo State on 16th November 2024, we recognise the critical responsibility of the judiciary in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

“We recommend that the Chief Justice establish a monitoring system to oversee the election petition tribunals, ensuring that the processes are transparent and accountable.”

NNPC in Talks With Investors for Revival of $30bn Brass, Olokola LNG Projects    https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/nnpc-in-talks-with-investors-for-revival-of-30bn-brass-olokola-lng-projects/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/nnpc-in-talks-with-investors-for-revival-of-30bn-brass-olokola-lng-projects/#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2024 15:52:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014094

Peter Uzoho

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has resumed discussions with investors towards bringing back to development two long-abandoned Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects — Brass and Olokola LNG projects — with a total cost of $29.8 billion.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of NNPCL, Mr. Umar Ajiya, disclosed this at the ongoing 2024 Gas Technology Conference and Exhibition (Gastech) in Houston, United States.

The Olokola gas project sited in Ogun State, valued at $9.8 billion, and the Brass LNG plant in Bayelsa State, estimated at $20 billion are positioned among the largest gas infrastructure investments in Nigeria.

According to the NNPCL, both projects, which were anticipated to boost Nigeria’s gas capacity by over 22 million tonnes per annum, have faced decades of delays due to “unfavourable market dynamics and slow decision-making by the political class in the past”.

“In the past, gas prices went down, the economics of the projects meant a high Capital Expenditure (CAPEX), and this was a dis-incentive for investors and partners. Also, there was slow decision-making by the political class,” Ajiya stated.

The $20 billion Brass LNG project in Bayelsa State and the Olokola gas project were expected to create thousands of new jobs, spur domestic gas demand, boost electricity generation, and create opportunity to diversify Federal Government’s revenue generation.

The Brass project, which was initiated under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, was also projected to help the country monetise part of its vast natural gas reserves and meet the growing worldwide demand for clean energy.

However, the project has been stalled by lack of Final Investment Decision (FID), as well as delays caused by unnecessary bickering and lack of political will.

While describing NNPCL as a commercially driven company, which recognises timely project development and execution, the CFO said there are abundant gas resources in many parts of the world and therefore, the earlier Nigeria makes smart decisions to bring partners to the table the better.

In addition, Ajiya commended President Bola Tinubu for his support in driving new projects in the industry through the Presidential Executive Orders on Oil & Gas Reforms.

“We are also happy to have the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 (PIA) which has provided fiscal incentives for investors and is creating the enabling environment that has rekindled hope in the energy sector,” he said.

Economic Hardship: Have Faith in Tinubu’s Competence, Diaspora Expert, Balogun Tells Nigerians https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/economic-hardship-have-faith-in-tinubus-competence-diaspora-expert-balogun-tells-nigerians/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/economic-hardship-have-faith-in-tinubus-competence-diaspora-expert-balogun-tells-nigerians/#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2024 13:27:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014085

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian accountant and investment expert, Ms Patricia Adenike Balogun, has urged Nigerians to have faith and confidence in the capacity of President Bola Tinubu to turn around the economic fortune of Nigeria.

According to her, the president is well endowed with all accounting and management tools, including the right leadership qualities to transform the Nigerian economy to a prosperous one.

Speaking from London in a Zoom interview with Nigerian journalists in Abuja, Balogun said accountants are the best set of professionals that can lead a country out of recession and during the time of prosperity because they are visionaries, innovative and risk takers.

Balogun, an accountant herself, also expressed confidence that the president could leverage on his background in the profession to task his professional colleagues on planning policies capable of reviving several sectors of the Nigerian economy made comatose by the harsh situation bedevilling the country.

She, additionally, asked that government should reduce the tax burden on small businesses in order to help them navigate and survive the current economic challenges.

Balogun regarded as an advantage the background of the president as a former accountant with Mobil Oil Producing and other establishments.

She said: “Accountants like President Tinubu are best to lead a country out of a recession. They are visionary, innovative and risk-takers.

“Although traditionally viewed as professionals who focus on numbers and data, their role is more dynamic. He has been trained with the capacity to drive growth and embrace innovation. Their analytical skills as accountants give them the capacity for data-based decision-making.”

She credited the accounting profession with facilitating the development of trail-blazing IT software currently driving innovations such as the Treasury Single Account (TSA) embraced by the Nigerian government, as well as FinTech and e-commerce platforms.

On the TSA, she said: “The accountants within the public sector put ideas together, and came up with that Treasury Single Account system to help ensure better transparency and accountability in the area of the management of funds within the country, as well as to curb corruption.”

According to her, the nation should not underrate the advantages that accountants and the accounting profession can bring to bear on the nation’s search for socio-economic solutions.

Balogun said: “Accountants have the capacity to drive growth and we are innovative. The analytical skills of accountants that make them excel in analysing data are very crucial in a time of economic uncertainty because we use the data we analyse to back the decisions we make. We have the risk assessment method of finding financial risks, along with different scenarios, to produce healthy outcomes. We have very good capacity in strategic planning.

“We know how to use multiple scenarios and models to differentiate which features will facilitate planning for risk-mitigation. We are very good at problem solving. When you have financial challenges, if you bring an accountant, they are able to use their skills to basically adapt and find changing landscapes in implementing different corrective measures in terms of the time of economic action.

“In terms of being leaders, we create, we use data, we analyse data, and we are able to use them to bring financial health back to a business, to an organisation or to the country at large.”

Balogun recalled that accountants had been drivers behind the adoption of the Financial Reporting Standard (FRS) that has enhanced transparency and accountability within companies and within the country generally.

According to her, “During the privatisation policies of the 1990s and early 2000s, the accountants put together measures to help in ensuring that business outcomes were achieved.

“In the agricultural sector too, the nation should not underrate the advantages that accountants and the accounting profession can bring to bear on the nation’s search for socio-economic solutions.

“Accountants have the capacity to drive growth, and we are innovative.

FG Threatens to Seal Defaulting Organisation Defrauding Consumers https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/fg-threatens-to-seal-defaulting-organisation-defrauding-consumers/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/fg-threatens-to-seal-defaulting-organisation-defrauding-consumers/#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2024 13:01:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014069

Oluchi Chibuzor

The federal government through the Department of Weights and Measures, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), has threatened to seal organisations found defrauding consumers through weights and instruments in trade transactions across the country.

The warning is coming in view of escalating cost of goods and services across the country while ensuring that Nigerians get the value for their money.

Speaking at an annual audit inspection across some selected companies in Lagos, the Director, Weights and Measures, FMITI, Dr. Olajide Adesuyi, stressed that the current administration is working to ensure that consumers are not exploited.

The fellow of the security institute stressed that with the escalating cost of goods in the country, the government is concerned about the consumers and wants to make sure that they get value for their money.

According to him, “With the escalating cost of materials and products the government wants to make sure that if you are buying 10 liters in a particular place, that money you are paying should be commensurate with what you are getting from that place. So when we find any defaulting organisation we seal immediately. Yes, we seal immediately and then we make sure that they comply.”

“And I want you to understand the fact that annual surveillance of Weight and Measures is extremely critical to maintaining accuracy and consistency in trade activities, Industrial and scientific applications. So, under this, the government is concerned about the protection of the consumers.

“So that nobody short-changes the consumers. What you are getting from a particular station is what you are getting from another place. If you go to any market to buy 50 kg rice, you are sure that what you are going to meet there is that 50 kg. So, the government does not want to hear that a particular sector is trying to cheat the consumer. And you know it will definitely bounce back on the government. That is the new agenda of Mr. President now. Get value for your money.”

He, however, after noted the need for accuracy of trade transactions was behind the current administration drive to ensure consumers are not cheated.

“So that everybody will get exactly what they pay for. And that is the motivation for the government recently. And that is why they take our certificate, because we go there every time, unannounced, to check what they are doing. And to make sure that they comply with whatever regulation we have,” he stated.

Giving her assessment after visiting NNPC filling station in Ijora, and Olam Agri warehouse in Orile Iganmu, the Lagos Zonal Coordinator, Weights and Measures, FMITI, Nwachukwu Cordelia, warned that the department would not hesitate to sanction any organisation.

According to her, “We want to be on our people because Nigerians are going through alot. They know what Weight and Measures can do. Anywhere you see people using instruments, equipment, for transactions, we are there. So, one of the reasons for our inspection today is to make sure that the pumps and scale that these organisations are  using are accurate.”

Lekki Coastal Zone: Indigenes Demand Immediate Distribution of Resettlement Lands https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/lekki-coastal-zone-indigenes-demand-immediate-distribution-of-resettlement-lands/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/lekki-coastal-zone-indigenes-demand-immediate-distribution-of-resettlement-lands/#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2024 12:51:06 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014065

Concerned indigenes of affected villages and communities within the Lekki Coastal Zone at Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos State have demanded from the state government the immediate distribution of their allocated lands for resettlement.

Mr Oluwaremilekun Lasisi, leader of the group, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, made the request on behalf of the 12 affected communities.

NAN reports that the 12 affected communities are: Okunraiye, Olomowewe, Idotun, Alasia, Itonke,Tiye, Idasho, Ilege, Lekuru, Magbon Segun, Oke Segun, and Imobido.

The Lekki Free Zone, also called Export Processing Zone, is the most popular free zone in Nigeria and one of the fastest growing free zones in the world, according to a report by the World Bank.

It is managed and controlled by Nigerian Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA) for all the general-purpose export free zones and the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority (OGFZA), dedicated for the oil and gas trade.

The free economic zone is established as an international city with multi-functions of industry, commerce, trade, tourism, recreation and residence to attract foreign investment, create employment and expedite economic growth.

The Lagos state government allocated hectares of land for the project with an equity share in return of 50-year right to operate the zone to all partners.

These partners include: The Chinese Consortium, Tolaram, Rendevour and Dangote Refinery.

In his explanation, Lasisi told NAN that during the tenure of President Bola Tinubu as governor of Lagos state, the state acquired 7,500 hectares of lands from the 12 villages and communities for the project.

He said, having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government, the state allocated 750 hectares of lands elsewhere for resettlement to the affected communities, representing 10 per cent of their acquired lands.

According to him, former Gov. Babatunde Fashola, during his tenure in 2014, issued the Certificate of Occupancy of the resettled lands to the affected communities, but they have yet to take possession since then.

The community leader expressed disappointment that the Lekki Coastal Resettlement Committee constituted by the state government with nominations from the various communities at several times to steer the land distribution had since betrayed them without achieving any milestone.

According to him, the resettlement committee have been allegedly engaged in unauthorised sale of a large track of the unencumbered land said to be within their custody without the knowledge of the affected villages and communities.

”I commend the state government and the House of Assembly for their intervention during the tenure of former Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and now Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and for dissolving the resettlement committees at various times.”

He said Gov. Sanwo-Olu dissolved the last resettlement committee led by Mr Wasiu Ayeola, following the expiration of the committee’s tenure in June.

Lasisi, however, expressed dismay that another body named Lekki Coastal Development Association headed by the same Ayeola had been formed without due nomination or consultation from the affected communities.

“We cannot comprehend why the governor will dissolve the resettlement committee headed by Ayeola and now give recognition to another formed association with a different nomenclature, but led by the same Ayeola.

“We demand that all actions taken now or in the future by Ayeola led team or in the name of Lekki Coastal Development Association be declared null and void, and of no effect because it is not in the interest of the affected communities.

“We also appeal to the government to reconstitute the Lekki Coastal Resettlement Committee following the submission of names of newly elected representatives, after the conduct of a credible election by the relevant authorities.

“We demand that the affected villages and communities should be given the opportunity to renew the mandate of their current representative where they desire or to elect a new set of representatives to represent their interest,” he said.

Lasisi appealed to the House Committees on Land matters, and Commerce as well as the governor to immediately revoke the issuance of any consent over the sale of any part of the land given to the villages and communities.

He also called on the government to give express order on the release and distribution of the allocated lands to the affected villages and communities with immediate effect, to avoid breakdown of law and order in the zone.

According to him, some aggrieved indigenes embarked on a peaceful protest around the zone on Sept. 12 to drive home their demands.

Lasisi said that the affected villages and communities have unanimously nominated Mr Sanni Olatunji as their new representative on the Board of Director of Lekki Worldwide Ltd., to replace their current representative, Mr Olu Falade, now deceased.

“In line with the provisions of clause of the MOU with the state government, Ibeju – Lekki LGA, Lekki Worldwide Investment Ltd. and the affected villages and communities, parties shall ensure that one director is nominated by the affected villages and communities to represent their interest and appointed to the Board of Director of the Lekki Worldwide Ltd.”

He urged the state government to wade into the matter and yield to the demands of the affected villages and communities, having submitted a petition to the government, as a lasting solution to the lingering issues.

Reacting, Mr Olugbemiga Aina, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trades and Investment, in charge of the zone, told NAN that there were so many internal rancor between the representatives of the affected villages and communities.

Aina said while the state government had fulfilled its part of the agreement by allocating the resettlement lands to the affected communities; lack of trust and dishonesty among the communities’ leaders have not allowed peace and equity prevail.

The permanent secretary said that the state government and leadership of the House of Assembly have been doing their best to mediate between the affected parties and their representatives.

He expressed shock that the resettlement committee was selling the apportioned lands, noting that the committee was expected to distribute the land evenly among the affected parties in a fair and transparent manner.

Aina explained that the new director on the Board of Lekki Worldwide Ltd., was nominated by the Lekki Coastal Development Association for the appointment after the demise of the erstwhile director, which was in line with the MoU between parties of the zone.

He stated that state government would continue to mediate between the aggrieved parties to ensure that all the issues are brought to logical conclusions.

Aina also advised the affected parties to resolve all the differences among them and allow peace to reign. (NAN)

Ibrahim Oyewale in Lokoja

Ahead of the impending floods in Kogi State, the state government has urged those living in the flood plains to move to higher ground for safety to avoid disasters such as loss of lives and property.

This followed the persistent warnings by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) that Kogi and other states may experience flooding as a result of more rainfall and the likelihood of releasing water from dams within and outside the country.

The government called on the chairmen of the 9 prone local government areas , Kogi , Lokoja , Ajaokuta,, Ofu, Idah Ibaji, Igalamela, Bassa and Omala to be proactive ahead of the impending flooding.

As part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the floods in the state, the state government disclosed that it has established 42 IDP camps across eight local government areas with nine flood-prone areas.

The stakeholders have also taken proactive measures to convene emergency meetings to prevent flood disasters in the state.

Following the rising water levels of the Rivers Niger and Benue, as well as the 2024 flood prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders to discuss strategies for emergency management and response to the impending flood disasters.

The meeting, which was convened by the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Joseph Oluwasegun, called for a unified response to the impending flood threats, highlighting the need for seamless collaboration among stakeholders.

He emphasised the need to intensify public sensitisation efforts ensuring that prone communities are adequately informed and prepared to respond to the disaster.

While presenting the update on the flood preparedness efforts, the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, Mouktar Atimah, revealed that 42 IDP camps have been activated  across eight LGAs with nine flood-prone areas identified, and approximately 250,000 people expected to be displaced.

Atimah stressed that an Emergency Operation Centre would be established to facilitate effective coordination and response to the flooding situation.

He, however, noted that water levels are rising, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and prompt action to mitigate the impact of the impending flood.

In line with the determination to prevent and minimise disasters, the stakeholders, in their separate areas of expertise, discussed various aspects of flood management, mitigation strategies, emergency response protocols, and evacuation procedures, with a focus on developing a comprehensive plan to minimize the impact in the event of flooding.

They resolved to work with the data provided by SEMA to inform their decision-making, guide resource allocation, and implement targeted interventions towards the effect of flooding.

The  critical stakeholders present at the meeting are the officials from the State Emergency Management Agency led by the Executive Secretary,  Mouktar Atimah; Commissioner for Agriculture, Timothy Ojomah, and Commissioner for Water Resources. Yahaya Farouk.

Others are the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Rabietu Okute; Dr. Ojotule Austin (S/Epid)  Ministry of Health, GM Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board, Mr Ajayi Olufemi, as well as officials from the state Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management.

Ododo Committed to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Says Fanwo https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/ododo-committed-to-tinubus-renewed-hope-agenda-says-fanwo/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/20/ododo-committed-to-tinubus-renewed-hope-agenda-says-fanwo/#comments Fri, 20 Sep 2024 11:53:00 +0000 https://www.thisdaylive.com/?p=1014042

Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, has said that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State is “unrepentantly committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his efforts to make the nation better”.

Fanwo who said this while fielding questions from newsmen at the Ilorin International Airport, Friday said the relationship between the President and Governor Ododo remains that of a “father and son” and that the Governor is an “inveterate believer in the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President”.

He insisted that Governor Ododo would always rally the people of Kogi State behind the President.

Reacting to the incidents at the EFCC Headquarters and the Kogi State Government Lodge on Wednesday, Mr Fanwo said the Governor’s action was borne out of patriotism on one hand and the need not to overheat the security situation on the other.

“The Governor wants to make it clear that his decision to go with the former Governor Yahaya Bello to the EFCC was borne out of his patriotic zeal to ensure that law enforcement agencies are respected and supported to do their job, especially as the former Governor also expressed his readiness to honour the invitation of the Anti Graft Agency as a leader who has respect for constituted institutions.

“He also said his decision to leave the Kogi State Government Lodge when EFCC officials started shooting sporadically there was to avert a confrontation between them and his own security operatives which could lead to bloodshed.

“Governor Ododo is a perfect gentleman who is committed to peace and security. He sees the Renewed Hope Administration as his own administration and has remained loyal and committed to Mr President. He believes that Mr President is the best for Nigeria at a time like this when tough decisions are needed to salvage our nation and make it truly prosperous”.

On whether the Governor is distracted over Wednesday’s incidents, Fanwo said such assumptions tend to “underrate the focus and commitment of the Governor to issues of development”, assuring the people that the Governor remains committed to the development of his state and Nigeria as a whole.

“Governor Ododo immediately returned to Lokoja in good time to lead the APC Local Government Campaign Flag off yesterday and you could see the tumultuous turnout which is an indication that APC remains the party to beat in Kogi State. He also assured the people of a free and fair Local Government Poll on October 19.

“Immediately after the Local Government Campaign Rally, the Governor moved to Akoko Edo in Edo State to join the APC ‘s efforts at clinching the Governorship poll tomorrow. It will be his second time of rallying the people of Edo State behind the All Progressives Congress as he was also there last week. His loyalty to the party and Mr President is iron-cast.

“Also yesterday, the Governor expressed confidence in the party’s success in tomorrow’s election, saying more states for APC will also mean more cooperation with the center to actualize the gains of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President. Mr President is committed to developing Nigeria and he is working with all the states regardless of party affiliation. But being in the progressive fold makes it easier to understand with and also cooperate for the realization of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“He told the people of Edo State to come out massively to elect the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The Governor has remained in Akoko Edo to mobilize the people behind the party”.

Mr Fanwo also said the Governor would want to appreciate the National Security Adviser for the “general improvement in security around the country”, saying Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has proven his mettle as an “indomitable crime fighter”.

“Governor Ododo has worked extensively with the Office of the NSA to strengthen security in Kogi State and all he has for the NSA is commendation for the professionalism and steel that he has brought to the security sector of the nation. He urged all Nigerians to support the security efforts of the present administration as the nation can only witness development in a peaceful atmosphere,” the Commissioner noted.

Fanwo also said the State had become a construction hub “as many projects have been completed while others are in different stages of completion.”

“Governor Ododo has turned Kogi State into a construction hub. Some of the infrastructural projects have been completed while others are in different stages of completion. The administration is also improving infrastructure at the rural areas as a part of our strategies to boost agricultural production. Rural areas are now witnessing massive projects in road construction, healthcare facilities and beautiful schools. His intention is to make livelihood better in rural areas so as to empower more people to go into agriculture. Kogi is focused on becoming the food basket of Nigeria.

“In his First Year Anniversary, many of those projects will be commissioned. We know our responsibilities to our people and Nigerians due to our location as the gateway to the North and South of this great nation. The Governor will not disappoint,” he assured.

The Information Commissioner also said Governor Ododo is “eternally grateful” to Mr President for his ongoing efforts at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

“Governor Ododo has also expressed his eternal gratitude to Mr President for ongoing efforts at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company. He believes that when fully operational, it will improve the nation’s economy instantly”, he said.

• Directs immediate support for residents as engineers inspect area

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Thursday visited Bode Saadu town to sympathise with its residents following the recent downpours that overflew the Arinun Bridge and initially submerged many houses in the area.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, which started that the governor was accompanied by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. John Bello and Special Adviser (Special Duties), Abdulrazaq Jiddah, added that the governor went round the affected areas in the community to have a firsthand account of the situation.

Residents commended the governor for the visit, which they said again pointed to his commitment to the welfare of the people.

“We are here to commiserate with the people of Bode Saadu and make sure that everybody is okay and look at the causes of the flood,” he told reporters on the sideline of the visit.

“We have realised that with the major work going on with the dualisation of the Ilorin-Mokwa Road by the Federal Ministry of Works, they have built a temporary bypass. Somehow, there are some challenges around the bypass, which experts will look into. That is the cause of the flooding. The Director of Highway, Federal Ministry of Works and other experts are on their way here to find an immediate solution to the problem. We have also deployed the state Emergency Management Agency for some relief measures.”

The governor also appealed to residents of the state to always steer clear of setbacks, adding: “One of the major challenges we have nationwide is people not observing setbacks. It is a major problem. Half of the buildings wouldn’t have been affected if they had observed the right setbacks.

“We will intensify our efforts to ensure that people observe setbacks for the safety of all.”

John Bello, who hailed from the axis of the state, commended the governor for the visit.

By Anietie Usen

The short documentary film lasted for just six minutes, fifty eight seconds. The impact however may outlive generations and possibly secure a place in history.

As the very touching documentary scrolled to an abrupt end, arousing a mixed feeling of sympathy and gratitude, the select audience inside the exotic Banquet Hall of the Government House, Uyo, Nigeria, broke into an emotional applause that lingered longer than usual.

From where he sat, surrounded by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi and other key officials, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, the host, struggled with his emotions, fighting back tears that welled up his eyes. But he failed. At last, he fished out a white kerchief from his trouser pocket, removed his blended bifocal lenses and wiped his eyes. Not one dignitary was left with a dry eye inside that beautiful ornamented hall. It didn’t matter that the Governor’s guests occupying the better part of the hall were not the high and mighty. They were just a group of 39 poverty stricken village school children that the Governor was grooming and bent on sending them to the United Kingdom for a taste of a different life.

The documentary film showed the village kids and their poor parents in their dilapidated thatched houses with mud walls. Their parents and neighbours spoke in utter amazement of the miraculous chain of events that had suddenly turned their children into the cynosure of attention. And the excited children themselves, proud of their feat against all odds, spoke confidently about their journeys to the top 39 out of about 290 children that vied for the same opportunity.

Clearly, what these children lacked in comfort in their scruffy and rundown rural setting were well compensated for by their high IQs, native intelligence and academic excellence, in their rural secondary schools. They were all SS2 students, top of their classes as documented in their schools’ broadsheets and drawn from the 31 LGAs of the State. They spoke in fluent and nearly flawless English, some of course with the accent and influence of their mother tongues. But without a scintilla of doubt, all of them could square off comfortably against their contemporaries in choice secondary schools anywhere in Nigeria.

They were supposed to be 31, one each from the 31 Councils of the State. But the extra eight scored the same marks with the top 31 and the Governor granted them a waiver to join the programme. They had fought a good fight from nine students drawn from three rural schools in 31 LGAs. Their fame had already spread beyond their schools to various surroundings communities. Even their parents and siblings were not left out of the celebrity status.

Most of them in the documentary said they had however never left their remote and squalid communities to the city. But seated here in the festooned Banquet Hall of the Governor’s Lodge, their eyes were darting everywhere in bewilderment of the glitz and glitter of the Governor’s residence.

They had come a long way, literally speaking, to rub shoulders, as it were today, with Governor Eno this morning. A rigorous screening and merit-based selection process that took six months had seen the 39 scaling many incredible hurdles. The Governor, through the Commissioner of Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong and the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, had already sent the children to the British High Commission in Abuja for their visas. It was the first time ever that they saw an aircraft, let alone fly anywhere.

This morning, in the Governor’s Lodge, they were in very high spirit. Their confidence had soared like a falcon on flight. They were immaculately dressed in white T-shirts and white caps to match. The Governor had brought them into his banqueting hall among other things to fete them. When a child washes his hands very clean, as the local adage says, he can eat with the elders. But this occasion was not just about dining and wining. The Governor had also brought some respected clerics, including Prelate Isaiah Isong and Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia to pray for the children and their minders just before they jetted out to the UK.

But before the prayers and buffet came the surprising documentary film detailing the lives of these impoverished children and their struggling parents in their homesteads, put together by the Ini Ememobong-led crew. It was the zenith of this sombre event. The Governor captured the moment graphically in his brief, emotion-laden send-fourth remark.

“I wish the Commissioner of Information did not show us that documentary film. But it’s good that there is a record like this to show the background of these children and to prove that God has a purpose for each and everyone of you children sitting here today”, the governor said, speaking directly to the fortunate children.

“As you grow up, this documentary will help you look back and focus on a greater future that awaits you. If God can select you from the crowd and place you on this novel educational programme on merit, it means He has great plans for you and you can tell the story of how you got here when you grow up”, the governor said.

Vouching for the integrity of the selection process, the governor said there was no favouritism or unfair preferential treatment given to any child that made the list. “I know that there are some people in my position who would have included any name they wanted in the list. But I say this under God that I never recommended any child for this exchange programme. My instruction was simple: go to the rural areas; look for brilliant underprivileged children who would not have otherwise enjoyed this opportunity and enlist them in the programme. That’s all. This is to tell you children that where you come from does not determine what God wants to do with you tomorrow”, the governor said.

To inspire the children to aspire further, the Governor told them the story of how, at a tender age, he had the opportunity to represent Nigeria in an international debate. “Many years ago in my secondary school, God gave me this opportunity way back in Lagos, where I represented this country in an international debate. Many years later, my little daughter, Ebenezer had that privilege to also represent this country in Qatar in an international debate. Many years after, my little niece had that same opportunity. The experience has never left me…So I challenge you to ķnow that you have a limitless opportunity as you begin this adventure in the arms of God.

“You are by no means inferior to anybody who went to any school anywhere in the world. Let it register in your mind that you can make it, you will make it, you should make it…That’s my greatest desire for you… This is your Government House. If you work hard and keep your focus, as you grow in life, this seat (of the governor) could be yours tomorrow. Let this visit to the Government House also tell you that, one day you can even be the President of Nigeria” the Governor said.

It was the kind of pep talk the young minds needed to fire their imagination as the first batch of the 39 touched down in London Gatwick Airport on August 29, 2024. From village to London, overnight, excitement was in the air. Their joy was pure and palpable. A few months back, they never dreamt of venturing beyond their villages. And now these villages boys and girls, aged between 14 and 17, were walking the streets of London, smiling from ear to ear, shepherded by Ini Ememobong, a man they simply know as ‘Uncle’, and Idongesit Etiebet, their ‘London Mummy’, along with a team of minders, medics and counsellors.

From London to Oxford and from Cambridge to Coventry, it was, for the children, like Eddie Murphy’s 1988 movie, Coming To America. “Their program in the UK consisted of what is called tasters sessions and courses which are basically an introduction to university life and learning, using the tools of immersive education”, ‘Uncle’ Ini Ememobong said. It was an opportunity for the children to experience the training usually given to university students in advanced countries, prior to payment of fees. It is primarily for potential university students to have some insight into particular courses they hope to study before they assume studies in earnest.

At Imperial College London, a world-leading university for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business (STEMB), the children who are science and engineering oriented spent sessions, working in the laboratories, while those interested in arts and other courses underwent their taster sessions at Coventry University, recognised globally for its expertise in peacebuilding and business related degree courses.

At Oxford University, they told the Ibom 39 that there are colleges where they must become a PhD holder in seven straight years from the day of their admission. They do not have to work or do any other thing, except study and research. In that college, school fees are not only paid for the students by various sponsors, students are paid allowances and made absolutely comfortable to focus on their studies, for the benefit of humanity.

Said Ememobong: “They heard that there are children in this part of the world who virtually live in laboratories, while research and development grants are made available for them… To this end, His Excellency the Governor sees the exchange programme as one of the incentivization programmes in our education sector to complement and supplement other ongoing educational investments. You know he has already put in place a bursary programme for students in tertiary institutions, WAEC fees are being paid for all final year students in secondary schools and there are special grants for students living with disabilities. But this Edutrip to the UK is his own way of incentivizing scholarships for young brilliant rural children to study hard and secure a better future. It was a mix of immersive learning and experiential teaching for them here in the UK”.

In terms of experiential learning, the Commissioner of Education, Idongesit Etiebet said the exchange programme was “profound and awesome in this aspect”. They visited the science museums, the museum of natural history, the greenwich royal observatory, the maritime museum and national gallery of arts. They went to Cambridge and they saw where DNA was discovered. They saw things and places they knew about only in their textbooks, leading to the demystification of many issues that were abstracts to them before now. Said Mrs Etiebet: “For purely rural children who had never lived in the city, the travelling alone by road, air, sea and railway had an enormous impact on their lives and opened up their minds not just to the opportunities that abound and await them in the near future, but to the challenges they left behind at home… So whether they were in the underground train, or the surface train, or in electric buses, they were like, what is the problem back home? Why are these things not in Nigeria? I think they can never be the same again”.

The children themselves confirmed what the Commissioner of Education said. “I really enjoyed this programme. It is a real eye-opener for me. I am so fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries. I visited and now know a lot of places. We were at many universities and we learnt a lot. I wish I could have another opportunity to come back to London for studies in one of the higher institutions we visited. I owe a lot of gratitude to our competent governor, who made this wonderful experience possible for me. Kudos to the two commissioners and other officials who took very good care of us in London”, Abigail Nyaknno Friday, from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA said in flawless English and diction.

“I have now been exposed to another side of life which is so different from what I had experienced all my life. This experience will help me academically from this time onwards. I was amazed and very impressed by what I saw at Imperial College London especially as it relates to my passion for electrical engineering. I promised myself that when I return to Akwa Ibom, I will study harder so that I can find my way back to Imperial College London as a student in Electrical Engineering”, Elijah Dominic Anso of Community Secondary School, Mbokpo Eyo Akan in Urue Offiong/Oruko LGA, said.

Esther MbetAbasi Okon, who found her ferry trip on River Thames very memorable, also wants to return to Imperial College in the nearest future; while Godswill Samson Asuquo, who is no longer content with life as a village boy, is targeting Cambridge University. “Like all my colleagues in this special programme, I want to thank God and our dear Governor for making me one of the lucky participants… One of my best experiences was the visit to the time fixer, known as the chronophage, in the Cambridge University. The lesson I learnt there was that time waits for nobody”, he said.

Parents of the Ibom 39 are not left out of the celebration. Emmanuel Friday, father of Abasiama, who hails from Etim Ekpo LGA, summed up the joy of the 38 other parents whose children made the Edutrip to the UK. “I have never boarded an aircraft in my life let alone travel out of Nigeria. But seeing that my child, the child of a poor village farmer like me, has done so at a very young age gladdens my heart, and raises my hope for a brighter future. I pray for life to see him become a great man in future, and I pray for this good man that God made a governor, that the Almighty God take him to greater heights in Nigeria”.

Close watchers of Governor Umo Eno have hailed him, not just for his focus on rural development, one of the five pillars of his ARISE Agenda, but his programmes in agriculture, infrastructure, security/safety and education. His novel idea of exposing rural children to opportunities abroad, which he hopes to sustain, has been compared with the heroic effort of Ibibio founding fathers of the legendary Ibibio Union, who were the first ethnic group in Nigeria to organise a communal overseas scholarship for their sons in 1938.

Spearheaded by the first President General of Ibibio Union, Obong Samson Udo Etuk, an indigene of Etinan, the beneficiaries of that overseas university scholarship, included Late Sir. Justice Udo Udoma, the Chief Justice of Uganda (1963-1969) and father of Senator Udoma; Late Obong Bassey Udo Adiaha Attah, the father of Obong Victor Attah, Governor of Akwa Ibom State (1999 -2007); Obong Ibanga Udo Akpabio, the uncle of Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio; Dr. Obot Essien Antiabong, Hon. James Lawson Nsima, Dr. Asuquo Udo Idiong and Obong Sampson Udo Etuk, a distinguished educationist and development crusader par excellent, who later opted out of the scholarship to sponsor himself in order to preserve his integrity as the First President General of Ibibio Union. These pioneers of communal overseas scholarship who are known and celebrated as “Merchants of Light” left behind a profound impact in the history of what is now Akwa Ibom State.

A new generation of torchbearers have arisen and are shining from the stable of Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda. They are not from the flourishing bloom of the elites, but from the roots of rural poor or what Frantz Fanon, the Afro- Caribbean philosopher, would call ‘the wretched of the earth’.

History is in the making!

*Oborevwori harps on unifying benefit of sports

Omon-Julius Onabu in Asaba

Delta State has won the 8th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), which the state hosted in Asaba, after winning a total of 111 medals comprising of 46 Gold, 31 Silver and 34 Bronze, at the end of the competition.

Lagos State emerged second with a total of 65 medals, Mase up of 26 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze, while Edo State occupied the 3rd position with 18 gold, 13 silver and 28 bronze, totalling 59 medals.

With this victory, Delta has maintained its supremacy in youth sports in the country, being the only state that has won the annual tournament since inception eleven years ago.

Delta State, which also hosted the games in 2023, will host two more editions of the competition.

35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) participated in the games which started on 9th September, 2024 with President Bola Tinubu formally declaring the games open a week ago.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the games, on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reiterated his administration’s commitment to the development of sports and sporting infrastructure in the state in order to promote sports education and create an avenue for youths to thrive.

The governor, who was represented at the occasion by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, noted that the state’s commitment to the development of sports infrastructure was advised by the fact that games underscore the power of sports to unite and promote friendship and as well showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.

Oborevwori said, “As we bring the games to a close, let us continue to nurture our young talents, invest in grassroot sports development and provide opportunity for our youths to excel.

“Here in Delta State, we are committed to developing as well as promoting sports education, and creating a platform for our youths to thrive.

“I charge you all to continue to earnestly crave for excellence as you grow to become ambassadors of our nation and to inspire others with your achievements.

“The games have once again demonstrated the power of sports to unite, to promote friendship and camaraderie, as well as to showcase
our rich cultural diversity.

“As Governor of Delta State, I am particularly honoured to host this prestigious event in our great city of Asaba for the second time. We are eagerly waiting to receive you again for the 9th edition, next year.”

Nonetgeless, Oborevwori commended those who won medals during the games for their competitive spirit, the local organizing committee and the Federal Ministry of Sports for making the games a huge success.

The Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh, who was represented by the Director, Grassroots Sports Development, Mr Patrick Okeke, said that the Youth Games have become a veritable avenue for sport talents discovery, which would greatly enhance sports and athletic development in the country.

The games help to promote peaceful coexistence and unity among states and as well promote economic development for the host state, he pointed out.

*Alleges ulterior motive

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has berated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the handling of the former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello’s issue, and called for the resignation of the commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
In a statement signed on Thursday by its President, Comrade Ifeanyi Odili, CD said: “It is unimaginable that the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, who, the same EFCC had declared wanted, who was placed on watchlist, who the Commission enlisted security agencies in Nigeria and Interpol to help fish out, walked into the EFCC premises on Wednesday, waited for about three hours and no arrest or interrogation happened.”

It said, “Instead, they told him to go, that they would get back to him only to issue a laughable statement that he was still a wanted man. How can someone who brought himself to you still be at large?”
The statement said the agency’s excuse that “they couldn’t arrest him because a sitting governor accompanied him to their office was the main reason Olukoyede should be asked to go.”
CD also recalled that many people had castigated this man for long even though many others believed the case was mainly that of persecution.

It said, “In all of this, CD did not dabble into the matter. Now that the matter has taken a dramatic turn, one that touches on democratic principles and affects the country’s image, it is pertinent for well-meaning Nigerians to lend their voice.
“Associates of the former governor had been raising the alarm that his life is at risk. With the events of yesterday (Wednesday 18th September, 2024), any right thinking person would conclude that his life must be truly at risk.
“You said you couldn’t arrest him or interrogate him in your office because his governor was there, yet you went, at night, to the official residence of the same governor in Abuja to start firing gunshots as if Nigeria is a lawless society. This is unacceptable. In saner climes, the EFCC boss would have been fired the next morning.
CD said ex-Gov Bello had fulfilled all righteousness, adding, “with the turn of events that culminated in a show of shame last night, it appears the EFCC has an ulterior motive definitely different from the fight against corruption.”

According to him, the demand for the immortalisation of Iwuanyanwu had also been made by the Middle Belt Forum.

“You will recall that during the condolence visit by the Middle Belt Forum, they made a demand that the Federal Government should immortalise the late President General of Ohaneze and we are going to make that demand strongly because Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was undisputably one of the foremost statesmen in this country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released revised regulations and guidelines for the recall of a member of the National Assembly, House of Assembly of a state or Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement Thursday appealed to constituents interested in the recall of their elected representatives to be guided by the provisions of the regulations and guidelines in preparing and submitting their petitions to the commission.

The commission released the guidelines after its meeting held Thursday to review the final preparations for the Edo State governorship election holding on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Olumekun added that the commission also considered and approved the revised Regulations and Guidelines for the Recall of members of the National and State Assemblies and Councillors in the Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He noted: “The commission has, in the last few weeks, received a number of requests from different groups across the country for the recall of their representatives in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.

“Some of them have even requested the commission to initiate the process of the recall on their behalf.

“For clarity, the process is initiated by the voters in a constituency. The commission only implements their request in line with Sections 69, 110 and 160 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Sections 2(c) and 113 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Accordingly, the commission has reviewed the regulations and guidelines, providing a detailed procedure for recall.”

The commission added that the 10-page document has been uploaded on its website and social media platforms for the guidance of prospective petitioners and for public information.

The Nigerian Army yesterday said that troops on a sting operation in Kaduna State and acting on credible intelligence, intercepted terrorists attempting to migrate from Alawa Forest in Niger State to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State.

A statement by Nigerian Army said the ambush led to a fierce firefight, resulting in the elimination of two terrorists, while others managed to flee back, adding that troops  also  recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and three motorcycles at the scene.

“In a separate operation, troops also acted on intelligence about the movement of terrorists at Hayin Nakwakina village in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Troops sprung an ambush against the terrorists, neutralising two of them and subsequently restoring normalcy in the village that had been earlier displaced by the terrorists. Troops also recovered two motorcycles, a mobile phone, and machetes abandoned by the fleeing terrorists,” the statement said.

The statement also disclosed that while responding to a distress call, the gallant troops extricated 20 kidnap hostages who were abducted by marauding terrorists along Kwaga-Polewire wire axis of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The troops, NA said, successfully rescued the abductees after a shootout that overwhelmed the terrorists, compelling them to succumb and run for their lives, adding that the rescued hostages have since been reunited with their families.

According to the statement, “The Nigerian Army appreciates the continued support and cooperation of the public in providing credible information to the troops. We remain committed to decisively curbing all acts of terrorism, insurgency, and economic sabotage in the country”.

The Nigerian Army said that ongoing offensive against terrorists nationwide continues to yield significant results, with troops successfully ambushing and neutralizing more terrorists, concluding that weapons and logistics belonging to the terrorists were also recovered from their enclaves.
